Boulder International Film Festival considers impact of possible Sundance move to Colorado

CBS News17-03-2025

Boulder International Film Festival
, BIFF, rolled out the red carpet for another successful year. Celebrities, like actress Jane Lynch, came to Boulder to receive awards and talk about films.
"Everybody is so nice. This is such a wonderful town," Lynch told CBS News Colorado.
She received the Entertainer of the Year award on Saturday night. Lynch was one of 60 film industry celebrities who attended the festival. BIFF attracts about 25,000 people every year.
"We have such great, enthusiastic audiences. Filmmakers come back year after year, and it's just so heartwarming to see everyone," said Robin Beecks during a BIFF event.
Robin Beecks, and her sister Kathy, plan the entire festival from their offices on Pearl Street. When Boulder decided to make a bid for the Sundance Film Festival, the Beecks were among the stakeholders brought into the conversation.
"Your first reaction is, 'What?' How will that work?' said Kathy Beecks.
The sisters have had several conversations with community leaders and Sundance organizers, and are happy to see Boulder on the short list of contenders for the move.
"There are still question marks, but we think we can make it work, and we think there could be some benefits," Kathy added.
"Is Boulder big enough for two festivals?" CBS News Colorado's Shaun Boyd asked.
"We do think the town is big enough because there is a lot of outlying...you can spread a bit," Robin Beecks responds.
Sundance hosts about 86,000 visitors, so organizers are looking at hotel rooms, restaurant space, and venues for screenings.
"We have a lot of historical knowledge over twenty years about how to make things work in this town," Robin said.
These festivals attract very different audiences. BIFF shows films that have already been released, but probably haven't made it to Colorado yet. Sundance requires its films premiere at the festival.
BIFF would have to change its dates to accommodate Sundance, but over all Kathy and Robin are looking at the ways the two festivals could work together.
"It's important to them that we are healthy, that we grow and thrive," Robin added.
The Beecks see economic viability not only for their own festival, but for Boulder and the entire state.

Barack and Michelle Obama Share Rare New Family Photo for Daughter Sasha's 24th Birthday

Barack and Michelle Obama shared a rare new family photo on Tuesday, June 10, in celebration of daughter Sasha's 24th birthday. The former first family is smiling and embracing one another in the picture, as the parents shared uplifting captions dedicated to their younger daughter. Michelle recently opened up about their elder daughter Malia's attempt to "distinguish" herself by dropping her famous last name in her budding filmmaking career. President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama shared a rare new family photo this week in celebration of their daughter Sasha's 24th birthday. The picture features the full Obama family — Barack, Michelle, Sasha and Malia — with their arms around one another. The former president is dressed casually, in a white polo and gray slacks, while his wife and daughters are in sundresses. "Happy birthday, Sasha! Watching you grow into the incredible woman you are has been a true gift. I'll always be proud of you and will always be here for you," Barack, 63, captioned the post. Michelle, 61, shared the same photo on her page, with the caption, "Happy birthday to my sweet girl, Sasha! Can't believe how quickly time has flown. I'm so proud of the woman you've become. Love you always!" Since leaving the White House, Malia and Sasha have lived more private lives than their parents. Though Malia, 26, entered the film and TV industry in recent years, which has required her to make occasional public appearances, Sasha has remained out of the spotlight and rarely appears at events or in photographs. Michelle recently opened up about her daughters' attempts to "distinguish" themselves from their famous family now that they're adults. During an appearance on Kate and Oliver Hudson's podcast, Sibling Revelry, the former first lady shared her feelings on Malia's decision to drop her last name and use her middle name, going by "Malia Ann" in her budding filmmaking career. The former first daughter casually revealed the name change when she debuted The Heart, a short film that she wrote and directed, at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. "I mean, it is very important for my kids to feel like they've earned what they are getting in the world, and they don't want people to assume that they don't work hard, that they're just naturally, just handed things," Michelle said. "They're very sensitive to that — they want to be their own people." "We were like, 'They're still going to know it's you, Malia,' " she added. "But we respected the fact that she's trying to make her way." While she dropped her famous last name, "Ann" is still deeply significant in the Obama family, as it's the name of Barack's late mother, Ann Dunham, who died in 1995. Michelle shared that Malia and Sasha have both sought independence from their family legacy since they were teens. "They are young adult women, but they definitely went through a period in their teen years where it was the push away ... [where] you're trying to distinguish yourself," she told Kate and Oliver. Now that Malia and Sasha are adults, and the family no longer faces the pressures of the White House, Michelle said her daughters have a better understanding of their parents and are "embracing our parenting principles." "They have a clearer understanding of why we did a lot of what we did," she explained. "They understand us as full human beings now, in the same way that I think I discovered that about my parents when I went away to college." Read the original article on People

