Meet the mother-daughter makeup artist duo beautifying Durban's streets
The pair offer affordable beauty and makeup services ranging from R20 to R600.
Nomusa is adamant about supporting and nurturing her daughter's passions and dreams.
Durban's streets are getting glammed up one face beat at a time.
Nomusa Mthembu, a 36-year-old trained makeup artist and her 16-year-old daughter Linathi Mthembu are Durban residents who have turned their skills and passion for beauty into their own business, Cocoablush Makeup.
Born and raised in the KwaZulu-Natal south coast town of Port Shepstone, Nomusa gained her makeup artistry qualification at Face to Face Beauty and Makeup Design School. She tells TRUELOVE about herself and what drove her to start Cocoablush Makeup.
'I grew up in a warm, loving family - we didn't have much. I'm the last born at home from my mother's and my father's side,' Nomusa says.
'What really sparked my passion for makeup was my spouse, [who] continuously motivated me even when I felt like I could not accomplish this dream, and he kept me driven. Also, the fact that I grew up potentially hoping to go into TV production.'
Beauty on a budget
What makes Cocoablush Makeup so special is how accessible and affordable it is. The pair base themselves in the busy flea market area on Doctor A.B. Xuma Street, Durban. They offer beauty services like brow shaping, lash extensions, soft and full glam makeup, nail art and microblading, with their services ranging from R20 to R600.
Nomusa has been showing Linathi the ropes of the business of beauty, creating an environment for the teen to be a talented makeup artist in her own right.
Linathi tells us, 'Growing up, I really loved playing around with makeup and doing looks on myself and family members. So, through the support of my mom, who's also into beauty and supporting me and encouraging me to continue on Cocoablush Makeup, I wanted to share my love for makeup with others and maybe even help people feel more confident through looks they love.'
She continues, 'What I really see for Cocoablush and I hope happens [is] to know that Cocoa Blush is worldwide and maybe in a few years I'll be doing makeup for local events or even collaborating with bigger brands or even influencers. I'd love for Cocoablush to be a space where I can keep learning and showing my passions to the world.'
A mother nurturing her child's passion
The support that Nomusa and Linathi have for one another is incomparable, and it shows just how important it is to take your child's interests seriously.

'My relationship with my mom working together and collaborating together on Cocoablush Makeup has - we've grown very close and because working towards something together really did get us closer. She helps me with business stuff and gives me advice on makeup and I love having her support. It's like we're a team,' Linathi shares.
Nomusa is all about nurturing her daughter's passions and talents, and she says, 'As a young mom, I believe in supporting a child's dream. [It] can be super beneficial for their growth and development. It can help build their confidence, encourage creativity and create [a] sense of independence.
'When parents willingly support their child's passion, it shows that they really do believe in their child and their child's ability, which can really empower the child. Plus, it can help them develop important life skills like perseverance and problem-solving. Ultimately, supporting a child's dream can help them become more well-grounded and fulfilled individuals.'

