Kota Kinabalu: The 12th edition of the Sabah Oil, Gas & Energy Conference and Exhibition (SOGCE) 2025 expects some 4,000 visitors from both local and international markets, according to organising chairperson Dolly Jimayol. Not only from within Malaysia, but Brunei, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy, the United States, Libya, Ghana, Germany, South Korea, and China.
Advertisement 'This growing international presence demonstrates that SOGCE is gaining global recognition. It also reflects our state government's continued efforts to promote Sabah's oil and gas industry. 'For the past 12 years, our platform has played a key role in supporting this initiative — by bringing people together under one roof,' said Dolly, Thursday. She said the expanding database and wider outreach raised awareness of opportunities in Sabah, attracting more investors, collaborators and industry players. 'The increase in international interest is very encouraging. Compared to earlier editions, this growth aligns with global trends and movement in the oil and gas sector. A decade ago, not many understood Sabah's potential. Today, they do and they are coming,' she said. The event on July 3 and 4 at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) is themed 'Fostering Collaboration, Paving Sustainable Opportunities.' It is organised by Midas Events Management with partners Sabah Oil & Gas Development Corporation (SOGDC), Society of Petroleum Engineers – KL Section and Semarak Training. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor is scheduled to officiate. Running concurrently would be a two-day exhibition featuring 90 participating companies across more than 3,000 square metres of exhibition space. The exhibition will showcase the latest technologies, solutions, and innovations in the energy sector. Strong representation is expected from Sabah and Labuan (33 companies), alongside exhibitors from Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak, Thailand, Singapore, Canada, and China. 'This year, we continue to see an upward trend in participation, with a mix of returning exhibitors and first-time participants. 'The exhibition covers a broad range of services across the oil, gas, and energy spectrum—including engineering, safety equipment, logistics, drone technology, training, research and development, marine and subsea services, solar energy, and digital innovations. This variety reflects the evolving demands and capabilities of the industry,' she said. Dolly said new initiatives have been introduced such as the Youth Engagement Programmes in collaboration with the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Kuala Lumpur and Sabah Sections, a B2B meeting platform, Product & Service Presentations at the Knowledge Hub, Networking Cocktails, and the SOGCE Networking Golf Tournament—which also supports charitable causes like the Sabah Cheshire Home. Keynote speakers include Datuk Ir. Bacho Pilong, Senior Vice President of Petronas, Malaysia Petroleum Management; Connor Dunn, President of ConocoPhillips Malaysia; Datuk Annuar Ayub, Chairman of Sabah Energy Corporation; and Senator Datuk Seri Anifah Aman, Chairman of Invest Sabah Berhad. Other distinguished speakers will also participate in various panels throughout the event. 'SOGCE is more than just a business gathering — it is a vital catalyst for Sabah's economic growth. It plays a crucial role in building an informed, capable, and future-ready community within the energy sector,' said Dolly. She also encouraged participation from local OGSE (Oil and Gas Services and Equipment) companies, SMEs, youth, university and secondary school students, and the general public. 'The future of Sabah's energy industry lies in informed participation, skilled talent, and visionary leadership,' she added. SOGCE 2025 is proudly supported by its key sponsors, including Sabah Energy Corporation, Asian Supply Base, ConocoPhillips, Shell Malaysia, Velesto Energy, Amanah Raya Berhad, Yokogawa, PETRA Energy, Eternity Mode, SLB, SOGDC, Technip Energies, GAC Malaysia, and Deleum Berhad and many others. The organisers also extend appreciation to airline partners Malaysia Airlines and Firefly, as well as all supporting media, organisations, and hotel partners for their continued collaboration and trust. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Selangor disburses RM864,000 in second phase of rental aid for Putra Heights fire victims
SHAH ALAM, Aug 15 — The Selangor government has disbursed RM864,000 in the second phase of temporary rental assistance to 144 households affected by last year's gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya. State Housing and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Borhan Aman Shah said the payments, covering July to September 2025, were credited on Aug 6 through the Selangor Housing and Property Board (LPHS). He said recipient selection followed a data review conducted by the Petaling District Disaster Management Committee, Victim Data Subcommittee and local community representatives. 'The list was updated based on factors such as homes already repaired, former tenants who have relocated or those no longer needing assistance,' he said in a statement. Borhan added that the aid aims to ease the burden on affected families as they navigate relocation or home repairs, and urged remaining eligible victims to claim their assistance at the Petaling District and Land Office for further verification. In the first phase of the programme, covering April to June, a total of RM2.19 million was disbursed to 365 households. — Bernama

