Alan Sheehan hopeful over Malick Yalcouye deal after he saw Swansea beat Crawley

Rhyl Journal21 hours ago
The versatile 19-year-old Brighton player saw Swansea debutant Bobby Wales notch his first goal since joining from Kilmarnock in the summer to add to Ronald's fourth-minute strike. Then another new boy, midfielder Ethan Galbraith, wrapped things up.
'Hopefully we can close the loan deal this week and it will be good to have Malick in the building,' said Swansea boss Alan Sheehan.
'He's a player who will improve us. He has so much energy and he's very highly rated.'
Having seen his side go down to a 1-0 defeat at Middlesbrough on the opening weekend of the Championship, Sheehan was delighted at the attacking intent his team displayed at home.
'There were a lot of pleasing aspects in our attack, although we should have scored five or six,' added Sheehan.
Crawley are still awaiting their first win of the season, but at least Kabongo Tshimanga was able to give the League Two side their first goal of the season when he scored in the 75th minute. Then the Red Devils saw Gavan Holohan sent off eight minutes later to end their hopes of a fightback.
'We can take some encouragement from the fact we were really present in the game. In the second half we pushed them and we looked like the stronger team before the sending off and potentially could have scored another goal to take it to penalties,' said Crawley boss Scott Lindsey.
'We're probably three players away from building our squad and our treatment room is getting full – it's getting tough and we are a bit threadbare.'

Celtic vs Falkirk: Premier Sports Cup action returns to Parkhead as Rodgers aims to continue perfect start

SCOTT BAIN was in the Celtic dugout the last time these two teams clashed in the competition 11 months ago - at the quarter-final stage. But this week the former Celtic goalkeeper could take on his old team-mates at his old shooting ground at Parkhead - in the Premier Sports Cup last 16. 2 Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers Credit: PA 2 Falkirk boss John McGlynn Credit: Kenny Ramsay Celtic host John McGlynn's side in their first domestic cup fixture after receiving a bye to miss the group stage and progress straight to the knockout round. Both sides faced off at the same stadium last September, but Falkirk were in the Championship at that point. Now this is set to be the first of at least four meetings between the two sides after the Bairns won the second tier last season. The last meeting of course ended in a victory for Celts as Brendan Rodgers' men went on to lift the trophy following a penalty shootout win over Rangers at Hampden in December. But while the quarter-final meeting ended in a 5-2 win for the Hoops, it wasn't quite as comfortable as the scoreline suggests. It was actually Falkirk who raced in front TWICE in that tie, having initially taken the lead through Ross MacIver after 11 minutes. Finn Yeats then ensured they held onto their lead at half-time with a stoppage time goal after Paulo Bernardo's equaliser. A brace from Nicolas Kuhn and Adam Idah in the second half guaranteed the win, though, and the first half scares were quickly forgotten about. Kieran Tierney will be available for selection despite the manager revealing he was SICK at half-time of the 2-0 win against Pittodrie. There could be a place in the matchday squad for the first time for new signing Jahmai Simpson-Pusey after he was left out against Aberdeen. Shin Yamada could make his first start after looking promising off the bench in the second half in the Granite City. Falkirk, meanwhile, will likely be without star man Ethan Ross after he suffered a nasty ankle injury against Livingston. Other players expected to be missing for the Bairns include Finn Yeats, Tom Lang, Coll Donaldson and Barney Stewart. Carabao Cup: Huddersfield stun Leicester in shootout drama, Birmingham beat Blades