AI in Africa to Top $16.5B by 2030: Mastercard Explores Path for Continued Digital Transformation
Key insights from Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria and Morocco demonstrate AI's potential to drive financial inclusion, job creation and innovation. Up to 230 million digital jobs projected in Sub-Saharan Africa by 2030 – but infrastructure, regulation and local talent remain critical gaps. NAIROBI, Kenya, August 06, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mastercard has today released its latest whitepaper, Harnessing the transformative power of AI in Africa, a pan-African study of the continent's readiness, opportunity and roadmap for responsible artificial intelligence (AI) adoption. The whitepaper provides detailed insights into how AI—if deployed responsibly and inclusively—can unlock transformative outcomes across the continent's major industries, including agriculture, healthcare, education, energy and finance. With Africa's AI market projected to grow from USD 4.5 billion in 2025 to USD 16.5 billion by 2030 according to a recent report from Statista, the paper presents a clear case for multi-stakeholder collaboration and investment. It highlights how Africa's unique demographics, mobile-first infrastructure and entrepreneurial spirit position it as an active architect of the future. Mark Elliott, division president, Africa at Mastercard, commented: "Africa's engagement with AI is already reshaping lives — not just in labs, but in farms, clinics and classrooms. To unlock its full potential, we need investment in infrastructure, data, talent, and policy. At Mastercard, we believe responsible, locally rooted AI can drive inclusive growth and connect more people to opportunity." The whitepaper outlines the potential positive impact of AI on digital infrastructure, policy and governance, research and development, local language processing and investment into Africa. It also explores how AI can accelerate job creation, with up to 230 million digital jobs projected by 2030, and increase access to formal finance through AI-enabled credit scoring and fraud prevention. Greg Ulrich, chief AI and data officer, Mastercard, said: "AI is only as powerful as the trust behind it. At Mastercard, we're committed to building AI that's responsible, inclusive, and built to bring value to our customers, partners and employees. This isn't just innovation—it's innovation with integrity." Regional highlights covered in the whitepaper include: South Africa: South Africa attracted USD 610 million in AI-focused venture capital in 2023, with total AI investment expected to reach USD 3.7 billion by 2030. With the highest data and infrastructure readiness in Africa, the country is solidifying its role as a continental leader in AI research and application. It is home to the Artificial Intelligence Institute of South Africa which serves as a gateway for students and professionals to access world-class education, research and industry news. National plans aim to develop up to 300 AI start-ups and train 5,000 AI professionals by 2030, creating the foundation for a vibrant, homegrown AI ecosystem. Kenya: An emerging leader in AI innovation, Kenya has leveraged its "Silicon Savannah" status to securely deploy AI across sectors. Platforms like Tala use mobile data for credit scoring, while Jacaranda Health's UlizaLlama, an AI-powered chatbot, provides maternal health support in five local languages. The newly launched National AI Strategy (2025–2030) outlines the government's commitment to positioning Kenya as a regional leader in AI research and development, innovation and commercialization for socioeconomic development. Nigeria: Nigeria ranks second in the number of AI startups in Africa and secured USD 218 million in VC investment in 2023. As one of Africa's most dynamic AI ecosystems, Nigeria is using AI to personalize learning (Rising Academies), deliver microfinance via and strengthen governance with AI tools that monitor public fund allocation. With a $1.4 billion projected AI market size by 2025, the government's proactive approach, combined with growing private-sector innovation, suggests promising growth in AI applications. Morocco: An emerging AI hub in North Africa, Morocco is advancing AI adoption across healthcare, energy, agriculture, and finance. Institutions such as Mohammed VI Polytechnic University and DeepEcho are driving local innovation, while the MoroccoAI Annual Conference is shaping national dialogue on the future of AI. Under its Digital 2030 strategy, Morocco aims to attract USD 1.1 billion in investment and create 240,000 digital jobs by 2030. Despite this progress, the whitepaper warns that data fragmentation, language exclusion and regulatory inconsistency could deepen the digital divide. Harnessing the potential of AI in Africa will be instrumental in accelerating financial inclusion and driving the continent's digital and economic growth. Strategic collaborations between governments, fintechs, and global partners will be key to unlocking AI's full impact. Mastercard's whitepaper draws on insights from leading African technologists, policymakers, academics and entrepreneurs, including interviews with UNESCO, the African Center for Economic Transformation, and fintech leaders across the region. "Our strong Q1 results, including 210 basis points of market share gains, are a continuation of the consistent, category-leading growth we've