James Wade opens up on health battles after ending three year darts title drought
Proud James Wade blew his rivals away with a milestone return to the PDC winners circle.
The Machine made all the right noises to win his first darts ranking title since 2022 at the 19th Players Championship event of the campaign.
Wade had been all over social media in build-up to Thursday's tournament after an incident of breaking wind earlier in the week during a match against Peter Wrigh t was caught on TV camera.
But the headlines around the 42-year-old are all about the arrows after his brilliant win which was sealed by a 8-3 success over Scott Williams in the Final.
Wade has battled against health struggles during his victory drought and revealed how it has impacted his career.
He said: "Everyone forgets I had pancreatitis. It's a serious health condition and I went from World No.3 to plummeting down and out of the rankings.
"I just think everyone takes it for granted their health. The public and probably the organisation didn't realise I was really ill.
'I went from world number three to 27. It wasn't because my darting ability disappeared it was because my health disappeared. So give me a little bit of a break!
"Today I felt really proud of myself because I've never been a press favourite or an organisation favourite, but you now, when I've gone against what I've gone against, not knowing if I I'm going to play darts again, today is a milestone.
'I've put myself under quite a bit of pressure over the last 12 months so today it has been really nice. I'm really pleased and happy. It's been a bloody long time, that is for sure.'
The 42-year-old smashed in two ton-plus checkouts to overcome Gian van Veen 6-4 in the quarter-final, hammered Andrew Gilding in the last four before seeing-off Williams.
Wade's success made him the third different winner of the lengthy week in Leicester after Stephen Bunting produced a string of outstanding performances to clinch his fourth title of 2025.
The Bullet backed-up World Series titles in Bahrain and Copenhagen this year and a maiden European Tour crown in April's International Darts Open with a win on Wednesday.
Bunting said: 'I'm so happy that my consistency is there. I'm playing with a smile on my face and, when I've got a smile on my face, I'm dangerous.'
The previous day, it was Bunting's Premier League colleague Chris Dobey who took the spoils when he claimed Event 17 in dramatic fashion at the Mattioli Arena.
The Geordie was able to ride a wave of momentum during his day with crucial victories over Wade and van Veen which earned him a spot in the final against Dirk van Duijvenbode.
Dobey kept cool to beat the Dutchman in a deciding leg and said: 'This is my second win of the year, but just to win one tournament is an achievement.
"I want to be competing with the top boys to give myself more chances of getting to the top.'

Shearer tells Isak to take drastic action amid Liverpool transfer 'mess'
Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has advised Alexander Isak to sack his agent 'on the spot' over the 'f***ing mess' he has made of this summer's ongoing transfer saga. Isak and his camp have made no secret of the fact the striker wishes to leave Newcastle for pastures new after three years in the north east, with Premier League champions Liverpool their priority. But the situation has rapidly turned sour after Newcastle rejected Liverpool's opening bid of £110million for Isak, with the Sweden international accusing the Magpies of 'breaking promises' and betraying his trust. Later on Tuesday evening, Newcastle responded with a statement of their own, refuting claims that Isak had been given assurances that he would be allowed to leave for a direct rival. 'I don't know whether it's still the case that if you do that, you lose out financially because you don't get bonuses. Is that a thing that he perhaps should look at? I don't know. 'But whatever he's doing and saying, and whoever's advising him, for me, it's not the right way.' Loud chants of, 'There's only one greedy b******!', were heard amongst Newcastle's travelling support at Villa Park last weekend – and Shearer thinks fans have every right to be angry. He went on: 'I totally get it, and I totally understand it. There's a lot of anger, there's a lot of frustration, because we all come and go, fans come and go, players come and go, but the one constant that doesn't is the football club. That's far more important than anyone, any individual, any player has ever been and ever will be. 'It's their football club, it's their community, it's what they do, it's what they love, it's what they pay their money for, for their shirts. So, understandably, there's a lot of anger around, and I totally get that when someone says they don't want to play for their club. 'It would happen at any other football club, not just Newcastle. It's happened before and it'll happen again, and those fans would feel exactly the same. 