Cowboys' 'Electric' Rookie Gets Pro Bowler Comparison In Oxnard originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
It has been some training camp for Dallas Cowboys running back Jaydon Blue as the former Texas Longhorn has been rewarded for stacking good days in practice with first-team reps.
Seen as a lightning bolt out of the backfield, Blue as a runner and receiver is devastating, and through the first week of camp, Jaydon has been making play after play to the point where he's looking settled working with the starting offense.
Yeah, we understand that it's only training camp, but Blue is doing everything expected of him, and to the extent that head coach Brian Schottenheimer has given the rookie a rather nice comparison to a three-time Pro Bowler, and a member of the Hall of Fame All-2010 Team.
"Jaydon, he's picked up the confidence and the understanding of what we're trying to do and the understanding of the preparation,' Schottenheimer said. "When guys do that, you reward them. The quickness and the ability to accelerate in the hole, it's just different.
"He's got incredible lateral agility, quickness, and when he jump cuts or moves laterally, he's able to get to top speed in a hurry, and he doesn't need a lot of space. He reminds me of the quickness and acceleration of Darren Sproles. Darren was freaky with his quickness, acceleration, and speed. I think Jaydon has some of those traits in terms of he's electric when he gets the ball.'
That is quite the comparison, with Sproles having played 14 years in the NFL and being known for his speed and agility to make defenders miss, plus his ability as a receiver, it is clear Schotty sees something similar in Blue.
So that is something to aim for, but Blue must now continue to stack good days in Oxnard, because there are chances on Schottenheimer's offense, if he's good enough and right now, he's making his head coach take notice.
There will be a role for Blue in 2025, but exactly what that is we don't know.
But one thing is for certain, he might be too electric to not have on the field.

Cowboys Training Camp: Takeaways from Practice 14, Oxnard is Over, update on Diggs injury

The Dallas Cowboys have concluded their final West Coast practice of the 2025 calendar, and they are set to pack up and return to Texas in advance of their second preseason game. The Baltimore Ravens will meet them in Arlington for a Saturday night matchup, but aside from a walkthrough and some media availability on Thursday, it's a wrap on yet another four-week stint on Oxnard, CA. Wednesday's practice was highlighted by a sensational interception by a defensive lineman, giving some hints as far as what can be expected once the games count, as the Cowboys' new coaching staff continues to commit to the hide-and-no-seek mantra when it comes to what they'll reveal during the exhibition season. Here are the biggest takeaways from the final training camp practice of 2025. Sam Williams' Pick-6 Late in practice, working on goal-line situations, Dak Prescott was intercepted by defensive end Sam Williams. Williams returned the interception the entire length of the field for a Practice Pick-6. That's Dante Fowler (13) lined up wide of right tackle Terence Steele. Rookie DE Donovan Ezeiruaku (41) is standing up in the C gap and DT Solomon Thomas in the A gap. On the OL's left side, that's Mazi Smith (58) and Marshawn Kneeland (94) taking on the LG and LT, with Kenneth Murray (59) and finally Williams (54). Running Back Depth Chart According to Dallas News' Calvin Watkins, the running back pecking order seems to be settling in. Vaughn got first-team reps again. But as camp is on the cusp of closing, it seems Javonte Williams has the lead as the Week 1 starter at running back. The backup is between Hunter Luepke, Jaydon Blue and Miles Sanders. Injury Updates LT Tyler Guyton (broken knee) began working on the resistance cords on Wednesday, per ESPN's Todd Archer RB Miles Sanders (knee) returned to team drills DE Payton Turner (ribs) returned to practice RB Jaydon Blue still isn't practicing with his knee/ankle issue Trevon Diggs has ramped up to daily sessions with trainer Britt Brown, also doing ball drills Steal of the draft? The Cowboys double-dipped at running back in the spring, taking two on Day 3 in fifth-round pick Jaydon Blue and seventh-round pick Phil Mafah. Mickey Spagnola had an interesting tidbit on Wednesday that may help explain how a battering ram like Mafah fell that far despite having back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons at Clemson. In an extremely deep running back class, Mafah played his final year in college with a torn labrum, and wasn't able to work out for teams in the pre-draft process. There's an assumption the Cowboys are going to carry both veteran RBs they signed this summer, but that may not be the case. MIcah Check Still no update on renewed contract talks between Jerry Jones and Micah Parsons, both who brushed off questions about progress or trade talk. NFL Quarterback Tiers 2025: Experts vote on Prescott

