In Pics: Rajnath Singh Aboard INS Vikrant, Meets Navy Personnel
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Friday boarded the Indian Navy's indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, where he addressed the officers and crew, praising their dedication and strength. During the interaction with naval personnel on board the INS Vikrant off Goa, he sent a stern warning to Pakistan saying India will not hesitate to use the methods to deal with terrorism that Pakistan cannot even think of. Rajnath Singh reviewed operational readiness and praised the Navy's role in neutralising threats during the Operation Sindoor. He also underlined the Navy's vigilance and dominance in the Indo-Pacific region. INS Vikrant, which joined the Indian Navy in 2022, is a major representation of India's goal of building a self-reliant defence sector. The ship's deployment is seen as a crucial step toward reinforcing India's naval capabilities in the Indo-Pacific region. The Made-in-India aircraft carrier is slated to get a boost to its lethality with the inclusion of Rafale Marine (M) fighter jets. The fighter jets will complement the current fleet of MiG 29K. Rajnath Singh's visit comes at a time when India continues to assert its role as a key maritime power amid growing strategic interests in the Indian Ocean.

Defence shares resume up move; BDL, BEL, HAL rally up to 7% in weak market
Share price of defence companies today: Shares of defence companies have resumed their up move on the bourses in an otherwise weak market on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) on Tuesday. They rose on expectations of a strong growth outlook on the back of strong government backing. Bharat Dynamic (BDL), Zen Technologies, Bharat Electronics (BEL), Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), BEML, Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL), Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDL), Paras Defence, Mishra Dhatu Nigam (MIDHANI) and Cochin Shipyard have rallied between 3 per cent and 7 per cent. At 11:37 am, Nifty India Defence index, the top gainer among sectoral indices, was up 3.4 per cent, as compared to the 0.66 per cent decline in Nifty 50. Nifty India Defence index surges The Nifty India Defence index has outperformed the market from its previous month low, with the index surging 24 per cent from its level on April 7, 2025, amid escalating border tension between India and Pakistan. In comparison, the Nifty 50 index has recovered 12 per cent during the same period. Meanwhile, in the past two months, the Nifty India Defence index has surged 30.5 per cent, as against 10.6 per cent rise in the benchmark index. In addition to the India-Pakistan conflict last month, India has approved a major government-to-government agreement with France to procure 26 Rafale Marine fighter jets valued at ₹63,000 crore. The agreement includes 22 single-seater Rafale-M jets and four twin-seater trainers, with deliveries expected to be completed by 2031, according to reports. Defence sector outlook India was the fourth largest military spender in the world in 2023, after the USA, Russia and China. The Government of India (GoI), in the Union Budget for FY2026, continued the increasing trend in allocation to capital outlay with a year-on-year (YoY) rise of 12.8 per cent in FY2026 Budget Estimates (BE) to ₹1.92 trillion, resulting in a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.6 per cent during FY2019-FY2026(BE). This, coupled with the Government's aim to reduce import dependence, would open up various opportunities and benefit domestic companies, according to ratings agency ICRA. Buoyed by the increased budgetary allocation, coupled with the Government's aim to reduce dependence on imports and its production target of ₹1.75 trillion by FY2025, ICRA estimates opportunities worth ₹3.00 trillion for the Indian domestic entities over FY2025 and FY2026, 22 per cent- 23 per cent of which are expected to be accounted for by private sector entities. India's defense exports have increased significantly in recent years, reaching a record ₹21,000 crore in FY24 (Source: Defense Ministry). This is a 33 per cent increase from the previous fiscal year. India has set a defense exports target of ₹30,000 crore by FY26. In this context, the new $850 billion plan by the European Union (EU) provides a major opportunity for domestic public and private defence companies, especially for exports of subsystems and components to EU original equipment manufacturers (OEM), said analysts at Elara Capital in the sector report. Meanwhile, according to the drone federation of India, the country's drone market revenue will expand from nearly $500 million in FY24 to $11 billion by FY30. With Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) drones already deployed in conflict zones, leaders stress the need for rapid scaling and reduced reliance on costly foreign systems. BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile developed jointly by India and Russia. This plant marks a major leap in India's pursuit of self-reliance in defence manufacturing. It not only boosts indigenous production but also positions India to meet export demands, potentially making it a global supplier of advanced missile systems.

Datanomics: India's ₹6.8 trn defence push highlights edge over Pak forces
India struck deep into Pakistan on Wednesday night, blowing up at least nine terror camps — including headquarters of Jaish-e-Mohammed — in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that left 26 tourists dead. The strike marks a sharp escalation in India-Pakistan tensions, with Islamabad warning of a 'forceful response'. Just a few days before, India had signed a ₹63,000 crore deal with France to acquire 26 Rafale Marine jets, jacking up its naval airpower. The deal comes as part of a broader modernisation push, reflected in India's 2025-26 Union Budget, which allocated ₹6.8 trillion to defence, including

'Pakistan ko kehna bhaijan': Ajay Rai's ‘nimbu-mirchi on Rafale' remark fumes BJP, others on social media
Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) President Ajay Rai's remark over the Pahalgam terror attack taking a "nimbu mirchi" jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government over response to Pahalgam terror attack - has faced criticism on social media, mostly from BJP supporters. During a press conference, Rai, who unsuccessfully contested against Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Varanasi in the past, slammed the government for not acting after the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people, including tourists on 22 April. Rai accused Centre of "big talk and no action" against the perpetrators of the terror attack, worst against civilians since 2000. In the video, Rai displayed a white toy plane (Rafale) with lemon-chillies hanging on it. "Terrorist activities have increased in the country, and people are suffering from it. Our youth lost their lives in the Pahalgam terror attack... But, this government, which talks a lot, says that they will crush terrorists – they brought Rafale, but they are in their hangars having chilly and lemon hanging in them. When will they take action against terrorists, those who support them, and their backers?" ANI news agency quoted Rai. Rai's statement was also amplified by Pakistani news sites, triggering a rebuttal from the saffron camp. "The Congress Party and its leaders are being disloyal to India and our people, and the Congress leaders are deliberately trying to defame and demoralise our brave armed forces. The deplorable statements by Ajay Rai, UP Congress chief, from where Rahul Gandhi is MP, are most condemnable. Congress leaders are reprehensible, repeat offenders who are repeatedly dishonourably trying to lower the morale and resolve of our armed forces. But the Congress party's sinister ploy will not be successful," BJP leader CR Kesavan said. BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said, "Why is a continuous attack being made on the morale of armed forces?… Congress party is not taking action because Pakistan ko kehna bhaijaan, sena ka karna apman, ye Congress ki bann chuki hai pehchan, Pakistan aur Congress do shareer aur bole ek hi zubaan." The remark also drew ire from people who took to social media to express their outrage. A user wrote: "Who will make fun of Indian army and its weapons? Pakistan. But he is senior Congress leader from Kashi doing the same." Another user added: "Did you mock after 26/11?" A third user said: "Did you say Senior... sir, there is no seniority." Another said: "Shame on you." The senior Congress leader's remarks come in the backdrop of India's recent defence deal—a ₹ 63,000 crore agreement with France for 26 Rafale Marine fighter jets. Signed earlier this week, the deal aims to bolster India's naval strike capabilities. Rafale deal had become a pollical issue after opposition led by Rahul Gandhi alleged of irregularities in the deal with the French firm related to the purchase of 36 Rafale multirole fighter aircrafts. On 14 December 2018 the Supreme Court of India upheld the Rafale deal, stating that no irregularities or corruption have been found. First Published: 5 May 2025, 11:20 AM IST

Toy Rafale Jet With Lemon And Chilly: UP Congress Chief's Unique Criticism Of Centre
Last Updated: Ajay Rai's criticism of the Centre was sparked by the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 25 people and a local pony ride operator. Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai on Sunday uniquely criticised the centre, holding up a 'toy plane', labelled as 'Rafale' with lemon and chillies dangling from it. He mocked the BJP-led central government, claiming that although Rafale jets were brought from abroad, they remain parked in hangars with chillies and lemons hanging from them. Rai's criticism of the Centre was sparked by the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 25 people and a local pony ride operator. He accused the government of failing to deploy its defence resources effectively against terrorism and those behind such conspiracies. 'Terrorist activities have increased in the country, and people are suffering from it. Our youth lost their lives in the Pahalgam terror attack. But, this government, which talks a lot, says that they will crush terrorists — they brought Rafale, but they are in their hangars having chilly and lemon hanging in them. When will they take action against terrorists, those who support them, and their backers?" Rai told news agency ANI. The Congress leader's remarks come in the backdrop of India's recent defence deal—a Rs 63,000 crore agreement with France for 26 Rafale Marine fighter jets. Signed earlier this week, the deal aims to bolster India's naval strike capabilities. Pahalgam Terror Attack Terrorists sprayed bullets on dozens of tourists in Pahalgam on April 22, killing at least 26, in the deadliest attack in the Valley since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. The Resistance Front (TRF), a shadow group of the Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), claimed responsibility for the terror attack. The attack prompted India to downgrade its diplomatic ties with Pakistan on all fronts. New Delhi suspended the Indus Waters Treaty and recently banned all imports from Islamabad. First Published:
