New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan are in the fray for selection in India's Asia Cup squad, which is expected to be picked in the third week of August.
Jaiswal and Test captain Gill have not featured in the last few T20 assignments owing to a packed calendar but their one-month rest period post the five-Test series against England is expected to make them available for the continental tournament.
As per sources in the BCCI, the national selectors are keeping options open even as the Test series against the West Indies at home starts in less than a week's time if India qualify for the final of the continental T20 event which is slated on September 28.
The first Test against the West Indies at Ahmedabad starts on October 2.
It must be mentioned that Jaiswal scored 559 runs at a strike-rate of 160 in the last edition of the IPL while Gill had 650 runs in 15 games at a healthy strike- rate of 155-plus.
Gill's opening partner at Gujarat Titans, Sudharsan was the 'Orange Cap' winner with 759 runs at a SR of 156.
'There is a five week break and with no cricket around, these three should walk into any T20 squad despite stupendous show by Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. In 21 days in Asia Cup, if one plays till final, there are 6 T20 games and that's not much of a workload. But obviously with 17 member squads allowed for the Asia Cup, selectors will weigh options carefully," a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
Keeping the tracks of UAE in mind and also the T20 World Cup in six months time, Jaiswal, Gill and Sudharsan should logically form the core of the top order.
Sudharsan, who made his ODI debut in late 2023 has been in tremendous T20 form.
Another important talking point is the availability of pace spearheads Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.
Both bowlers have been managed carefully after an extended workload across formats and are expected to undergo fitness assessment before the selection meeting. PTI KHS KHS UNG

MS Dhoni breaks silence on CSK future for the first time since IPL 2025, receives applause: 'It's not about one year...'

After staying silent on his Chennai Super Kings (CSK) future for long, MS Dhoni has finally spoken out, dropping a fresh remark on what lies ahead for him with the IPL franchise. Speaking at a private event in Chennai on Saturday, the legendary former captain reaffirmed his commitment to CSK beyond his playing years, describing his bond with the franchise as one for the ages. MS Dhoni spoke about his CSK future(PTI) 'Me and CSK, we are together. You know even for the next 15-20 years (crowd cheers). I hope they don't think I'll be playing for another 15-20 years! But yeah,' Dhoni said with a smile, suggesting his involvement with CSK will continue in some form long after he hangs up his boots. There were speculations that the 44-year-old would step aside after IPL 2024, but Dhoni made an excellent recovery from his knee issue and even took charge of captaincy midway through IPL 2025 after Ruturaj Gaikwad pulled out due to an elbow injury. Dhoni led CSK through a challenging campaign that saw the five-time champions finish bottom of the table, managing only four wins in 14 matches. 'It's not about one year or two years. I will always be sitting in a yellow jersey. You know whether I'll be playing or not in a while, but yeah, you know yourself,' he added, teasing fans who have long speculated about his final season. Just last week, during a separate event, Dhoni had sidestepped a direct question on his playing future. However, he did not hold back on Saturday while reflecting on CSK's disappointing season and what lies ahead. 'Yes, the last couple of years have not been good for us. We have not been up to the mark. But what is important is for you to see the learnings. Yes, you had a bad season. But what went wrong? And that was the question for us last year also,' he said. Gaikwad will be back The former India captain had previously admitted that CSK's batting issues were a concern during the 2025 season but expressed confidence that the return of Ruturaj Gaikwad would help address the imbalance. 'Rutu will be coming back. He got injured. But he will be coming back. So, we are quite sorted now,' Dhoni said, also pointing to the upcoming December mini-auction as a window to plug remaining gaps. In a heartfelt closing, Dhoni once again credited CSK and the city of Chennai for shaping his career: 'So, I feel the relationship over the years has grown. It helped me improve as a person. It helped me improve as a cricketer. CSK just happened. I think it's good for Chennai. So, today it's good for me also.'

Inside BCCI's RTI Escape: How Indias Richest Sports Body Avoided Public Scrutiny In New Sports Bill

