Teacher booked for ‘sodomising' student: Punjab child rights panel issues notice to Patiala SSP, seeks report by June 13
The commission said that they had taken a suo-motu cognisance of the matter and directed Patiala SSP to thoroughly investigate the case and file an action-taken report in the matter before the commission by June 13.
The commission in its notice to SSP Patiala has stated that the commission is empowered to conduct a suo motu inquiry under Section 13 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, whenever there were violations of child rights.
'This is a serious issue. We will ensure that the police conduct a fair and speedy investigation into the case. Though the accused is a decorated teacher, we will ensure the rule of law prevails,' said Kanwardeep Singh, chairman, Punjab State Commission for Protection of Child Rights.
When asked about the boy being threatened in the court by an unidentified individual, the chairman said that they would ensure the safety of the victim.
'We will take care of the safety of the victim. Besides, we will look after his mental health also,' said Singh.
The accused teacher is a physical education teacher at Government High School and was booked under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) Act and 351 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Meanwhile, Patiala police said raids were being conducted to nab the accused. The Punjab education department on Monday suspended the accused teacher.

Last Updated: Jhansi (UP), Aug 9 (PTI) Police have arrested a man for allegedly killing a retired Additional District Government Counsel (ADGC), citing resentment over the lawyer's handling of his criminal case, officials said on Saturday. City Superintendent of Police Gyanendra Kumar Singh said that on the morning of August 5, 62-year-old Bhanu Prakash Sarwaria, a resident of Talpura under Nawabad police station, was murdered at his home by an unidentified assailant. The victim's son-in-law, Sachin Verma, a resident of Awas Vikas, lodged a case under section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), he said. 'During the investigation, police learned that Sarwaria also lent money at interest. He recently had a dispute with his neighbour, Sachin Verma, 26, son of Prem Kumar Dashariya, over such dealings. On being detained, Sachin confessed to the killing," Singh said. Police said that in 2001, Sachin had been jailed in a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act for kidnapping and sexually assaulting his girlfriend. Sarwaria was representing him in the matter, but Sachin believed the lawyer was neglecting his case. Last year, due to alleged lapses in representation, a warrant was issued against Sachin, resulting in three months' imprisonment, police added. Sachin also owed Sarwaria Rs 60,000, and the lawyer had seized his motorcycle over the unpaid debt. Fearing conviction in the next hearing scheduled for September 19, Sachin allegedly entered Sarwaria's home through the roof on August 5 and strangled him, police said. 'On Friday evening, police arrested Sachin Verma near Kanpur Road Chungi and sent him to jail," Singh said. Saini, a resident of Haridwar, has a number of criminal cases against him—apart from the latest one under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act—including harassment and dowry, Haridwar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Pramendra Dobhal said Friday. ThePrint had last month reported on the launch of Operation Kalanemi by the Uttarakhand Police on Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami's directions. At least 150 arrests have been under the operation so far. Operation Kalanemi was initiated following intelligence reports about the use of false identities and disguises near religious sites during Operation Sindoor. New Delhi: The Haridwar district police Thursday arrested a man accused of abducting and sexually assaulting a minor girl, after he was detained under Operation Kalanemi, an ongoing statewide crackdown on fake sadhus and saints. The accused, identified as Deepak Kumar Saini (40), had allegedly been moving around the district disguised as a 'baba' wearing a tiger skin loincloth, giving people 'blessings of Lord Shiva to fulfil their wishes'. Local police units first spotted Saini in the Chandi Ghat area of the holy city, and his subsequent movement raised suspicion, SSP Dobhal said in a statement. When police asked Saini about his whereabouts, he revealed his identity and residential address. While nothing alarming came out initially, a detailed verification of his background revealed the list of criminal cases registered against him. After further interrogation, Saini was taken into custody by the Haridwar police. 'Tale of Facebook accounts & sexual assault of minor' After Jwalapur police station personnel had apprehended Saini, they were informed by the Shyampur police station in the same district that he had been on their radar for nearly a week in a case of sexual assault of a minor. Police said Saini had been dressing up as a 'baba' to dupe people. 'He used to run two Facebook accounts in the name of Daksheshwar and Balaji Dham. He has been married thrice and has been accused of torture and harassment in marriage on several occasions,' said a Haridwar district police officer. The POCSO case against him was registered last Saturday when a parent approached the Shyampur police station alleging their minor daughter was made to consume some intoxicating substance and then sexually abused. According to an Uttarakhand police officer, who did not wish to be named, Saini was returning from the Chandi Devi temple in Haridwar on 22 July when he spotted a family, including a minor girl. 'The family complained that he said the girl had extraordinary powers and that she could achieve everything in the world. She was made to eat something, and as she began to lose consciousness, he offered his car to help her commute before her parents could make their way on foot,' a police officer told ThePrint. Saini then allegedly took the minor to a jungle on the way down from the temple and sexually assaulted her. 'The girl never complained about the incident to her parents due to a warning by Saini, but eventually had to reveal it as she developed pain in her stomach. An FIR was registered Saturday,' another police officer said. Coincidentally, on the same day the minor was allegedly assaulted, Saini and his family members had also allegedly assaulted his wife, who had filed multiple police complaints of assault and threat to her and her minor daughter's life. Saini and his family members had been booked under charges of rioting, criminal intimidation, and intent to provoke breach of peace, among others. Karnataka dalit group demands action in Dharmasthala attack on YouTubers
MANGALURU: The Karnataka Dalit Horata Samithi condemned the attack on YouTubers and a reporter from a private Kannada news channel in Dharmasthala recently. Samithi district leader S.P. Anand told reporters on Saturday that while the Dakshina Kannada police arrested one person in connection with the incident, around 50–60 individuals were involved in the attack. 'All those responsible must be arrested and booked under stringent laws,' he demanded. Anand pointed out that one of the injured, cameraman Abhishek , belongs to the Dalit community. 'The FIR should also include provisions of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, along with sections related to robbery,' he said. The Samithi plans to petition the DK Superintendent of Police and the home minister on the matter. According to Anand, the miscreants alleged that false propaganda was being spread on social media about Dharmasthala's sacred place. 'We too respect Dharmasthala and are not against it. We only want the police to identify those who orchestrated the attacks,' he said. He welcomed the Special Investigation Team's probe into the alleged mass burial case in Dharmasthala and urged it to bring out the truth. 'It is an attack on the democratic process, which is aimed at uncovering the truth,' he said. Samithi leader Anil Kumar alleged that the assault was a deliberate conspiracy to suppress facts.
