Temu doubles Australian advertising spend in response to US tariffs
The change in marketing strategy has caused fears that a new deluge of unsafe products will flood into Australia.
Hannah Jacobs-Herd's nine-year-old daughter Daniella sustained severe burns in July last year, after a hoodie purchased on Temu, a Chinese e-commerce company that ships goods directly to buyers from third-party sellers, caught alight.
Daniella received severe burns to 13 per cent of her body, including her face, after sparks from a fire pit hit the hoodie and it immediately went up in flames.
Ms Jacobs-Herd said after the trauma suffered by her daughter, it was distressing to see a deluge of Temu advertising pop up when she played free games on her tablet computer.
Ms Jacobs-Herd said she braced for more advertising from the platform when she heard about Mr Trump's "Liberation Day" tariffs targeting China.
"I lost it because I knew that we were going to get bombarded," she said.
In April this year, Mr Trump signed an executive order restoring an import charge for Chinese goods valued at or under $US800 ($1,224).
The move doubled the cost of goods bought through Temu by American consumers, driving the company away from the US to more favourable markets, including Europe and Australia.
Goods worth less than $1,000 can generally be imported into Australia free of duties, taxes or charges, meaning retailers do not need to absorb import fees or pass them on to Australian consumers.
Sharing data exclusively with the ABC, US market intelligence firm Sensor Tower said Temu had more than doubled its monthly Australian advertising spend from April to June 2025, compared with March.
Since Temu's 110 per cent increase in advertising spend, the platform's monthly users have increased by 50 per cent for the June quarter.
Shein, another Chinese marketplace app, increased its monthly Australian advertising spend by 160 per cent, for a 15 per cent increase in monthly users.
Sensor Tower estimated Temu spent more than $4 million on Australian advertising in January alone, primarily through Facebook and Instagram.
Taylor Brydges, a research principal at the University of Technology Sydney's Institute for Sustainable Futures, said the Sensor Tower data was representative of Temu's shift away from the US.
Temu did not directly respond to questions from the ABC about its increased advertising spend in Australia.
A spokesperson said the company opened the platform to Australian suppliers in March this year to better support them to cater for the local market.
Daniella's mother said she was worried more Temu customers would be harmed because of Australia's weak consumer protection laws.
"There should be more enforcement around it," Ms Jacobs-Herd said.
It is a sentiment echoed by consumer protection advocates.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) recently released a report on its five-year inquiry into digital platforms.
The report found Temu had rapidly become Australia's most-used retail marketplace app since launching in the country in March 2023.
It noted that, unlike Australia, regions including the European Union, Canada and the US had responded to the growing popularity of online retail platforms like Temu by prohibiting the sale of unsafe goods.
Consumer advocacy group Choice has been calling for a similar general safety provision since 2020.
Choice deputy director of campaigns Andy Kelly said recent research by the group showed 74 per cent of consumers mistakenly believed businesses were legally required to ensure products were safe before selling them in Australia.
In a statement, Assistant Minister for Competition, Charities and Treasury Andrew Leigh said the government was considering the findings of the ACCC's report, including the recommendation for a proactive general safety provision.
"No business should gain a competitive advantage by compromising on safety. Australian consumers deserve to know that online marketplaces value their safety and have taken steps to ensure their products are safe to use," he said.
In the meantime, Ms Jacobs-Herd said she worried other families would suffer harm after seeking a bargain.
"We're just pretty much like any person who want to buy their child an Oodie but they can't afford it, so they find a knock-off — lots of people do that," she said.
Four months after Daniella was burned, Temu issued a voluntary recall notice for the hoodie in consultation with the ACCC.
Ms Jacobs-Herd, who lives three hours north of Brisbane in Hervey Bay, is currently engaged in a lawsuit with Temu over the incident.
A Temu spokesperson told the ABC the company had banned the merchant involved from selling "children-related products" on its platform globally.
The spokesperson said as a third-party marketplace, Temu required all merchants to fully comply with local laws and standards.
"We have in place a quality assurance system that includes vetting sellers and product listings, physical spot checks … monitoring using technology and human reviewers, and swift enforcement action," they said.
"We are also in discussions with the ACCC about becoming a signatory to the Online Product Safety Pledge."