delivered over the past 26 quarters," said Tarang Amin, e.l.f. We remain excited by the significant whitespace we see ahead as we strive to make the best of beauty accessible for all." Three Months Ended June 30, 2025 Results For the three months ended June 30, 2025, compared to the three months ended June 30, 2024: Net sales increased 9% to $353.7 million, primarily driven by strength in both our retailer and e-commerce channels, in the US and internationally. Gross margin decreased approximately 215 basis points to 69%, primarily driven by tariffs, partially offset by favorable foreign exchange impacts and mix. Selling, general and administrative ("SG&A") expenses increased 15.3 million to 195.8 million, or 55% of net sales. Adjusted SG&A (SG&A excluding the items identified in the reconciliation table below) increased 12.9 million to $177.3 million, or 50% of net sales. The increase in SG&A is primarily related to an increase in professional fees, retail fixturing and visual merchandising costs, marketing and digital spend, along with increased depreciation and amortization, offset by lower compensation and benefits expense, and operations costs. Other income, net increased $4.9 million to $5.0 million, primarily driven by an increase in foreign currency gains in the period attributable to currency rate fluctuation. Net income was $33.3 million on a GAAP basis. Adjusted net income (net income excluding the items identified in the reconciliation table below) was $51.3 million. Diluted earnings per share were $0.58 on a GAAP basis. Adjusted diluted earnings per share (diluted earnings per share calculated with adjusted net income excluding the items identified in the reconciliation table below) were $0.89. Adjusted EBITDA (EBITDA excluding the items identified in the reconciliation table below) was $87.1 million, or 25% of net sales, up 12% year over year. Fiscal 2026 Outlook Due to the wide range of potential outcomes related to tariffs, the Company is not providing a full year Fiscal 2026 financial outlook at this time. For the first half of Fiscal 2026, the Company expects the following: Net sales growth above the 9% net sales growth reported in Q1 Adjusted EBITDA margins of approximately 20% as compared to approximately 23% in the first half of Fiscal 2025, primarily due to higher tariff costs Acquisition of rhode Subsequent to quarter end, on August 5, 2025, the Company consummated the acquisition of HRBeauty LLC ("rhode"), a fast-growing, multi-category lifestyle beauty brand founded by Hailey Bieber for $800.0 million at closing, subject to customary adjustments, inclusive of $600.0 million in cash, funded via Term Loan, and $200.0 million of stock, with potential earnout consideration of up to $200.0 million based on the future growth of the brand over a three-year timeframe. Fifth Amendment to Amended Credit Agreement On August 5, 2025, the Company entered into the Fifth Amendment to the Amended and Restated Credit Agreement (the "Fifth Amendment"). The Fifth Amendment, among other things, established a term loan facility in an aggregate principal amount of $600.0 million (the "Term Facility"), made customary changes in connection with adding a term loan facility, increased the maximum permitted consolidated total net leverage ratio financial covenant and increased the interest rate margin for loans under the Company's existing revolving line of credit. The proceeds of the Term Facility were made available to e.l.f. Cosmetics and certain other subsidiaries of the Company to pay a portion of the consideration for the acquisition of rhode. Elf Beauty tops quarterly estimates on resilient demand for affordable lipsticks and skincare
(Reuters) -Elf Beauty beat first-quarter sales and profit estimates on Wednesday, fueled by resilient demand for its affordable products including lip oils and blush tints at retailers and online channels, despite broader retail slowdown. Shares of the company were up about 5% after the bell. The beauty retailer known for its vegan lip oils — available at drugstores and supermarkets including Walgreens, Target as well as Dollar Tree — has been able to resonate with millennial and Gen Z shoppers, who are often on the hunt for trendy makeup and skincare products. This, in turn, has been benefiting sales growth at Elf — short for eyes, lips and face — offering products priced as low as $2 at U.S. retailers including Walmart and Ulta Beauty. Meanwhile, luxury beauty makers such as Estee Lauder have been struggling to revive demand and the Trump administration's unpredictable trade policy has disrupted business operations worldwide. The company continues to refrain from providing an annual forecast owing to tariff-related uncertainty. Elf, which acquired Hailey Bieber's makeup brand Rhode, increased product prices by $1 across categories starting August 1 to counter trade-related costs, similar to broader industry peers. The company, which has reduced its production from China to "little less" than 75% from about 100% back in 2019, has also been optimizing its supply chain and diversifying its business to be able to address tariff-related headwinds, CEO Tarang Amin told Reuters on Wednesday. The company's quarterly revenue of $353.7 million beat estimates of $350.3 million, as per data compiled by LSEG. On an adjusted basis, the company's earnings came in at 89 cents per share, compared with analysts' estimates of 84 cents per share.
