
WhatsApp breaks co-founder's promise of ‘no ads'
Meta has unveiled plans to introduce adverts on WhatsApp, breaking a promise by the messaging app's co-founder never to do so.
In a major update announced on Monday, WhatsApp said it will roll out paid advertising to its 3bn monthly users over the next few months.
The move is in direct violation of the 'no ads, no games, no gimmicks' pledge made by Meta following its $19bn (£14bn) acquisition of WhatsApp in 2014.
Jan Koum, WhatsApp's co-founder and chief executive at the time, had the mantra written on a note taped to his desk.
In a 2012 blog post entitled 'Why we don't sell ads', he wrote: 'Remember, when advertising is involved you the user are the product.'
The decision to abandon this promise risks fuelling concerns that the app is becoming more of a social media platform instead of a messaging service.
It also comes after Meta began rolling out its own artificial intelligence (AI) function within WhatsApp, allowing users to interact with a chatbot similar to ChatGPT.
Meta AI also offers AI-powered search suggestions.

WASHINGTON, June 16 (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate tax committee proposed a full phase-out of solar and wind energy tax credits by 2028, but extended the incentive to 2036 for Trump administration-favored hydropower, nuclear and geothermal energy, according to a draft bill circulated on Monday. The draft released by the committee chair, Republican Senator Mike Crapo, would begin phasing out tax credits enshrined by the Biden-era 2022 Inflation Reduction Act for solar and wind energy in 2026 by reducing the incentive to 60% of the credit's value and ending it by 2028. It would grant hydropower, nuclear and geothermal facilities 100% of the credit until 2033, and then phase it out to zero by 2036, according to the draft.

Senate Republican bill would end $7,500 EV tax credit 180 days after approval
WASHINGTON, June 16 (Reuters) - Senate Republicans on Monday proposed a tax and budget bill that would end the $7,500 tax credit on new electric vehicles 180 days after the measure is signed into law, and it would end a $4,000 used-vehicle EV tax credit 90 days after the bill's approval. The House of Representatives version would allow the $7,500 new-EV tax credit to continue through the end of 2025, and through the end of 2026 for automakers that have not yet sold 200,000 EVs. The Republican Senate Finance Committee bill would exempt interest paid on auto loans from taxes for new cars made in the United States.
