J&K Police crack rape case of pregnant minor girl after 5 months, 3 arrested
After five months, Jammu and Kashmir Police have cracked the rape case of a mentally challenged 16-year-old girl who had become pregnant after the assault and arrested three persons in North Kashmir's Baramulla district.
Officials said that the Baramulla police achieved the critical breakthrough in the investigation of the POCSO case resulting in the identification and arrest of three accused persons while also DNA evidence identified the perpetrator who was responsible for the minor's assault leading to her pregnancy.
A police spokesperson said that they filed a case in January 2025 in Kunzer Police Station under relevant sections of the POCSO Act and BNS after the 16-year-old girl was found to be 25 weeks pregnant during a medical examination at sub-district hospital, Magam.
The investigation, led by then-SHO Kunzer Inspector Sheikh Adil, revealed the minor had been repeatedly assaulted by multiple perpetrators.
'Initial inquiries led to the arrest of Mohd Rafiq Bhat(resident of Dhobiwan), Mohd Nasarullah Khan (resident of Hayhama Lolab, Kupwara) who were arrested for rape, aggravated sexual assault, and kidnapping under POCSO provisions, though DNA analysis excluded both of them as the father of the foetus,' the spokesperson said.
The police said that investigators focused on Jawad Alam (resident of Champaran) who turned out to be the prime suspect.
'Forensic matching confirmed his DNA matched the foetus, establishing him as the biological father and confirming his role in the sexual assault leading to the pregnancy,' the official said.
The police investigations revealed that all the three accused had independently assaulted the victim on multiple occasions, with Alam responsible for the conception.
' Despite initial forensic complexities, the police team employed methodical investigation and advanced technology to identify all perpetrators. We reaffirm our zero-tolerance stance towards crimes against children and will ensure rigorous prosecution,' the official said.

Elderly man, wife found killed in duplex flat after 2 visitors leave; cops suspect gain for murder
Hyderabad: An elderly couple was murdered by two unidentified persons in their duplex apartment in Rajendranagar on Thursday. Police suspect it to be a case of murder for gain. According to the police, the deceased were identified as Shaik Abdullah (77), a retired bank employee, and his wife Rizwana (70), a retired polytechnic college lecturer. They were found dead with multiple stab injuries by the building's watchman on Friday. According to police officials, Abdullah had sustained seven stab injuries on his body, including the chest, abdomen, and leg. Based on the watchman's statement, the Rajendranagar police booked a case under Section 103 (murder) of BNS and launched a manhunt for the accused. "As per the watchman's statement, two people had come to visit the couple at around 5.10 pm on Thursday. They said they were physiotherapists. It was after taking permission from the house owner that the two were allowed inside. One of them was wearing a mask, and the other was dressed in burqa," said a police official. "Five minutes later, the person wearing the mask came out, and the other person left the house about 30 minutes later and came down from the sixth floor. " The couple had moved into the Rajendranagar residence about a month ago and were living alone. The police are yet to ascertain the extent of the loss. "The house, including the cupboard, was found ransacked. Since there was no third person, we cannot confirm whether any property was stolen. Only imitation ornaments were found at the site, and no gold was recovered. Until the culprits are caught, we cannot ascertain anything," said D Srinivas, assistant commissioner of police (Rajendranagar division), reiterating that they suspect it to be a murder for gain. The couple lived on the fifth and sixth floors of the building, while the remaining portions had been rented out. They have four children — two residing in the US and two in London. "The murder came to light at 11 am on Friday when the watchman went to the victims' house. Finding the fifth floor locked, he went to the sixth floor, where the lock was open. Frivolous applications: RPSC filed criminal cases against 14 candidates
1 2 Ajmer: The Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC) Friday said that it has filed a criminal complaint against 14 candidates between Nov 2024 and Jan 2025 for filing frivolous applications for the post of assistant professor in Sanskrit college education exam. The commission filed the complaints at the additional chief magistrate of Ajmer under Section 217 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Jaswant Garasiya of Banswara is a Bachelor of Arts (BA), but he filed an application for the assistant director (Science and IT department) exam 2024, even though the essential qualification for this exam was a first-class degree in natural and agricultural science or a first-class Master's degree in engineering or technology, or a first-class MSc or MTech with a graduate degree in science and engineering, along with two years of specialised experience in IT and science technology organisation. Garasiya also filed an application for assistant testing officer and junior chemist exam of the RPSC. RPSC secretary Ramniwas Mehta said, "I spoke to the candidate on phone regarding the filing of the application, and he admitted that he is a BA pass, but he could not answer why he filed such applications."