Dak Prescott has always been a difficult quarterback to rank. There are times when he plays like someone who belongs in the top six to eight and is in the MVP race, and then there are other instances, like last season, when he wasn't worthy of a top-10 spot. The harshest of critics usually have him in the 12 to 16 range, which is around a Tier 3 QB. But, when healthy, his overall body of work entering Year 10 probably puts him in Tier 2, somewhere between six and 10. Advertisement Prescott was asked recently if QB rankings motivate him. 'Motivated? That's temporary,' he responded. 'I don't think I've really ever cared about a list. I was, what, the ninth or so guy taken when I was (drafted)? The list changes every person you ask. The list changes every year. With injuries, obviously, the list should change. As young new players come in, the list is going to change, so not something I really ever give weight to. 'I know who I am. I'm confident in who I am. It's about me just continuing to get better, healthy, and grow, and make sure I'm the best player, quarterback and leader I can be for this team. That's the list I care about.' In Mike Sando's annual 'QB Tiers' rankings, Prescott ranks on the back end of Tier 2 at No. 12 Dak Prescott Cowboys 'I'm not necessarily worried about anything when I play him, but he's just solid,' one defensive coordinator told Sando. 'I think he is still good. I started to 2 slash 3 him, but I think he is a 2.' Another defensive coach was not as positive. 'He has proven when it comes to the big games, he can't win,' the coach said. 'I've had him as a 2 before, but over the years, it is the same thing over and over again.' Prescott's health is going to be the biggest factor going forward. He recently turned 32 and is set up to have excellent weapons on the perimeter with CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, Jake Ferguson, Jalen Tolbert and KaVontae Turpin. But will he be available for a full season? After not missing a start during his first four years as the Cowboys franchise QB, things changed during the 2020 season when he suffered a gruesome compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle. He played in only five games that season. While he bounced back the following year, he's missed notable time every other year. The trend sets him up to have a bounce-back year this season. It'll be interesting to see how things unfold as he works with a new offensive play caller in new Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer. Prescott's previous play callers have been Scott Linehan (2016-2018), Kellen Moore (2019-2022) and Mike McCarthy (2023-2024). Prescott's $60 million average annual salary is tops in NFL history. No other player makes more than $55 million per season. Prescott benefited from having excellent representation, great contract leverage and extreme confidence to bet on himself. There's no question that his contract and being the quarterback of the Cowboys have made the spotlight brighter. Advertisement Like with Tony Romo before him, when Prescott has been on the field, the basement is very high. Dallas has never had a losing record when Prescott plays at least nine games in a season. He's also been the QB during three 12-win seasons and one 13-win season. But the playoff win total is only two in seven games, with both victories coming in the wild-card round. Also similar to Romo, Prescott has always been good enough to keep the team from going in another direction. Jerry Jones and company could have chosen to move on a year or two ago and maybe be in a better spot today. But there's a greater chance that they'd be worse off, and possibly one of the teams that is constantly trying new options at quarterback and not coming close to what they had in Prescott. During The Athletic's recent survey of Cowboys fans, Prescott was voted the team's most underrated player (85 votes). He was also voted the team's most overrated player (339 votes). As long as he avoids a major injury, the expectation is that Prescott will remain Dallas' quarterback for at least the next four seasons. 'Obviously we have a lot of confidence that Dak's injury was one of those that was just unfortunate,' Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said in April on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas when asked about continuing to restructure his contract. 'We feel like he's gonna be a healthy, productive quarterback for us that will play at the very top of his game and give us a chance to win championships.' Spot the pattern.
