Ben Foster names two signings who can save Man Utd from 'mid-table misery'

Ben Foster says Manchester United have little choice but to sign a 'proper goalkeeper' and should be targeting one of Gianluigi Donnarumma or Emiliano Martinez in order to to escape 'mid-table misery' this season. United were much the better team in their Premier League opener against Arsenal, but were let down by an Altay Bayindir error for Riccardo Calafiori's 13th-minute header, which ultimately proved to be the winner. It was widely assumed that Andre Onana had missed Sunday's 1-0 defeat through injury, but Ruben Amorim confirmed that the Cameroonian was fully fit and his omission was down to the 'balance' of the team. It leaves Amorim with an almighty selection headache ahead of the side's trip to Craven Cottage to face Fulham next weekend, with 39-year-old Tom Heaton the only other option in United's first-team squad. The Red Devils have until the transfer window closes on September 1 to bring in a new shot-stopper and there have been calls for Donnarumma to be brought to Old Trafford after the Italian was discarded by PSG boss Luis Enrique. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. Martinez is another goalkeeper who has been linked with a move to the Theatre of Dreams throughout the course of the summer, but Aston Villa are reportedly adamant that their number one is not for sale. 'It just forces Manchester United's hand now to go and sign a proper goalkeeper,' ex-United 'keeper Foster said of Bayindir's shaky display on his Ben Foster – The Cycling GK YouTube channel. 'I think if you can get a Martinez or Donnarumma then you've just got to do it now. You've got to do it. 'If you sign that player then it's going to be the difference between mid-table misery or really pushing for that top six and I think if they can get that goalkeeper in then they can push for the top six. 'I said in our predictions the other day that Manchester United could get a sneaky fourth or fifth, but that's on the proviso that they get a proper goalkeeper in.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video According to Foster, Amorim should start with veteran goalkeeper Heaton against Fulham should United fail to sign anyone before Sunday's contest. 'You need to be behind the scenes to know where everybody is at. Tom Heaton hasn't played a lot of football,' Foster said of Amorim's options. 'He's played some pre-season friendlies, Onana didn't play any because he got injured and then Bayindir has obviously been fit all the way through. 'I think that's the overriding decision as to why he started the game, but by all accounts Onana is fit now. 'What this does now is it is a massive problem for the next game, it's a massive headache for the next game and it asks all these sorts of questions. There's going to be so much surrounding it coming into that next game. 'Do you start Bayindir, whose confidence will be low after this first game? People will be going, 'Onana isn't much better and there's a lot of pressure on him'… Tom Heaton, I would trust him to give me a six and a half or seven and a half out of ten.' Setting aside United's goalkeeping issues, Foster felt Amorim's men were largely impressive against Arsenal, with new signing Matheus Cunha producing an 'absolutely brilliant' performance. 'I thought they were fantastic in the game and didn't deserve to lose, they definitely didn't deserve to lose the game,' he added. More Trending 'We were buzzing off Cunha and Mbeumo, we were buzzing off that front three a few weeks back and Cunha was just different level. 'He's always positive and he always just looks to go forward. He never looks for the simple option and he'll always try and break ranks or exploit space. 'He'll always try and get his shot off which, at times, does annoy some of the other players because he's happy to shoot from 40 yards at times. 'I thought he was absolutely brilliant and man of the match yesterday.' Who would be the better signing for Man Utd? For more stories like this, check our sport page. Premier League ace to snub 'dream' Rangers transfer in favour of £8million deal

Rangers have reportedly missed out on signing Manchester City youngster Callum Doyle, with the defender reportedly set to make an £8million move to an EFL Championship side Rangers look set to be snubbed by a young Manchester City star who once described the idea of playing in the Old Firm derby as a "dream". ‌ The Gers have reportedly been involved in a three-way tussle for 21-year-old centre-back Callum Doyle alongside EFL Championship sides Wrexham and Sheffield United. The England under-21 international came up through City's youth system but has managed just two first-team outings for the club. ‌ However, Doyle has excelled during loan spells, helping Sunderland secure promotion from League One in 2022 and guiding Coventry to the Championship play-off final during the following campaign. He subsequently moved to Leicester, where he once again played a role in achieving automatic promotion, this time to the Premier League, before spending last season with Norwich. ‌ Doyle confirmed earlier this summer that he was prepared to leave City permanently. According to The Athletic, Rangers showed interest but now look set to be beaten by Wrexham, who are close to completing a deal worth up to £8million. If the report is accurate, it would be the second time the Gers have lost out to the Hollywood-owned club during the current transfer window. Leicester's Conor Coady was expected to arrive at Ibrox earlier this summer, but he opted to move to Wrexham instead after they forked out £2m for his services. Doyle's decision to opt for the Welsh side could come as a shock, given his previous admission about his boyhood ambition of facing Celtic. Speaking last year, as City geared up to take on Brendan Rodgers' team in a pre-season clash, he said: "[I'm] probably [most looking forward to] Celtic. I've always dreamed since I was a little kid to play against Celtic. Since I was watching the derbies between Celtic and Rangers, I feel like it'll be a good game, a good test and a good battle." Doyle played in the second half of the match in the US, fulfilling a lifelong dream. Given his affection for the Old Firm derby, Rangers would have seemed an ideal fit. ‌ However, it's been suggested that location is crucial for the young player, who resides in Manchester. Wrexham have already smashed their transfer record three times this summer after clinching promotion to the Championship in April. The club has achieved three back-to-back promotions under the stewardship of actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Nathan Broadhead currently holds the title of Wrexham's priciest player after they splashed out a fee which could escalate up to £10m for the Ipswich winger last week. ‌ The signing of Doyle would take Wrexham's total expenditure in the current transfer window to an estimated £30m. Meanwhile, Rangers boss Russell Martin has dismissed wild rumours that Nico Raskin has asked to leave the club. Martin confessed last week that the Belgian midfielder had been unsettled by summer speculation over his future. However, that led to unsupported claims online that the 24-year-old had lodged a formal transfer request. The Ibrox boss has now moved to ease supporters' worries after clarifying that Ruskin's attention is firmly on facing Club Brugge in the Champions League ‌ Martin said: "No, I've not heard anything (about him asking to leave). Not at all. He's been brilliant. I'm pretty sure Kevin (Thelwell, sporting director) and Patrick (Stewart, chief executive) would have told me if we'd heard that sooner."