'Now, I understand the frustration from the Liverpool fans' point of view, but they would feel exactly the same if a player was doing that. And it doesn't sit right with me, I don't like it. I don't like what Wissa's doing at Brentford, even if Newcastle were to sign him. 'It's not a good look on a player or an agent to not go out and train and not go out and play when you have a contract behind you. It's not a good look and it's not a good thing to do.' Newcastle's initial bid to to bring in a successor to Isak, namely Yoane Wissa, was rejected out of hand, with Brentford thought to be demanding a fee in the region of £50m for the DR Congo forward. And while talks are ongoing for Wissa, Shearer feels his former club would also need to bring in a replacement for Callum Wilson before the transfer deadline comes around on September 1. More Trending He added: 'My view is the same as it was three or four weeks ago. If Newcastle can get players in to replace him, and if Newcastle receive a bid they want to accept, then it may happen. 'If that doesn't happen, then he stays, and it becomes really messy. If Liverpool want him, then they put in an offer Newcastle will accept, and if Newcastle can get two players in, because that's what they need, one to replace Isak and one to replace Wilson, then fine. 'They've been trying to do that for the past four or five weeks and haven't been able to. Whether they can do that in the next 10 days is doubtful, but there's still time. 'I think we're just sat here guessing, but last night's statement hasn't done him any favours whatsoever in terms of trying to get Newcastle onside or forcing them into a decision, I think they'll just go the opposite way.' Ruben Amorim warned over 'massive' Man Utd dilemma as veteran backed for surprise return
Altay Bayindir's error gifted Arsenal a 1-0 win over Manchester United in their opening Premier League fixture, and Ruben Amorim has been urged to sort the club's goalkeeper crisis Ruben Amorim is facing a goalkeeping conundrum after Altay Bayindir's blunder in Manchester United 's loss to Arsenal. The club's woes between the sticks worsened on Sunday when Turkish international Bayindir flapped at a first-half corner, allowing Riccardo Calafiori to score the only goal of the match. Regular No. 1 Andre Onana was absent for the Premier League clash at Old Trafford after a hamstring injury saw him miss pre-season. The former Inter Milan keeper has also been under constant scrutiny for his performances since joining in July 2023. When asked in his post-Arsenal press conference if he should have selected veteran shot-stopper Tom Heaton, who shone during the summer friendlies, instead of Bayindir, Amorim became rather defensive. However, that's exactly what ex-United and Wrexham shot-stopper Ben Foster believes the Portuguese head coach should do for their next game at Fulham this Sunday. That is despite the fact that the 39-year-old former Burnley star hasn't played in the Premier League since the beginning of 2020. While Foster thinks Heaton would be the most suitable short-term option, he has reiterated his recent call for United to sign either Emiliano Martinez or Gianlugii Donnarumma before the summer transfer window closes in less than two weeks or risk another disappointing season. Speaking on his Fozcast podcast, Foster said: "This is a massive problem for the next game. It asks all sorts of questions and there's going to be so much talk surrounding it coming into that next game. "Do you start with Bayindir, whose confidence will be low now after the first game? With Onana, people will be going, 'Well, he's not much better.' There's a lot of pressure. Tom Heaton, I would trust him to give me a six-and-a-half out of 10 performance. "It just forces Man United's hand to go and sign a proper goalkeeper. I think if you can get a Martinez or a Donnarumma, you've just got to do it. If you sign that player, it's going to be the difference between mid-table misery or really pushing for that top six." Despite the goalkeeping crisis at United, Amorim seemed satisfied with his current options when questioned about the situation after the Arsenal match. Amorim said: "I'm happy with the three goalkeepers. He [Bayindir] chooses to get the ball, but he's getting pushed. That is my feeling when I see the play. "You choose to push a player [out of the way] or to get the ball in that moment. He needs to use his hands to catch the ball, not push players. He chooses to push players and will let the ball pass." Meanwhile, Rio Ferdinand has also given a scathing assessment of Bayindir's performance during the club's opening Premier League fixture. Speaking on Rio Presents, the United icon expressed serious reservations about the ex-Fenerbahce keeper. "What I would say is that it was a cheap goal," he said. "We gave away a goal. The keeper has got to be better. He'll be hugely disappointed, because this was his chance. "The manager has gone with him and backed him and he's had, really, one thing to do in his penalty area and he didn't pass the test."
