Uppies and Downies leads to change of venue for county cup final
The county senior cup showpiece between Penrith and Carlisle City was due to be staged at the Reds' ground later this month.
But the Cumberland Football Association are now seeking a new venue for the 2025 final after receiving police advice and conducting a risk assessment.
The final was due to be held in Workington on the evening of Tuesday, April 22.
That, though, is also the date for the second of the three-game series in the historic Uppies and Downies mass ball game which takes place in the west Cumbrian town every Easter.
The Cumberland FA said that, after announcing the scheduled final, they were contacted by Workington Reds, who highlighted the clash with Uppies and Downies.

The county FA said that, following this, "we conducted a risk assessment in line with our health and safety processes.
"We have also liaised with Cumbria Police, who have advised that we will be unable to host the final at Borough Park on the evening of Tuesday, April 22 due to various reasons, as a result of the clash with Uppies and Downies.
"Because of this, we are working with both Penrith AFC and Carlisle City to find an alternative solution, with a further update to be issued in due course."
Workington Reds hosted last year's final though the majority of finals in recent times have been staged at Carlisle United's Brunton Park.

Mexico City Officially off NASCAR's 2026 Schedule, but Replacement Rumor Emerges
A new report claims NASCAR won't return to Mexico City in 2026. However, a replacement location is already under serious consideration. 'NASCAR's premier Cup Series will not return to Mexico City next year,' according to sources that spoke with Jordan Bianchi of The Athletic. Last month, the top racing league in the United States headed south of the border for its first international points event since 1958. Despite mixed reviews for the event from drivers, teams, and fans, NASCAR was still very interested in returning to Mexico's capital next year. However, the 2026 World Cup has forced the city off the schedule for 2026. Five matches in the FIFA Men's World Cup soccer tournament are scheduled from June 11 to July 5 in Mexico City. The racing insider claims the two sides looked at potentially doing a race in the spring, closer to Easter. And even contemplated the idea of a NASCAR-IndyCar doubleheader that weekend. However, the league and city officials could not agree on dates. NASCAR finalizing Chicagoland return in 2026? So what will NASCAR do to fill that race on next year's schedule? Trafford completes record move to Man City - and mentions News & Star!
Cumbrian goalkeeper James Trafford completed his record move back to Manchester City - and mentioned the News & Star in the process! The 22-year-old star has rejoined City from Burnley in a deal worth a reported £27m - a record fee for a British goalkeeper. And part of City's announcement of Trafford's move made reference to our meeting with the keeper at his family's farm in Greysouthen a decade ago. City's media team produced a photo of a 12-year-old Trafford pictured in City training kit and asked him to sign it. The goalkeeper (watch below) was quick to mention the source of the image as a News & Star photo, which was taken by photographer Tom Kay to accompany our interview with Trafford and his parents James and Alison when he first joined City from Carlisle United's academy in 2015. The goalkeeper also recalled that it was his dad's idea for him to pose for a photo on a Case tractor. "It's the only time it ever got washed," joked Trafford as he signed the photo. Trafford was with Man City from 2015 to 2023, and then joined Burnley. Now, after starring for the Clarets and helping them win promotion to the Premier League, he has returned to the Etihad Stadium two years later. Trafford, who has been named in recent England squads, has rejoined Man City from Burnley (Image: PA) Trafford, who has been in recent England senior squads, will now aim to further his top-flight and international ambitions at City, where he joins goalkeeping ranks that include Ederson, Stefan Ortega and Marcus Bettinelli. Speaking to City's official channels, Trafford said it was "brilliant" to be back at the club. "It was one of my goals since I joined when I was 12 - to play for Man City," he added. "I always believed that one day I'd be back and I've worked to achieve this moment, and now I've got to keep going." Trafford enjoyed a record-breaking season of clean sheets at Burnley last season as they won promotion from the Championship. Now he has signed a five-year deal at City in a move which is also believed to have a financial benefit to Carlisle United, through the terms of his departure from the Blues' youth set-up ten years ago in the Elite Player Performance Plan compensation structure. Trafford had been strongly linked with Newcastle United earlier in the summer but City had a buy-back clause for Trafford and also matching rights, which allowed them to match any offer from another club - and they duly made their move. He added: "I'm excited to see everyone [at City] again and I can't wait to get to work with all the lads, and improve myself." City's Premier League season begins with a trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers on August 16.
