
Expert Explains: Why induction of 26 new Rafale M aircraft matters for the Indian Navy
India and France on Monday signed a $7.4 billion (approximately Rs 63,000 crore) government-to-government contract for 26 Rafale Marine (Rafale M) fighter aircraft for the Indian Navy. Thirty-six Rafale aircraft were earlier inducted into the Indian Air Force from 2021 onward.
Why is the induction of the Rafale M important in the context of the Indian Navy?
First, what is meant by naval aviation?
Naval aviation is the use of military air power by navies, involving aircraft that operate from warships — such as aircraft carriers and other aircraft — or helicopter-carrying surface combatants, or land bases to support naval operations.
It includes specialised naval aircraft designed to meet the unique demands of carrier operations and small decks, such as short takeoffs and arrested landings, and roles such as air-to-air combat, surface and submarine attack, maritime reconnaissance, search and rescue, and logistical support.
The key roles of naval aviation include:
FLEET AIR DEFENCE: providing air cover for naval forces beyond the reach of land-based aircraft;
STRATEGIC POWER PROJECTION: allowing deployment of air power without needing land bases;
ANTI-SURFACE WARFARE: attacking enemy ships with air-launched missiles;
SUPPORTING AMPHIBIOUS WARFARE: aiding marine landings and operations inland; and
MINE COUNTERMEASURES: using aircraft to detect and clear enemy mines.
Naval aviation is crucial for maintaining control of the seas, supporting naval and ground forces, and projecting military power along distant shores. It includes fixed-wing carrier borne squadrons, land-based Maritime Patrol Aircraft, Helicopters and Remotely Piloted Aircraft operated from warships and ashore.
And what exactly is an aircraft carrier?
An aircraft carrier is a warship that serves as a seagoing airbase, equipped with a full-length flight deck and hangar facilities for supporting, arming, deploying, and recovering shipborne aircraft.
It allows a naval force to project seaborne air power far from its homeland without having to rely on airfields ashore. Aircraft carriers as part of the Carrier Battle Groups are often the centerpiece of modern naval warfare, with significant strategic and diplomatic influence in deterrence, command of the sea, and air supremacy.
Aircraft carriers are also adaptable and survivable airfields that are ready to control the seas, conduct strikes, and manoeuvre across the electromagnetic spectrum and cyberspace.
About 50 carriers, operated by the navies of several countries, are currently active around the world. The United States Navy leads with 11 large nuclear powered carriers followed by Brazil, China, France, India, Italy, Russia, Spain, Thailand and the United Kingdom.
What is the history of carrier aviation in India?
While Indian naval aviation will celebrate its 72nd anniversary on May 11, 2025, India's carrier aviation began with the commissioning of the INS Vikrant in 1961.
Since the 1960s, India has operated four carriers — the INS Vikrant (1961-1997), INS Viraat (1987-2017), INS Vikramaditya (since 2013), and the indigenously built INS Vikrant, which was commissioned in 2022.
Through this unbroken period of 64 years, India has operated all major types of aircraft launch and recovery systems and continues to expand its carrier fleet, with future plans for additional indigenous construction.
But why does India need aircraft carriers?
India requires aircraft carriers for several strategic, military, and geopolitical reasons.
STRATEGIC DETERRENCE AND POWER PROJECTION: Aircraft carriers enable India to assert influence and maintain favourable balance of power in the Indian Ocean, a region critical for trade, energy flow and security for India and the world.
PROTECTION OF MARITIME INTERESTS: More than 90% of India's trade by volume moves by sea. Carriers help secure Sea Lines of Communication (SLOCs), protect island territories, and deter potential threats.
BLUE WATER NAVY CAPABILITY: Carriers allow the Indian Navy to operate far from home shores, reinforcing its status as a blue water force capable of extended operations and rapid responses to crises.
CONTINUOUS OPERATIONAL READINESS: Having multiple carriers ensures that at least one is always operational on each coast, even as others are in maintenance or refit.
NON-MILITARY ROLES: Carriers also play a vital role in Humanitarian & Disaster Relief (HADR) operations that project India's soft power and the ability to respond to regional emergencies and calamities, which are not uncommon in the Indian Ocean Region.
How will the Rafale Ms help the Navy?
Over the years, India has operated a wide variety of carrier-based fighters — from Sea Hawks, Alizes, Sea Harriers and, at present, the very capable fourth generation MiG29Ks.
The country is now developing the fifth generation Twin Engine Deck Based Fighter (TEDBF), that is likely to be operationalised in the middle of the next decade.
The 26 Rafale M jets, a four-and-a-half-generation battle-proven combat aircraft, will augment the existing MiG29K fleet.
A great advantage that accrues with the induction of the 26 Rafale Ms for the Indian Navy is the commonality with the IAF Rafales. This provides the desirable scope for interoperability and joint training, as well as for maintenance and safe practices of these assets and their aircrew between the two services.
The induction of this very capable aircraft in the coming years is a shot in the arm for the Indian armed forces, and shall ensure continued and enhanced combat capabilities across the full spectrum of India's military might.

