And it quickly became clear - very few people had any idea over the extent of what the convicted paedophile and rapist might be capable of.

The police can also place his mobile phone in the area of Praia da Luz on the night of May 3 when Madeleine vanished - the same village where Brueckner is convicted of raping a woman in 2005.

But it is forensic evidence that still needs to tie him to the case. And that is what these new searches endeavour to unearth.
Following a tip-off German federal agents are hopeful some DNA, a strand from Maddie's pyjamas or any other clue might have fallen into street works - or even been deliberately buried near the village.
Detectives are realistic, they know this is a longshot.
But with Christian Brueckner set to walk free on September 17 it is one they know they need to take.

He says: 'He was a guy who enjoyed his personal time. 'He loved his family. 'He did lots of lovely things. 'He clearly liked a drink. 'He loved a big cigar. 'But he had lots of time to bring up his son.' While it is understandable that Michael's army of fans want to hear from him again, they may have to make do with recalling his past glories. There were certainly more than enough of them for Flavio and others to remember.

The hour-long documentary tells the tale of how Ricky Dearman was accused of running the ring by his two children and their mother, Ella Draper. A documentary about the true story of how a pair of children falsely accused their father of being part of a Satan-worshipping paedophile ring has hit Netflix. Pic: Channel 4 Police interviews saw the children make shocking claims about their father along with some 175 teachers, parents, police and religious leaders — and their half-brother. The kids claimed that the cult raped children, killed babies and then wore their skulls while dancing around drinking their blood. Following a police search of the local school and church, it was found that the rooms in which the children said the babies had been killed did not exist. Shockingly, it was later revealed that the children were forced to make the claims by their mother, Ella, and her then partner Abraham Christie. Draper and Christie could not be prosecuted for the unfounded claims due to the psychological abuse of the children taking place in Morocco while they holidayed, the Guardian reports. WWII bombs defused in Cologne after thousands evacuated
Over 20,000 people were evacuated from central Cologne after three unexploded World War II bombs were found, the biggest such operation in the German city since the end of the war. Bomb squad technicians defused the three American explosives, two weighing 1,000kg and one weighing 500kg, having earlier set up an evacuation zone of about 10,000 square metres for 12 hours. Road and train lines closed and city officials went door to door, sending over 20,500 people out of their homes and closing 58 hotels as well as numerous restaurants and businesses. A hospital, two nursing homes, nine schools and a TV studio in the centre of the city were all evacuated. Local authorities said weddings had to be relocated from Cologne's townhall, and a man was taken into custody after trying to break through a barrier and enter the zone. The bombs had been found during building work on Monday in the Deutz area on the east bank of the River Rhine. German construction sites have regularly unearthed unexploded World War II ordnance. In Frankfurt, the discovery of a 1.4-tonne bomb in 2017 led to the removal of 65,000 people, the largest such evacuation in Europe since 1945. In 2021 four people were injured when a World War II bomb exploded at a building site near Munich's main railway station, scattering debris over hundreds of metres.
