Aimed at boosting ties between India and the United States on space exploration, India is geared up to launch an earth observation satellite jointly developed by ISRO and NASA on Wednesday.
Eyeing to study the planet Earth as a whole from a Sun-synchronous Orbit, the NISAR satellite is a combination of human skills and exchange of software and hardware between the two space agencies for over a decade.
NISAR, an acronym for NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar satellite, weighing 2,393 kg is expected to fly on a 51.7 metre tall, three stage, GSLV-F16 rocket at a prefixed time of 5.40 pm from the second launch pad at this spaceport situated about 135 km from Chennai on Wednesday.The countdown for the launch commenced at 2.10 pm on July 29 and has been progressing, ISRO said, and the mission would be classified into launch phase, deployment phase, commissioning phase and science phase."GSLV-F16/NISAR Today's the day! Launch Day has arrived for GSLV-F16 and NISAR. GSLV-F16 is standing tall on the launch pad. NISAR is ready. Liftoff today," ISRO said in a social media post on Wednesday.
While the partnership between ISRO and NASA is first of its kind, it is also the first time for a GSLV rocket to carry a rocket destined to Sun-synchronous Polar Orbit (SSPO) unlike Polar Satellite Launch Vehicles.The Bengaluru-headquartered ISRO has sent similar missions in the past (Resourcesat, RISAT) to study the Earth but were "operationally focused" on Indian territory. The NISAR mission is targeted to study the Earth and would provide information to global scientific fraternity, ISRO said.The satellite would be able to study seasonal changes on forest dynamics, mountain shifts, glacier movements in the Himalayas and Antarctica, North and South poles.NISAR mission's primary objectives are to study land and ice deformation, land ecosystems, and oceanic regions in areas of common interest to the United States and Indian science communities.ISRO said the complex payloads and mainframe systems in the mission have been designed, developed, and realised over a period of 8 to 10 years.Scientists from both space agencies were involved in extensive collaborations and the NISAR satellite carries dual frequency -- two L Band provided by NASA and S-Band provided by ISRO for the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) enabling the collection of a vast amount of data.The S-Band SAR and L-Band SAR were independently developed, integrated and tested at ISRO and Jet Propulsion Laboratory, NASA, United States, respectively, ISRO said.After reaching the initial orbital conditions on Wednesday, scientists would engage in 'commissioning' the satellite.The first 90 days after launch would be dedicated to commissioning or to perform In-Orbit Checkout, the objective of which is to prepare the observatory for science operations, ISRO said.The dual-band Synthetic Aperture Radar employs an advanced, SweepSAR technique, which provides high resolution and large swath imagery. NISAR would image the global land and ice-covered surfaces, including islands, sea-ice and oceans, every 12 days.The spacecraft and the launch system are developed by ISRO while the L-band Radar system, high speed downlink system, GPS receiver are delivered by NASA. ISRO is responsible for the satellite and commanding operations, while NASA would provide the orbit manoeuver and RADAR operations plan.NISAR mission would be aided with ground station support of both the two space agencies for downloading the acquired images, which, after the necessary processing, would be disseminated to the user community.GSLV-F16 is the 18th flight of Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle and the 12th with indigenous cryogenic stage. It is also the 102nd launch from Sriharikota.
The life of the NISAR Mission is 5 years, ISRO said.