Shire of Coolgardie defies WA local government minister over proposed merger
A debt-laden outback council has threatened legal action to hold off a would-be merger with its larger neighbour. Local Government Minister Hannah Beazley rose in state parliament in June to slam "gross mismanagement" at the Shire of Coolgardie, which she described as a "financial mess" amid concerns about its ongoing viability. Council documents show the the shire owed creditors $2.8 million at June 30, while carrying debt of $27.5 million with just $2.9 million cash in the bank. Ms Beazley proposed a "boundary adjustment" with the neighbouring City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, but has since been inundated with letters from ratepayers in both communities opposed to the merger. Coolgardie councillors on Monday endorsed a position paper detailing its fight to maintain its independence. The shire said it would "explore its legal position" should Ms Beazley force an amalgamation. Shire president Malcolm Cullen said the council wanted to work with the Department of Local Government over the next 12 months while trying to achieve financial and organisational stability. Mr Cullen and Kalgoorlie-Boulder Mayor Glenn Wilson were due to fly to Perth on Tuesday morning for another meeting with the minister after she told both councils to reach a joint position at a meeting last month. "The position that we will be taking to the meeting is basically to provide the shire more time to look at enacting a financial recovery plan that will return the shire to financial stability and also organisational stability for the future," Mr Cullen said. "Certainly, just request that there be a bit a little bit of breathing space so that both the Shire of Coolgardie and the city can work through a number of issues that have been identified in discussions so far." City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder councillors discussed the proposed boundary adjustment behind closed doors at Monday night's ordinary council meeting, where the council also endorsed its 2025-26 Budget. Mayor Glenn Wilson said a boundary adjustment was a legislative process which was different to an amalgamation or merger. He said the Shire of Coolgardie would be dissolved if the action went ahead. He said the council had been asked by the minister's office to keep its formal position confidential until after Tuesday's meeting. But Mr Wilson did concede there was little to be gained by taking on the Shire of Coolgardie's mountain of debt. "There has to be nothing that our residents pay for out of this … our residents and our community should not bear the brunt of others' debt," he said. The Shire of Coolgardie has already proposed the sale of a controversial workers' accommodation village in Kambalda, which was built in 2022 by the council to take advantage of the Goldfields' most recent mining boom. The 328-room Bluebush Village was last valued in March in the range of $16.4 million to $19.4 million. Occupancy rates were as low as 25 per cent earlier this year. The shire said it planned to advertise Bluebush Village for sale by public tender from next month, evaluate offers in November and make a final decision on a proposed transaction in January. Mr Cullen said early estimates suggested the sale would lower debt to manageable levels. "It's in the ballpark, it's a ballpark figure," he said. Residents of both the Shire of Coolgardie and City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder have voiced their opposition to the merger in letters to the minister's office. Kambalda real estate agent Cheryl Davis requested the minister delay a decision until the shire's financial situation was properly assessed. She said the shire was making positive strides in operational improvement and renewed community engagement. "These early signs of progress are encouraging, and we believe the shire should be given a fair opportunity to continue this momentum without the added pressure of structural changes at this time," Ms Davis said. Kalgoorlie business owner Greg Bowden told the minister it would be "unfair and impractical" to expect the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder to take on responsibility for another local government while dealing with "its own internal challenges". "The risk of further instability and long-term financial pressure on both communities is real if this is rushed," he said. Fellow Kalgoorlie business owner John Bruce was concerned an amalgamation would place an "unfair and unsustainable burden" on ratepayers and businesses in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. "Our city should not be expected to absorb the consequences of long-term mismanagement, nor take on liabilities and debt accumulated by another local government without adequate assessment and consultation." Coolgardie RSL sub-branch secretary Ann Meagher told the minister Coolgardie was "more than just a dot on the map". "We have weathered storms before, and while we acknowledge the current challenges faced by the shire, we truly believe there is still time and opportunity to turn things around," she wrote. The Parents and Citizen Association at Coolgardie Primary School also wrote to the minister with an urgent request to delay any boundary changes. "We are considering the children of Coolgardie and the impact amalgamating with Kalgoorlie will cause," Coolgardie P&C president Coriana Boothey said. "It is a major concern that as a small community and small school that we will be left behind and not receive the support we are in need of."

Inner city site with $150m tower proposal sells
A Docklands site with a permit for a $150m tower has sold although it remains unclear if the massive development will go ahead. Melbourne City Council greenlit the project that developer Claric Ninety-Nine proposed to replace existing buildings at 13-33 Hartley St in 2022. Plans for the 6714sq m address near the Westgate Freeway included 400 apartments, 4580sq of retail and office space, basement parking for 173 cars and 492 bikes, a pool and library, across 50 levels. Melbourne's biggest eyesore listed for sale by China's Wang Hua It was slated to stand at 164m tall and also have a public park and new road built. Commercial real estate Allard Shelton director Joseph Walton declined to comment on the sold price although the property was listed with circa-$20m price hopes. Mr Walton said that the Fishermans Bend precinct lot had attracted strong interest, mostly from developers and a couple of potential owner-occupiers. 'We had buyers locally, interstate and internationally all look at the site,' Mr Walton said. Out of multiple offers submitted for the listing, a local developer ended up being the successful buyer. Mr Walton said the purchaser planned to 'spend some time repositioning the project'. In 2022, a Melbourne City Council's officers' report stated that the proposed 50-storey tower was 'not considered to introduce unreasonable amenity impacts to the public realm or adjoining sites'. 'The proposed materials and design of the development are generally supported based on best-practice urban-design principles, subject to a facade strategy to further refine the design,' the report read. 'The proposal includes the provision of a large portion of the site to be set aside for a public park and a new road, responding appropriately to the future vision of Fishermans Bend.' The 480ha Fishermans Bend urban renewal project, stretching across the City of Melbourne and City of Port Phillip, is set to become home to approximately 80,000 residents by 2055. In 2012, the Victorian government rezoned part of the area from urban industrial land to mixed use land. Historically, the precinct was home to aircraft, aerospace engineering and car design and manufacturing companies. Latest state government plans for Fishermans Bend include parks, schools, roads and community facilities along with the aim of providing employment for up to 80,000 people within the next three decades.

AFL Media reporter Cal Twomey detailed further information behind the offers tabled with one set to rewrite the record books. 'It's hitting crunch time in the contract decision of Harley Reid at the West Coast Eagles,' Twomey told Footy Classified. 'He's had contract offers in front of him since April that have come from the Eagles. But in recent weeks, his management have sent counter offers to the Eagles – and a part of that we can detail tonight include a mammoth offer that would be a two-year extension, plus an extension on top of that of another nine years. So an 11-year arrangement. 'This is groundbreaking, really, in terms of what it would mean for West Coast Eagles and Harley Reid as one of the options. We've seen this in recent times with the contract of Miles Bergman, who signed a two-year deal and then has an understanding with Port Adelaide that he can sign an extra seven years beyond that.