The goalkeeper Lee Nichols was the hero for Huddersfield, who overcame Championship opponents in Leicester via a penalty shootout following an entertaining 2-2 Carabao Cup first-round draw at the League One club''s Accu Stadium. Huddersfield started strongly and Ruben Roosken and David Kasumu both had strong penalty shouts turned down early on after both appearing to be tripped inside the box. The hosts held Leicester at bay until nine minutes after the break, when the right-back Hamza Choudhury smashed a half-cleared ball into the far top corner. That brought the game to life and Huddersfield reacted best, with Roosken awarded a penalty after Choudhury brought him down. Dion Charles's spot-kick was saved, but the 19-year-old midfielder Dan Vost headed home the rebound in the 65th minute for his first senior goal. Leicester restored their lead three minutes later, with Stephy Mavididi squaring for his fellow substitute Harry Winks to curl the ball into the bottom corner. Again Huddersfield found a response, however, with the youngster Cameron Ashia claiming his second goal in two games by curling a fantastic effort into the top corner for 2-2. That sent the game to a shootout, where Huddersfield prevailed 3-2 as Bilal El Khannouss hit a post and Nicholls saved efforts from Jordan Ayew and Kasey McAteer. The Terriers will face a trip to Sunderland in the second round. Gustavo Hamer produced an early contender for goal of the season but it was not enough to stop Birmingham advancing with a 2-1 victory against Sheffield United thanks to Jay Stansfield's late winner. Stansfield, an England Under-21s international, struck three minutes from time with a deflected effort which book the hosts a home tie against Port Vale. The nine Premier League teams involved in European competition this season – Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, holders Newcastle, Tottenham, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace – will enter the League Cup at the third-round stage. But Hamer's introduction off the bench early in the second half breathed fresh life into the Blades and he stunned the home crowd with a magnificent drive from 50 yards. The midfielder picked up a loose ball in midfield before stepping forward and taking aim, sending a shot beyond James Beadle, a debutant, who had strayed marginally off his line. However, with spot-kicks beckoning, Stansfield twisted and turned inside the area, firing off a shot which was diverted past Adam Davies by a slight touch from a covering defender. Pierce Charles saved twice and Liam Palmer converted the winning spot-kick as the Championship crisis club Sheffield Wednesday beat Bolton of League One 4-2 on penalties. Charles, the only player to retain his place from last Sunday's league defeat at Leicester, kept out efforts from Aaron Morley and Max Conway before stalwart Palmer booked a home derby with Leeds. Victory was well deserved for Henrik Pedersen's young guns despite Wanderers going down to 10 men after the defender Sam Inwood's 30th-minute red card. Pedersen named five teenagers in his starting lineup and Gui Siqueira smashed them into a 20th-minute lead. Bolton equalised for the first time through Jordi Osei-Tutu after 36 minutes. However, the Owls' skipper, Ike Ugbo, restored the visitors' advantage with a cool right-footed finish a minute later. The substitute Thierry Gale's first Bolton goal after 77 minutes looked to have earned penalties, only for Reece Johnson to make it 3-2 after 80 minutes. However, Charles was the hero with his double saves to delight Wednesday's travelling fans. Oakwell hosted another first-round shootout, with Barnsley emerging victorious 5-4 on spot-kicks against Fleetwood after the match finished 2-2. The visitors had forced penalties deep into added time, with Owen Devonport bringing up his side's second equaliser. However, Murphy Cooper was the hero, saving Fleetwood's first penalty by Ryan Graydon and later denying George Morrison as the shootout went to sudden death. Cheltenham scored in each half to ease past Exeter 2-0 – the defender James Wilson gave the hosts the lead in the 28th minute before the midfielder Ryan Broom, back at the club this season after a spell at Fleetwood, gave his side breathing space and set up a visit to Cardiff next month. Manchester United will travel to League Two Grimsby in the Carabao Cup second round as they attempt to bounce back from one of their worst seasons in recent history. The 2023 winners will head for Blundell Park during the week beginning 25 August after being paired with the Mariners in Wednesday night's draw, in which they were the last team team out of the hat. Elsewhere, there are all-Premier League clashes between Bournemouth and Brentford and Wolves and West Ham, while promoted Leeds face a trip to either Bolton or Sheffield Wednesday and Everton will host League One Mansfield at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. Sides involved in Europe this season – Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, League Cup holders Newcastle, Tottenham, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace – will enter the competition in the third round.

Ruben Amorim offers Man Utd flop in £120m deal to sign Carlos Baleba

Manchester United are willing to offer a member of Ruben Amorim's 'bomb squad' in a stunning £120m deal for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba. Cameroon international Baleba is believed to be United's top transfer target for the midfield position. The 21-year-old has enjoyed two impressive seasons at Brighton since his £23m move from Ligue 1 side Lille in 2023. Baleba made just 21 league appearances for Lille but has quickly developed into one of the most highly-rated midfielders in the Premier League and a top target for Manchester United. United have spent almost £200m on attacking players this summer, bringing Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha to Old Trafford. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – sign up, it's an open goal. But Ruben Amorim is well aware of the holes that were in his midfield last season and ideally would have liked to see a new midfielder arrive through the doors. Baleba ticks a lot of boxes for Manchester United and, according to The Independent, has indicated he is 'highly keen' for a move to Old Trafford. But Brighton have insisted they want to keep Baleba at the club for at least one more season and if they do sale, will expect to receive at least £100m. Despite Brighton potentially demanding up to £120m, The Independent say Manchester United are 'actively' trying to complete a deal. Baleba is Ineos' top midfield target and Old Trafford bosses are trying to find creative solutions to meet Brighton's steep demands. One option, it has been claimed, is to use Jadon Sancho as bait in the deal, although Brighton are not believed to be interested in the United winger. Sancho has held talks with a number of Serie A clubs this summer after being placed in Amorim's bomb squad along with Alejandro Garnacho and Antony. Brighton will demand a transfer record for an African player to sell Baleba, with Nicolas Pepe currently holding that accolade following his £72m move to Arsenal in 2019. The Seagulls are in a strong negotiating position as Baleba still has three more years left on his current contract, with Brighton also having an option to extend by 12 months. Significant player sales could alter Manchester United's stance as they are awaiting a first bid from Chelsea for Argentinian winger Garnacho. Sancho and Antony have also been put up for sale, while United are open to offers for Rasmus Hojlund following Benjamin Sesko's £74m move from RB Leipzig. Speaking at a fans' forum last week, Brighton chief executive Paul Barber admitted Baleba could leave but denied any contact with Manchester United. 'Carlos is a fantastic talent,' he said. 'We hope he'll be here for years to come – but it's subject to the dynamics of the football world, which isn't always predictable.' Baleba has been linked with Manchester City as well as Manchester United but Wes Brown believes he should push for a move to Old Trafford. More Trending 'Man United have a big heritage and a big history,' he said. 'You can see with the signings we've made that we're tyring to get back to winning ways. 'He's done really well. He's a player who has probably been under the radar a little bit. He's quick, sharp, he has a brilliant left foot, he gets in your face and he can tackle. 'I think he's the sort of player the manager is looking for in midfield. He's be very exciting. He'd put a stamp on the midfield along with Bruno Fernandes. He'd be a really positive buy.' A number of Manchester United players have reportedly contacted Baleba in a bid to convince him to push for a move to the club. For more stories like this, check our sport page.
