NDTV05-05-2025

Travelling through Japan is a dream, from beautiful cities and rich traditions to some of the most iconic food in the world. But if you are a vegetarian, eating your way through the country is not always as easy as it sounds. Even a simple bowl of soup can have hidden meat-based stock, and it is not always clear what is safe to order. That is why Barkha Singh's food picks come in clutch. She just shared her favourite vegetarian-friendly spots across Osaka, Kyoto and Tokyo - and whether you are looking for a warm veg ramen or something sweet like chocolate gyoza, her list makes travelling meat-free in Japan feel way less stressful.
Vegetarian-Friendly Restaurants To Try In Osaka
Shin Gi Dai: Picture this - a casual setup, cold draft beer and tofu skewers that hit the spot. Barkha's pick for laid-back evenings.
Kiou Ramen: They serve a tomato-based vegetarian ramen. It looks veg, smells veg - but she still used Google Translate to double-check. Respect.
Katsu In Dotonbori: The spot that saves vegetarians from okonomiyaki FOMO. They customise it without meat or fish.
Barkha Singh's Top Picks For Vegetarian Food In Kyoto
Chao Chao Gyoza: The wait is long (like, over an hour), but the payoff? A full vegetarian and vegan menu. Barkha's highlight was the chocolate gyoza with homemade ice cream. Also: friendly staff, chill vibes.
Miyabi Ine Boathouse Cafe: A total aesthetic dream. Calm, beautiful and perfect for a slow meal.
Saryo Tesshin: This one's all about comfort. Order the soba noodles and thank Barkha later.
Where To Eat Vegetarian Food In Tokyo, According To Barkha Singh
Ramen Engine: A go-to for vegetarian ramen bowls and miso rice. But it fills up fast, so Barkha recommends heading there by 6 PM.
Coco Ichibanya: Your saviour for vegetarian Japanese curry with veggies. You get to pick your spice level. Barkha chose level 4, and it brought the heat.
Gonpachi: Yes, that Gonpachi. The Kill Bill one. They have a vegan menu and do custom tweaks, too. Bonus points for the whole vibe.
Omoide Yokocho, Shinjuku: A maze of stalls and signs that say "vegetarian-friendly". Just note - some grills are shared, so ask questions.

Also, Barkha could not stop raving about Nishiki Market - calling it the best spot for viral Japanese snacks like mochi, fluffy cheesecake, and custard-filled pancakes.
So, no, being vegetarian in Japan is not impossible. You just need the right list. And luckily, Barkha Singh has already made it.