Painting believed to be only one Mahatma Gandhi sat for going under hammer at Bonhams
TOI correspondent from London : An oil portrait believed to be the only painting Mahatma Gandhi ever sat for is going under the hammer at Bonhams in July with an estimate of £50,000-£70,000 (Rs 58 lakh to Rs 81 lakh. ) It is the first time this portrait has ever been sold at auction as it remained in British artist Clare Leighton's collection until her death in 1989, after which it was passed down through her family. Leighton, reputed for her wooden engravings, was introduced to Gandhi when he visited London in 1931 to attend the Second Round Table Conference. At the time, she was in a relationship with political journalist Henry Noel Brailsford, who was a passionate supporter of Indian Independence. He had travelled to India in 1930 where he met key Independence figures. Afterwards he published the book 'Rebel India', met Gandhi in London in 1931 and introduced Leighton to him. She became one of very few artists admitted to his office and was given the opportunity to sit with him to sketch and paint him in 1931. In Nov 1931 Leighton showcased her portraits at the Albany Galleries in London. The following month, Gandhi's personal secretary, Mahadev Desai, wrote a letter to Leighton, a copy of which is attached to the backing board, which reads: 'It was such a pleasure to have had you here for many mornings doing Mr Gandhi's portrait.' According to the artist's family, the portrait was on public display in 1974 when it was allegedly attacked with a knife by a Hindu right-wing activist. The catalogue entry states: 'We have found no documentation to corroborate this, but the painting shows signs of restoration to what appears to be repaired tears in several places. A label attached to the backing board confirms the painting was restored in 1974 by the Lyman Allyn Museum Conservation Laboratory. ' 'There is nothing comparable to this painting in existence as it was painted in his lifetime and was a painting that he sat for on multiple occasions,' Rhyanon Demery, head of sale, told TOI. The auction takes place from 7 to 15 July.

Encroachments removed from Sindhi Camp bus stand
Jaipur: Anti-encroachment committee of JMC-Heritage Wednesday conducted a drive to remove encroachments from Sindhi Camp bus stand, the busiest bus terminal in the city. More than two dozen illegal carts were confiscated, and encroachments made on the road outside shops were removed, officials said. Manoj Mudgal, chairperson of the anti-encroachment committee, said, "Many people had encroached upon the bus stand, due to which operation of buses was disturbed and passengers and drivers were facing problems. We first tried to explain to local traders to remove the encroachments, but, despite our efforts, the encroachments were not cleared. Action was finally taken by the civic body today." Mudgal added that main roads and intersections in the Walled City will also be made encroachment-free. "This will not only make the traffic system in Jaipur smooth, but domestic and foreign tourists visiting will be able to see the beauty of the Pink City in a better way," he said. Meanwhile, JMC-Greater removed temporary encroachments from Pankaj Singhvi Marg, Fortis Hospital, JLN Marg, near Jawahar Circle Police Station, Nandpuri Underpass, Sanganer Bazaar, City Bus Stand, Malpura Gate, and surrounding areas on Wednesday. Two canters of goods were seized and sent to the warehouse, and a carrying charge of Rs 10,000 was collected on the spot from the encroachers, officials said.

India Eyes Deadliest Missile Yet: Meet R-37M That Can Obliterate Pakistan's AWACS, F-16s Before They Even Fire
New Delhi: In the escalating arms race post-Operation Sindoor, India may be acquiring a game-changing weapon that could rewrite South Asia's air warfare equation. It is Russian R-37M missile, a long-range air-to-air beast so fast and deadly that even the United States and China are known to shudder at its capabilities. Russia is said to have offered India to supply the R-37M and license its production on Indian soil. If the deal goes through, the Indian Air Force (IAF) will gain a powerful edge over adversaries such as China and Pakistan in high-stakes aerial confrontations. The R-37M is considered to be a nightmare for Pakistan's F-16s and AWACS. It is not only a missile but also a jet killer. Built to destroy enemy aircraft from beyond visual range (BVR), it can take down Pakistan's prized F-16s and AWACS surveillance aircraft before they even detect an Indian fighter jet. With speeds of up to Mach 6, six times the speed of sound, the R-37M can strike targets more than 300 kilometers away. Its mid-flight target switch capability and active radar guidance system make it almost impossible to dodge, even for highly maneuverable jets. 'It's not a missile but an airborne predator. It allows India to destroy enemy aircraft without ever entering their strike zone. That flips the entire doctrine of air combat,' said a senior defense analyst. At present, the IAF deploys R-77 missiles on its Su-30MKI jets. But the R-37M could replace the R-77 entirely, offering a dramatic leap in range, speed and precision. Designed originally to target U.S. AWACS and refueling aircraft, the R-37M's induction into India's arsenal would render Pakistan's air surveillance systems deeply vulnerable. Russia is reportedly willing to share production technology, allowing India to manufacture the missile domestically – a huge win for India's 'Make in India' defense ambitions. Built for the kill, let's know the R-37M by the numbers: speed – Up to Mach 6 (7,400 km/h); range – estimated 300-400 km; weight – 510 kg, length – over four metres; warhead – 60 kg high-explosive; designation – NATO calls it the AA-13 Axehead; and targets – fighter jets, AWACS, drones and tanker aircraft. Unlike older systems, the R-37M does not need visual confirmation. It can lock onto targets far outside the enemy's radar or weapon range, hitting them from the safety of stand-off distances. For Indian pilots, this means striking first from far and never being seen. R-37M Can Strike Across LoC The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) is heavily reliant on U.S.-made F-16s, which are considered its crown jewel. But defense experts warn that with the R-37M in play, India could shoot them down from across the Line of Control (LoC) before they even know what hit them. 'The R-37M neutralises Pakistan's aerial advantage. If deployed, this missile makes any cross-border intrusion suicidal for enemy jets,' said a retired Air Marshal. As India's defense modernisation accelerates in the wake geopolitical tensions simmer, the R-37M could soon be a centerpiece of the country's air dominance strategy – one that might keep adversaries awake at night.