Federal government keeps Petronas, but states to see bigger share through new deals, says Azalina
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 — The ownership of Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) remains with the federal government, although steps were taken to enhance the participation of states through strategic collaboration platforms, joint project implementation, and involvement in the value chain, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. Azalina said the federal government's approach is aligned with an inclusive federal structure and ensures sustained benefits for all parties. The minister said that the federal government is currently the sole owner of Petronas, which is incorporated under the Companies Act 1965 as the national oil and gas company. 'The Petroleum Development Act 1974 (Act 144) entrusts Petronas with ownership of petroleum, along with the exclusive rights, powers, freedoms, and privileges to explore, manage, and develop the country's petroleum resources, whether onshore, offshore, or in Malaysian waters,' she said in a response posted on the Parliament's website today. Azalina was responding to Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan (GRS-Keningau), who asked whether the government could consider distributing 50 per cent shares in Petronas to oil- and gas-producing territories and states, namely Sarawak, Sabah, Terengganu, and Kelantan. According to Jeffrey, the distribution is a fundamental step to strengthen the Malaysian Federation moving forward, while easing politicisation and dissatisfaction over oil and gas rights. Azalina said that although the ownership of Petronas is under the federal government, the current approach allows producing states to receive direct benefits from the petroleum industry through cash payments and various forms of commercial cooperation. 'At the same time, overall revenues from the sector are fairly distributed across the country in line with national development needs,' she added. — Bernama

Petroleum Development Act safeguards Petronas's role in Sarawak, says Azalina
Federal minister Azalina Othman Said said Petronas is vested with the ownership of petroleum, and the rights, powers, freedoms, and exclusive privileges to explore, exploit, obtain, and acquire petroleum, whether onshore or offshore. PETALING JAYA : Petronas's rights on oil and gas resources in Sarawak remain protected under the Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA), says law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said. In a written parliamentary reply, Azalina said the PDA would remain in force, in accordance with existing legal provisions. 'Petronas is vested with the ownership of petroleum, and the rights, powers, freedoms, and exclusive privileges to explore, exploit, obtain, and acquire petroleum, whether onshore or offshore Malaysia, as provided for under the Act,' she said yesterday. She was responding to Hassan Abdul Karim (PH-Pasir Gudang), who had asked about the extent to which the federal government would defend the PDA as a foundation of the country's economic sovereignty in the oil and gas industry. This is in light of claims by the Sarawak government and Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros), which he said challenged the position of Petronas under the Act, Bernama reported. To strengthen cooperation with the Bornean states, Azalina said Petronas had signed two key documents: a commercial collaboration agreement with the Sabah government and a commercial settlement agreement with the Sarawak government. The agreements outline the framework of commercial cooperation between Petronas and state-owned companies such as SMJ Energy and Sabah Energy Corporation in Sabah, and Petros in Sarawak, she said. 'The landscape of the oil and gas industry, as well as the policies of each state government, have resulted in different cooperation structures in terms of ownership, revenue, and profit distribution,' she said. She was answering a question from Isnaraissah Munirah Majlis (Warisan-Kota Belud), who had asked about the differences in terms of ownership, revenue, and profit distribution between Petronas, SMJ Energy and Petros respectively, and the agreements between the parties. She said key factors influencing the differences in cooperation structure included the level of equity participation by SMJ Energy and Petros in upstream and downstream sector projects, as well as the strategic cooperation structures formed with the respective entities. She said although Petronas's cooperation with Sabah and Sarawak was based on the principles of inclusiveness and shared values, the implementation and outcomes might vary depending on the oil and gas industry landscape.