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has once again displayed its political and financial clout, dodging a long-looming inclusion under the Right to Information (RTI) Act. In a significant development that is already stirring debate across the sports fraternity, the Union Sports Ministry has amended the National Sports Governance Bill to exempt BCCI from being classified as a "public authority" — a title that would have opened it to public scrutiny. The earlier draft of the Sports Bill tabled in Parliament on July 23 had explicitly included all National Sports Federations (NSFs) within the scope of the RTI Act, 2005. It aimed to enforce accountability across Indian sport by mandating transparency in decision-making, team selections, fund usage, and governance. However, a key clause — 'a recognised sports organisation shall be considered a public authority under the Right to Information Act' — has now been quietly omitted. The revised version of the Bill specifies that only bodies 'receiving grants or financial assistance from the Central or State Government' will be considered public authorities under RTI, effectively sparing the BCCI, which is financially self-reliant and does not receive direct government funding. Why BCCI Was Let Off the Hook Sources within the Sports Ministry clarified that the amendment was necessary to remove legal grey areas and prevent the Bill from facing potential litigation. 'The amended clause defines public authority as an entity relying on government funds or assistance. This ensures compliance with the RTI Act,' a senior ministry official told The Indian Express. The exemption appears tailored to the BCCI's long-standing argument — that its operations are entirely independent of government subsidies, and hence it should not be forced into transparency obligations meant for publicly funded bodies. Despite this, watchdogs argue that the BCCI has enjoyed indirect government benefits such as tax exemptions, land grants, and access to public infrastructure. Olympic Push Forces BCCI's Partial Compliance While BCCI may have dodged the RTI net, it isn't walking away entirely unscathed. The amended Sports Bill still mandates that the BCCI must register as a National Sports Federation (NSF) — a pre-condition for India's ambition to include cricket in the 2036 Olympics, where India is bidding to be host. This compliance will bring new obligations: the formation of an Ethics Commission, Athletes Committee, and implementation of the Safe Sports policy, among others. Moreover, any instance of government assistance — including use of stadiums, security, or land — would open a window for scrutiny under the RTI Act, albeit limited to those specific interactions. Expert Opinions: Transparency vs Autonomy The move has reignited discussions around sports governance and accountability. Legal experts and former officials cite the Supreme Court's 2016 RM Lodha Committee recommendations and the Law Commission's 275th report in 2018, both of which endorsed the inclusion of BCCI under RTI due to its public function and historical government benefits. Critics argue that while financial independence is a valid point, the BCCI's monopolistic control over cricket in India — a sport followed by over a billion people — necessitates transparency. 'You can't be a private body when it suits you and a public institution when it benefits you,' noted a senior legal analyst.

Like Bumrah, Siraj's workload needs care to avoid injury: RP Singh

Mohammed Siraj is in the same league as premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah and it is important to manage his workload carefully to keep him injury-free, said former Indian fast bowler RP Singh. Siraj bowled 185.3 overs in the recently-concluded five-match Test series in England and finished as the highest wicket-taker with 23 wickets, emerging as the most utilised bowler in the series. The 31-year-old from Hyderabad claimed nine wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the second innings of the fifth Test, playing a key role in India's six-run victory that helped the visitors level the series 2-2. Workload management will be crucial to prevent Siraj from getting injured in the future," Singh said in an interview with PTI-Bhasha. "Fast bowlers are at higher risk of injury when they play too many matches in a short time. His workload should be managed just like we did with Bumrah." Citing Jasprit Bumrah's example, Singh said: "It's because of better workload management, Bumrah bowled brilliantly in both ODI and T20 World Cups. "Siraj is also in the same league. To protect him from injuries, we need to seriously focus on his workload, sooner or later." Singh, who played 82 matches for India including 14 Tests, praised Siraj for his lion-hearted performance during the England tour. Siraj was the only bowler who played all five Tests and bowled with full energy and intensity in each match," said Singh, a JioHotstar' Cricket expert. "The last ball of the series, which bowled out the batsman, was one of his top five fastest deliveries in the series. Siraj delivered a 143 kmph yorker to clean up Gus Atkinson and seal India's win in the fifth Test. It was the fifth-fastest ball he bowled in the series. "This shows that he never lacked effort. He focused on bowling with the right line and length and contributed beyond expectations for the team. His fitness and rhythm were excellent throughout, Singh said. Having bowled largely under Bumrah's leadership until now, Siraj carved his own identity during the England series. Singh noted that even Bumrah's success has been supported by Siraj. "Just like batsmen need partnerships, bowlers also prefer bowling in pairs. Bumrah tends to take more wickets and his unique action troubles batters more," the former left-arm bowler said. "Siraj's role is to build pressure from his end, and he does that very well. Their partnership has been special and delivered great performances. When Bumrah is not in the team, Siraj automatically becomes our lead fast bowler." On the debate over Bumrah featuring in only three matches on the England tour due to workload management, Singh said: "That was already planned. The good thing about Bumrah is that whenever he's in the team, he gives you wickets. "Captains always expect breakthroughs from him. He usually bowls more than others in any match he plays." Singh also praised skipper Shubman Gill, who led from the front with 754 runs in the series. No one thought India would come back and level the series 2-2. Gill was impressive as captain. He made good decisions and his personal performance was outstanding. "When a captain performs well in his role, it positively influences his decision-making." The series also saw moments of grit as injured players had to bat to save matches. Rishabh Pant came out to bat in Manchester despite a fractured leg, while England's Chris Woakes batted with his left arm in a sling after suffering a shoulder fracture. Singh said in such situations, teams should be allowed like-for-like injury replacements. In my opinion, there should be a neutral doctor or physio during every match who decides the severity of a player's injury and whether the player is fit to play. If not, the team should be allowed to bring in a replacement of similar ability, he said. Kuldeep Yadav and Arshdeep Singh did not feature in any of the Tests, and Singh attributed this to the team management's preference for all-rounders. There's no doubt that every player wants to be in the playing XI. From the first match of the series, India decided to strengthen the batting. To deepen the batting lineup, the team preferred all-rounders. That's why Kuldeep didn't get to play," he said. If the team had prioritized bowling strength, then Kuldeep would have played. Washington Sundar partially filled the spin bowler role. But I believe there were two or three pitches where Kuldeep could have been very effective. But these things happen in cricket, if not today, then there will be opportunities in the future.