Things Escalate Quickly On a Couple's Trip in Trailer for OH, HI! Starring Molly Gordon and Logan Lerman — GeekTyrant

A new trailer has been released for the romantic comedy feature Oh, Hi! , starring Molly Gordon ( The Bear ) and Logan Lerman ( The Perks of Being a Wallflower ) as couple Iris and Isaac, along with Geraldine Viswanathan ( Thunderbolts* ) and John Reynolds ( Stranger Things ) as their friends, Max and Kenny. The film is directed by Sophie Brooks ( The Boy Downstairs ) from a script Brooks co-wrote with Molly Gordon. The synopsis reads: 'Iris has met the perfect guy in Isaac. He's cute, charming, funny, and he's booked them their first romantic getaway. A picturesque farmhouse, with amazing views all around. What could go wrong? Apparently, everything. This clever and charmingly odd dark comedy takes us through highs & lows of modern dating in increasingly unhinged but genuinely understandable ways. Iris (Molly Gordon) knows that she and Isaac (Logan Lerman) are made for each other, and she'll do anything to get him to see it as well.' Oh, Hi! debuted at Sundance Film Festival this year, and is about to play at the Tribeca Film Festival. It looks like a fun flick, and like one that will serve a twist or two. Check out the trailer below, and watch Oh, Hi! when it's released in theaters on July 25th.

Molly Gordon kidnaps Logan Lerman in ‘Oh, Hi!' trailer. Fans are still on her side.

The new movie Oh, Hi!, which just dropped a trailer that suggests that Misery really could have been a romantic comedy with the right approach. It's a classic tale: Girl meets boy. Boy invites girl on their first weekend away as a couple. Girl playfully ties boy to the bed … only for him to inform her, while he's still handcuffed, that he's actually not looking for a relationship right now. Naturally, girl never gets those handcuff keys, and boy remains tied to the bed. Yikes! Oh, Hi!, which debuted earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, is directed by Sophie Brooks and co-written by The Bear's Molly Gordon. It stars Gordon as Iris, a girl who completely misinterpreted her situationship's intentions on their weekend getaway. Logan Lerman, meanwhile, plays the commitment-phobic Isaac, who Iris believed was her boyfriend. But Iris isn't an idiot: He took her on this trip! He made her scallops! If all that evidence wasn't proof the two were on the road to love, she's not sure what is. And with Isaac still handcuffed after their whole 'what are we?!' conversation went horribly awry, she has a plan: She'll do whatever she can to make him want to take the next step in their relationship — as long as he doesn't find a way to call the police first. While the movie doesn't exactly frame Iris as of sound mind here, people who watched the movie trailer really seem to get her plight. Sure, many people in the comments section on YouTube pointed to Iris's deranged behavior, which some said would have been interpreted much more negatively had the gender roles been reversed. However, others totally understood where Iris is coming from: 'The way that this made me feel valid for my situationship telling me he wasn't ready for a relationship after being super romantic with me and feeling like I was going insane,' one person wrote in the YouTube comments. Meanwhile, on TikTok, there were lots of Iris sympathizers. One called her reaction a 'rational response, [to be honest]' while another said that they 'support women's rights and wrongs' before adding, 'but idk she may be right.' 'Totally get where she's coming from,' one commenter declared, while another admitted, 'I'd crash out too if Logan Lerman said that to me.' 'Sending this to everyone i've ever had a situationship with thanks,' one joked, while another said they were just 'one more situationship' away from becoming Iris. It's a perspective Gordon and Brooks understand. In an interview with Deadline earlier this year, Gordon spoke about how the idea for the film came about after she and Brooks both went through breakups. 'We kind of wanted to make something about the communication breakdown of our generation,' Gordon explained. 'I mean, it's always been ridiculously hard to date, but we do feel like it might be the hardest that it's ever been, and we just wanted to kind of poke fun at all the funny experiences that we've had and our friends have had.' In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Brooks said of the film: 'I think a lot of things in our culture about women pursuing love and wanting love become desperate or sad or embarrassing, and it's romantic for a man to be pursuing love and wanting a partner, and it's sad and desperate for a woman to want it. I really push against that. Part of being a human is wanting connection and I think it was exciting for us to kind of lean into some tropes that we thought were funny and absurd. Molly and I talk about how this movie is — If we were 10% crazy, what would we do?' Whether Iris is 10% crazy or a bit larger of a percentage is up for audiences to decide, of course — and how she gets out of the situation with Isaac, ideally alive, is anyone's guess. Oh, Hi! hits theaters on July 25.
