Bulls promote two to URC squad, now content with Currie Cup roster
After making a few changes ahead of their Currie Cup fixture against the Pumas, and promoting two players to the United Rugby Championship (URC) squad, the Bulls say their remaining squad will likely remain unchanged for the duration of the Currie Cup.
The Bulls included several senior and fringe players in their matchday 23s that beat the Western Province 48–23 and the Sharks 64–0 (both teams that have opted to play even younger sides) while gradually promoting players to the URC squad that will feature from next month.
The team facing the Pumas at Loftus at 3pm on Saturday includes two debutants: former Grey College prop Casper Badenhorst and Selborne College old boy Daimon O'Connel, a scrumhalf. That takes the number of debutants up to 11 so far, with assistant coaches James Winstanley and Josh Strauss saying there could be six or seven more.
Klopper and Gans promoted
Still, with senior players Francois Klopper and Stedman Gans (a former Blitzboks star) being promoted to the URC side after good performances, the Bulls coaches said they have more or less a settled squad for the rest of the tournament.
'In the coming weeks, we need to service four teams, being the URC, the Currie Cup, U21 and U19 teams. So we are in the process now of how we are going to allocate players across the various groups,' Winstanley said.
'But we do have a core group that will remain throughout the Currie Cup. It's anticipated that that group will stay and there won't be any changes as we move towards the tail-end.
'In previous seasons and at other franchises, you see the URC players come into the Currie Cup. As it stands now, we have a Currie Cup squad that will complete the tournament.'
Zak Burger to captain the Bulls against Pumas
Scrumhalf Zak Burger captains the team on Saturday in the absence of Nama Xaba, who along with experienced centre Stravino Jacobs, picked up a small injury. The pair should be back in a week or two.
Strauss backed Burger, Jeandré Rudolph and Springbok lock Marvin Orie to provide leadership in what is still a fairly young side.
JJ Theron comes in for Xaba at flanker, Jean Erasmus replaces Klopper at tighthead and Aphiwe Dyantyi shifts to wing to accommodate Katlego Letebele on the right. Cornel Smit also gets his first start, in place of Gans.
Bulls starting XV: Boeta Chamberlain, Katlego Letebele, Cornel Smit, Chris Smit, Aphiwe Dyantyi, Jaco van der Walt, Zak Burger (Capt), Jeandre Rudolph, JJ Theron, Junior Pokomela, Marvin Orie, Sintu Manjezi, Jean Erasmus, Juann Else, Dylan Smith. Bench: Esethu Mnebelele, Lizo Gqoboka, Casper Badenhorst, Dylan de Leeuw, Jaco Grobbelaar, Marco Ferreira, Daimon O'Connel, PA van Niekerk.

Bulls coach Nomlomo feels veteran scrumhalf Schreuder has added touch of class to Cavaliers
Nippy winger Riyaad Bam scored the only try for the Bulls during their Currie Cup defeat to the Pumas in Pretoria. Bulls Currie Cup coach Phiwe Nomlomo feels veteran scrumhalf Louis Schreuder's return from Bath in the Premiership is helping knit together an already fearsome Boland Cavaliers backline. The Bulls face their high-riding 'brothers' – Bulls owners Johann Rupert and Patrice Motsepe are also majority shareholders in Boland – in round four of the competition at Boland Rugby Stadium in Wellington on Sunday (3pm kick-off). The hosts are fresh off a 29-10 bonus-point win against the Lions in round three in Wellington that increased their chances of making the Currie Cup play-offs. The Bulls are still smarting from a 41-7 humbling by the Pumas at home after two convincing wins. The two teams are joined on 11 points by log leaders the Pumas. 'Boland are pretty sharp,' Nomlomo said during an online media conference on Tuesday afternoon. 'Louis Schreuder came on at nine and he's a seasoned campaigner. He's literally just won the championship with Bath and now he comes in, so he'll be a massive help from that perspective.'

Salmaan Moerat set to miss Springboks' matches as Western Province sweat over Zain Davids
While Western Province are still sweating over the fitness of captain and flanker Zain Davids ahead of their match against the Cheetahs, it also looks like they will be without Springbok Salmaan Moerat for the remainder of the Currie Cup. On Monday, Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus revealed that Moerat was set to make his first appearance for Western Province in the Currie Cup this weekend in Bloemfontein. However, the Bok lock suffered a knee injury at training and is now doubtful for the rest of Province's domestic campaign, as well as the Springboks' Rugby Championship matches. Moerat is one of a handful of Springboks outside the current squad who were sent back to their unions to get some game time in the Currie Cup. But Erasmus let slip that Moerat is currently sidelined. 'We've cut the squad a little bit, but when we have meetings, we've still got guys like Jaden [Hendrikse], Faf [de Klerk], Mapiemps (Makazole Mapimpi) joining virtually. Salmaan, unfortunately, got injured last week. He would have played this week [for Western Province in the Currie Cup],' said Erasmus.

OPINION: ‘Little guys' ensure 2025 Currie Cup is wide open
It is surprising that Pumas boss Jimmy Stonehouse has never really been in the frame to coach a 'bigger team'. How quickly things can change in sport. A week ago the Bulls and Lions were the only unbeaten teams in the Currie Cup, and considered the hot favourites to win the title this season, having each won their opening two games, while the other six teams had all lost one of their first two matches. A week on and all eight Premier Division teams have now lost at least one game, blowing the competition wide open. And besides the Sharks and Western Province, who have yet to win in three outings each, all six other teams look like they're in with a chance of going all the way this season. And that's because the so-called smaller teams like Griquas, Pumas and Boland are playing full-strength sides against the 'big boys' who're resting a number of their first-choice players. Anything can happen on any weekend, as we saw this last weekend. Pumas stun Bulls at Loftus I don't know when last all four winners in a week were the 'little guys' – Boland beat the Lions 29-10, the Cheetahs beat the Sharks 7-5, the Pumas beat the Bulls 41-7 and Griquas beat Western Province 47-17. What a remarkable round of results. You've simply got to doff your cap to those smaller unions, and especially their coaching teams, who're really up against it in South African rugby. Pumas boss Jimmy Stonehouse especially deserves far more credit than he gets. His team are always competitive and tough to play against and they fear no one. It is surprising Stonehouse wasn't even in the discussion to take over the Bulls coaching job when Jake White left a few weeks ago. I wonder why not? I also wonder if he's ever been considered to take charge of a bigger team, which plays internationally? Would the Lions, for example, be interested in him were they to make a change at URC coaching level? Or, is a guy like Stonehouse happy to stay in the beautiful Mbombela area and keep developing young players who've not cracked it at the bigger unions? Anyway, well done to the 'little guys' who've really shaken up the Currie Cup. If nothing else, we're in for an interesting few weeks as the teams chase a top-four finish for a place in the semi-finals.