Liverpool APPROVE British record Alexander Isak transfer with Marc Guehi also wanted in £165m double-deal

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) LIVERPOOL have sanctioned a British record £130million move for Alexander Isak next week – confident that Newcastle will finally let the wantaway striker leave. And they also still want to land Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guehi for £35m. Liverpool have already had one bid of £110m turned down for Swede Isak but will not make any official approach until after Monday's clash with Eddie Howe's Newcastle side. The atmosphere at St James' Park will already be hostile enough and the Reds do not want to inflame the situation any further. But they make their second move big for the striker who was frozen out of Toon by Howe for Saturday's 0-0 season opener at Villa Park. READ MORE SPORT STORIES EZE DOES IT Tottenham reach £60million agreement to sign Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace During that game the Toon Army chanted: 'There's only one greedy b*****d', to make their feelings known about a striker who has downed tools, refused to play and is to be fined for missing the Villa game. Their hero worship for the front man who has scored 62 goals in three seasons since signing from Real Sociedad for £63m has disintegrated into bitterness and spite. Isak will not only be left out again by Howe but, as things stand, he will not even attend the Liverpool clash. With Guehi - who appeared to snub Oliver Glasner after Sunday's draw at Chelsea - ongoing negotiations with Palace are understood to be amicable because Eagles chairman Steve Parish and Kop CEO of football Michael Edwards have a solid relationship. CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS There is increasing anxiety at Anfield over the stance of centre-back Ibrahima Konate who is refusing a new deal with only this season left on his current contract. He is keen to join former team mate Trent Alexander-Arnold at Real Madrid and Liverpool would consider selling this window or in January rather than let him leave for free next summer. 'That bothers me' - Jamie Carragher tells Liverpool NOT to sign £150million Alexander Isak from Newcastle Guehi, aged 25 like Konate, is seen as the ideal solution while the signings of him and Isak would create a world-record spend across any transfer window by any club - that mark currently held by Chelsea who forked out £391m in 2023. Slot told the Anfield hierarchy well before the end of last season that he saw Isak as central to the mega-spending masterplan of restructuring the squad that went on to claim the Premier League. That has not changed despite the arrival of £69m striker Hugo Ekitike from Frankfurt and him scoring in both the Community Shield and Prem opening-day win over Bournemouth. With sales expected to have topped £230m by the end of the transfer window, it is understood a decision has now been made to try to end that Isak saga by paying an extra £20m. A likely total price of £130m would also allow Newcastle to double their money on the 25 year old and save face on the sale they have grown to accept is becoming inevitable. Harvey Elliott, a £40m target for West Ham, could come into the equation in a part-exchange deal, depending on what choice the attacking midfielder makes. Howe made it clear after the Villa game that he wants the stand-off with Isak resolved as he continues his pursuit of Brentford's Yoane Wissa. 6 6 Newcastle are still desperate to land Brentford star Yoane Wissa to replace Isak Credit: Getty He stressed: 'We would like a resolution. I am talking about myself, I am sure the ownership, and the players. 'We need that clarity. You don't need any distraction. But I am not in control of that. I think only one person really (Isak) can control that.' SunSport understands that long-held discussions with Isak's representatives have ensured that personal terms will not be a problem. Newcastle have so far been reluctant to engage with Liverpool amidst attempts to first bring in replacements having lost out to Manchester United for Benjamin Sesko and, ironically, Liverpool for Ekitike. The Bees have now upped their valuation of Wissa from £40m to £60m but the DR Congo attacker – also left out at the weekend – is digging in for a move to the North East having removed all association with the club from his Instagram account. But Wissa is almost certain to get his wish - and a deal could even be struck before the weekend. 6 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW
