Madhya Pradesh Police asks trainees to recite Ramcharitmanas to cope with homesickness
The decision was reportedly taken after 300 recruits requested to be shifted to training centres closer to their home districts. Around 7,400 newly-appointed constables, sub-inspectors and deputy superintendents are undergoing training in the state, according to the Hindustan Times.
Raja Babu Singh, the additional director general of police (training), told The Indian Express that Ramcharitmanas, especially the episode involving deity Ram's 14-year exile, is expected to impart lessons in living away from home to the recruits.
'Lord Ram did not return to Ayodhya for 14 years,' Singh was quoted as saying by the newspaper. 'During that time, he learned to live in the forest, built an army and overcame hardship. If we want to teach our recruits lessons, they will have to be from our local culture, which they can relate to.'
On Tuesday, Singh directed district police superintendents overseeing training centres to immediately procure copies of the Ramcharitmanas and begin recitations, the Hindustan Times reported.
The trainees will be asked to recite at least two chapters each night, reported The Indian Express, quoting unidentified officials.
An unidentified police officer posted at a training institute said the sessions would not be mandatory for non-Hindu trainees, the Hindustan Times reported. 'The meaning of all the couplets will be explained in Hindi so that everyone can take life lessons from them,' the officer was quoted as saying.
The Congress has criticised the move, stating that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led state government and its officials have a habit of 'mixing religion with everything'.
'Instead of making these trainees secular, who can respect and treat people of all religions alike, they are giving extra importance to one religion,' the Hindustan Times quoted party leader KK Mishra as saying.
However, BJP Spokesperson Hitesh Bajpai defended the initiative and said that 'trainees are being prepared to get ready for every kind of challenge and Lord Ram is the best example of surviving in the forest while fighting against demons'.

1 2 Kendrapada: Over the past five years, 34,538 weavers and 16,210 artisans in Odisha have benefited from various govt schemes, according to Giriraj Singh , the minister of textiles. Across the country, 644,985 weavers and 510,320 artisans have received similar support during the same period, Singh announced in the Lok Sabha on Friday. The ministry of textiles implements several programmes, including the National Handloom Development Programme and the Comprehensive Handicrafts Cluster Development Scheme, to provide financial assistance for raw materials, looms, design innovation, and marketing. Also, the ministry offers 100% subsidies for work shed construction under the National Handloom Development Programme for BPL, SC, ST, women, transgender, and differently-abled weavers. These initiatives aim to sustain and enhance the livelihoods of weavers and artisans, with special incentives for ST communities to bolster their businesses. The govt continues to release funds to eligible handloom agencies based on viable proposals, ensuring ongoing support for this vital sector.

Navi Mumbai: The ongoing language row in the state triggered tension in Vashi on Tuesday, when four students allegedly assaulted their 20-year-old classmate with a hockey stick outside ICLES' Motilal Jhunjhunwala College for sending a Marathi wedding invite on their WhatsApp group and insisting that they reply in the same language. Vashi police registered an FIR based on a complaint filed by the injured student, Suraj Pawar, against Faizan Naik and 3 others. Pawar, a BSc IT student, said as there was a wedding in the family, he sent an invitation on the WhatsApp group. When Naik replied in Hindi, Pawar asked him why he had not replied in Marathi. The jibes and digs on the chat group over using Marathi and Hindi soon escalated into an argument. On Tuesday morning, Naik and others allegedly thrashed Pawar and hit him with a hockey stick on the head outside the college building. The incident spiraled into a political controversy with MNS leader Gajanan Kale arriving at Vashi police station after the FIR was lodged. Kale told TOI: "A minor issue of a wedding invite written in Marathi has caused a serious fight among the college students. This should not have happened.
