Delay to opening Inverness Castle as £30m visitor attraction
Councillor Ian Brown, who is co-chairman of the Inverness Castle delivery group, said it was a landmark project for the Highlands.He said: "This is a complex project - it involves a unique blend of historic architecture, modern building techniques and innovative exhibits. "The teamwork between contractors, designers and fit-out specialists has been commendable, especially considering the challenges with workforce availability."Mr Brown added: "With construction drawing to a close, we are moving into the final phase with energy and clear focus."
What does the castle look like just now?
Once open, visitors will be able to take an interactive journey through the castle and learn about the history and legends of the Highlands.Younger people will be offered the chance to follow a virtual guide - a dog called Cuillin.The castle will also have a bar and bistro.Earlier this year, an information day was held on jobs being created at the castle.
The Scottish Courts and Tribunal Service moved out of the castle in 2020.The redevelopment has received funding from the £315m Inverness and Highland City Region Deal.In February, public agency Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) put an extra £863,000 towards the cost of the building's transformation.The additional funding brought HIE's total investment in the project to £2.86m.
The sandstone Inverness Castle was built in 1830s and 40s to plans drawn by architect William Burn.It was constructed on Castle Hill, which overlooks the city and the River Ness. The property's North Block served as a prison.
But a castle had occupied the site from possibly as far back as the 11th Century.Over the centuries, the fortification fell under the control of the forces of Edward I, Robert the Bruce and James I, II and IV.In 1562, it was attacked and damaged by soldiers loyal to Mary, Queen of Scots, before it was almost destroyed by Royalist troops in the 1600s.Bonnie Prince Charlie's forces blew the castle up in 1746 to prevent it from falling into the hands of government troops.It was said that a French sergeant, who had brought his poodle with him to Scotland, set off the explosives.The soldier was caught in the blast, and his body was blown across to the opposite side of the River Ness. His dog survived.

She was left in "awe" of the supermarket, and quickly started to ask questions about how things worked at the popular store. One thing she was particularly interested in was meal deals. After being told how the deal works by a member of staff, she admitted she was left spoilt for choice at what to pick - it seems as though she fell in love with meal dealsjust has quickly as Brits did though they have recently been shaken up. In the clip, Tals said: "This is insane. How does this not exist in the United States? I'm literally in awe. I would eat this every single day. "You can get a protein shake as part of the meal deal. Is this only in London? Is this in England? Where is this? Because this is crazy. "Don't judge me - I literally got some sort of dunk thing. I was too overwhelmed - I just picked the first thing I saw. How did I not find out about Tesco meal deals until today?" Warning: Below video may contain offensive language She admitted she felt like she "stepped into another world" after making the foodie discovery. As well as being "so cheap", she thought it was amazing that there was so much to choose from too. At the time she visited, the meal only set her back £4.00, which she thought was pretty great. While she admitted the sushi she picked up was "nothing special", she said it tasted fine and was actually "much better" than US supermarket offerings. Tals was so impressed by the idea of the humble meal deal that it actually caused her to "fall in love" with Tesco. Sometimes it's the littlest things that really do please people. The video has been viewed over 4,000 times since it was shared, and people were quick to comment too. They offered all sorts of different ideas. One said: "That's a little Tesco. Wait until you see a big Tesco." Another added: "You need to get a Clubcard and it will be cheaper." Someone else also chimed in with: "Not only Tesco do meal deals, and this is UK-wide, not just London. Love a meal deal." Tals is one of many Americans who document their travels online and report their findings. She left a few people chuckling with her tale about Tesco.

English seaside resort to make its beach even bigger – by doubling in size
A FOUR-mile long beach has revealed plans to double in size later this year. The stretch between the Pyramid Centre and the Coffee Cup café in Southsea will be extended with more than one million tonnes of shingle added to the beach. 5 5 The beach expansion is part of the Southsea Coastal Scheme, which is the UK's largest local coastal defence project. The local authority-led campaign will improve the seafront along 2.7 miles of Southsea's coastline, which includes adding sea defences in the form of extra shingle. By adding over one million tonnes, the larger beach will absorb more wave energy and protect the coastline. The plan is to top it up in the future if the shingle runs low. Work on this part of the project will begin in October 2025 and is set to be complete in March 2026. The Southsea Coastal Scheme, costing over £180million, first began in 2020. Some parts of the project are underway, and some are already complete. Work around the Long Curtain Moat is done which saw the demolition of a seawall and the building of a new one. Around the area, two new bridges were built, the promenade was made higher and wider, and there was new seating added too. Around Southsea Castle, rocks were imported to create new sea defences. UK beach named one of the top 100 in the world 5 5 Improvements were also made along the promenade between Pyramids and Speaker's Corner with new terraces, play areas and seating. There are still works underway at Southsea Common with further work to start in 2027 at Clarence Pier. The entire scheme is expected to be completed by 2029. Locals are happy with the work to their beach, one commented on Facebook: "Two weeks ago we walked from South parade pier along the new sea defence and wow it is fabulous what a difference." Another added: "All the work done so far is superb. This additional work will enhance both the sea defences and aesthetically improve the whole of the seafront." Project Executive Marc Bryan said: 'We've chosen to build a larger shingle beach in this area because they're great at absorbing wave energy which in turn helps reduce erosion and protects homes and businesses from coastal flooding. 'The new beach will adapt to rising seas and our changing climate while still providing the required standard of protection.