5 Bollywood Movies That Will Awaken The Travel Bug In You

When was the last time you took a trip? While our friends on Instagram may be posting international trip pictures every week, some of us have even gotten unaffected by those, and do not remember the last time we booked a train or flight ticket. If you are in the same boat (and not hopping on a real boat), you need a little inspiration to hit pause on that routine, pack a suitcase and just go on that trip. Vacations are often seen as a luxury but mean so much more than that. A single trip has the power to change your life completely. Don't believe us? Well, if you believe in the magic of storytelling, here are five beautiful, fun and heartwarming travel-inspired Bollywood movies that just might awaken that travel bug inside of you. Here Are 5 Travel-Based Movies You Should Watch To Get Inspired: 1. Swades (2004) This is your sign to watch 'Swades' if you have not already seen this wonderful movie. The Shah Rukh Khan-starrer film is considered to be one of his finest by fans and critics, and yet an underrated film often forgotten, since it is devoid of stereotypical Bollywood masala. The travel aspect in this film is also unique - the protagonist, Mohan, is a modern man, an NRI working at the technological forefront of NASA in the US. The film explores his journey back home, to the villages of India, and an internal journey that completely changes his perspective towards life and one's own country. 2. Jab We Met (2007) View this post on Instagram A post shared by Shamira Fanclub 👩‍❤️‍💋‍👩 (@shahidmirafb) One of the most fun Imtiaz Ali movies, 'Jab We Met' revolves around Geet (Kareena Kapoor) and Aditya (Shahid Kapoor), where a missed train brings them together on a long and adventurous journey to Geet's home. The story captures how spontaneous travel and meeting new people can completely transform your life, and sometimes, also bring love. 3. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011) 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' is a through-and-through travel-based film, with every intention to encourage you to plan a trip with your closest friends, face your fears, laugh out loud, and even shed a tear or two. The film stars Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol, Katrina Kaif and Kalki Koechlin in key roles. It's one of the films fans love rewatching and continues to inspire every single time to hit the play button. 4. Queen (2013) Another travel-based Bollywood film we love is 'Queen', helmed by Vikas Bahl. The film follows the journey of Rani (Kangana Ranaut), a simple girl from Delhi's Rajouri Garden, whose fiance (Rajkummar Rao) breaks up just a few days before their marriage. Heartbroken, Rani decides to go on her honeymoon all by herself, and the trip to Paris and Amsterdam teaches her how to find her independence, courage, self-love and confidence. The film has unconventional characters you will fall in love with, and it will leave you with an urge to go on a solo trip and find yourself. 5. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013) View this post on Instagram A post shared by yeh jawani hai diwani (@yeh_jawaniii_hai_deewani_) One of the most popular Bollywood films among the youth, 'Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani' shows how "topper" Naina's (Deepika Padukone) attitude towards life changes when she takes a leap of courage and goes on a trip to Manali with a bunch of strangers she only knows by name. On this trip, Naina learns how to enjoy life and not take things too seriously - a lesson we all need from time to time. She creates lasting friendships and even finds the love of her life - Bunny (Ranbir Kapoor). On the flip side, the film also explores Bunny's love for freedom and travel, as he takes a job with a travel show and lives his life to the fullest - living in new countries, meeting new people, and exploring new cuisines. The film will make you fall in love with travel, and also help you draw a line to not use it as an excuse to escape life and things that mean the most to us. Watch these fun and beautiful Bollywood movies and after that, maybe call your friends to plan that trip you always wanted to.

Bungee Jumping Instructor's Words Help Tourist Take The Leap, Video Gets 38 Million Views

Bungee jumping in Rishikesh is a popular bucket-list experience for adventure seekers. Recently, a video going viral on Instagram highlights the often overlooked moments behind the adrenaline - patience, trust and empathy. A video capturing a Himalayan Bungee Jumping staff member gently coaching a visibly nervous tourist has been grabbing attention for all the right reasons. The young woman, standing at the edge of the platform, repeatedly asks for a minute to gather courage, only to be met with calm, reassuring words that ultimately helped her take the leap. The clip shows the girl hesitating as she prepares for her jump, clearly overwhelmed by the height and intensity of the moment. In response, the staff member is heard patiently guiding her through every step, saying, 'Okay, without looking down, just look up and walk. Today is going to be the best part of your life. Let's go, ma'am.' As she continues to stall, requesting more time, he gently tells her, 'One minute does not help you, ma'am. One minute is not going to help you. Let's go.' His tone remains firm yet kind throughout the exchange. He reminds her repeatedly that she is safe, saying, 'You are 200% safe here. Everyone is afraid. You are a part of it. But you have to prove yourself.' At one point, when the woman tells him she fears she won't be able to breathe mid-jump, he calmly replies, 'Nothing like that will happen. This is all overthinking. You are using your brain here. You don't have to use your brain here. Listen to your heart today.' Eventually, she agrees to proceed. Holding her harness tightly, the staff member counts down, 'Alright, 3, 2, 1, nice,' and the tourist jumps - overcoming her fear in front of the cheering crew. The viral video has clocked 38 million views on Instagram. Another noted, 'My respect for adventure sport staff just doubled. It's not easy standing at that edge with someone panicking.' A few were even more emotional, with comments like 'Goosebumps. His line 'One minute won't help you' hit hard,' and 'He didn't just help her jump, he helped her believe.' One summed it up best: 'More than a thrill, this was therapy.'