The project focuses on precision-driven predictive breeding in guava, a fruit often referred to as the "apple of the tropics" due to its high nutraceutical value. The initiative, titled "Pangenomics and SNP array development for mapping genetic factors controlling nutraceutical and processing traits in guava (Psidium guajava L.)", aims at enhancing guava breeding through advanced genomic tools. Spanning five years, the project is designed to improve fruit quality, shelf life, and processing traits in guava varieties cultivated across India. PAU boasts a rich germplasm collection of guava, featuring valuable traits such as colored skin and flesh, low seed count, soft seeds, and extended shelf life. These traits are central to the university's breeding priorities, which seek to increase the commercial appeal and nutritional value of the fruit. It will focus on improving the guava genome of the popular Allahabad Safeda variety, generating a pangenome of Indian-origin guavas, and developing a SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) array to facilitate predictive breeding. This will enable selection of progeny with desirable traits such as increased sweetness, reduced seed core, soft seeds, and anthocyanin-rich flesh—traits that are in high demand among consumers and processors. The team emphasised that marker assisted selection (MAS) will play a key role in reducing the time, cost, and space required to develop new guava varieties. MAS allows breeders to identify and select plants with specific genetic traits early in the breeding process, making it a powerful tool for accelerating crop improvement. PAU vice-chancellor Dr Satbir Singh Gosal congratulated the team for securing the project and praised their commitment to solving key challenges in fruit crop production. Dr Ajmer Singh Dhatt, director, research, and Dr Rishi Pal Singh, registrar, also lauded the team's efforts in advancing biotechnology-based solutions for farmers. Dr Yogesh Vikal, director, School of Agricultural Biotechnology, and Dr H S Rattanpal, head of fruit science, commended the scientists for their outstanding achievement, calling it a milestone in PAU's research journey. This project is expected to significantly contribute to the development of elite guava cultivars with improved nutritional and commercial traits, benefiting both farmers and consumers across India.

1 2 Nagpur: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday said that Sanskrit is the key to all forms of ancient Vedic knowledge, and it not only needs to be preserved but also re-cultivated. He was speaking at the inauguration of the Dr Keshav Baliram Hedgewar administrative building and the bhoomipujan of new hostel complexes of the Kavikulguru Kalidas Sanskrit University's new campus in Waranga near Wardha Road. Calling Sanskrit a "complete language," Fadnavis highlighted its role in shaping India's scientific, spiritual, and philosophical heritage. "Sanskrit is the master key to all knowledge. Ayurveda , mathematics, astronomy, metallurgy — every innovation of ancient India was rooted in this language. Sanskrit language holds over 10,200 crore words in its vocabulary," he said. Fadnavis recalled visiting Koyasan in Japan, where he saw Buddhist monks performing Indian rituals and reciting prayers in Sanskrit. "Their pronunciation had a Japanese accent, but the language was Sanskrit. It showed the global influence and timeless relevance of our traditions," he said, adding that he personally regrets never having learnt Sanskrit properly, even though his mother holds an MA in the subject. "While I couldn't do it, it would give me great pleasure to contribute even a little in ensuring that our future generations learn this language," he said. Referring to the university's journey, Fadnavis recalled that it was late MP Dr Shrikant Jichkar, one of the most highly qualified individuals in the country, who first conceived the idea of a Sanskrit university in Kalidas's name. "It took shape gradually. Ideally, it should have been in Ramtek (as it is the birthplace of the great poet), but to give it international reach, it was necessary to house it in Nagpur," Fadnavis said. The CM also announced that the university's infrastructure will be developed at par with international standards, similar to the Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU) campus, which shares a common wall with the KKSU. "A master plan will be prepared soon. Funds will be sanctioned, and the university will be developed within a fixed timeframe," he said. He also announced plans to expand KKSU with sub-centres in Pune, Parbhani, Chattrapati Sambhajinagar, and Jalgaon, furthering Sanskrit education across Maharashtra, whereas in Ratnagiri, the centre has already commenced. Earlier in the day, KKSU vice-chancellor Hareram Tripathi announced that a Rs120 crore proposal has been sent to the state govt under the Rashtriya Uchhatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) scheme for the university's infrastructure development. The plan includes setting up Ayurvedic gurukuls, clinics, a Sanskrit school from Classes 1 to 12, multiple academic buildings, an indoor sports complex under Khelo India, auditoriums, and a temple. "The hostel buildings will accommodate 200 students in each building," he said. The administrative building has been named after RSS founder Dr Keshav Baliram Hedgewar as a tribute to his contribution to reviving Indian traditions and values. "As RSS completes 100 years, it is only fitting to honour Hedgewarji in this way. He stood for the rejuvenation of India's spiritual and cultural roots," the CM said.
