The snow and ice accumulated in the Swiss Alps over the winter has already melted away, a monitoring service said on Friday, marking the second earliest arrival of a tipping point known as "glacier loss day".
All further melting between now and October will see the size of Switzerland's glaciers shrink, according to Glacier Monitoring in Switzerland (GLAMOS).
The tipping point is usually reached in August and its early arrival is another hammer blow for the Alpine nation's 1,400 glaciers, which have been shrinking at an alarming rate.
"Glacier Loss Day is reached in Switzerland," GLAMOS chief Matthias Huss wrote on X, explaining that winter snowfall had been low and June had been the second warmest on record.
"From now on all melt that occurs on glaciers until October is unsustainable," said Huss.
He pointed out that the only time on record that that the tipping point had arrived earlier had been "the record-shattering year 2022" when it came on June 26.
"Expect big ice loss due to the prolonged melt season," he said.
Glaciers in the Swiss Alps began to retreat about 170 years ago. The retreat was initially modest but in recent decades, melting has accelerated significantly.

Disney World on alert as Tropical Storm Erin threatens Florida, could become Hurricane soon; Know what's open and closed

Disney World is accustomed to the storm season due to its Central Florida location. Disney World had to close its parks, given the hazardous weather caused by hurricanes and tropical storms that hit Orlando in the past. As the storm is expected to intensify into a hurricane, it is likely to affect Florida and Disney World. Tropical Storm Erin and its impact on Disney World Tropical Storm Erin has developed in the Atlantic as of August 12, 2025, and is expected to intensify over the next few days. Erin was roughly 690 miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands, as per National Hurricane Center's alert issued at 5 am. The highest sustained speeds were close to 45 mph with stronger gusts. 'Gradual strengthening is forecast over the next several days, and Erin is expected to become a hurricane in the next couple of days,' the hurricane center stated in the advisory. According to the current projection, Erin may develop into a hurricane on Thursday, August 14. Forecast models presently predict a turn to the north, but it's unclear when and where that will happen. As a result, it is currently uncertain how much, if any, of an influence will be felt in Florida. Disney World keeps a careful eye on weather conditions and their potential effects on visitors and the parks. Disney usually shuts down its four major parks and halts transportation when storms are predicted. While some areas, including The Campsites at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort, might be evacuated, on-site resort hotels remain open. Outdoor attractions are frequently the first to close amid storm and heavy rains. This could lead to temporarily closure of Slinky Dog Dash, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, and Expedition Everest at Disney World. What we know about Disney World's hurricane cancellation and modification policy Disney does not charge cancellation or change fees for vacation packages or most room-only reservations if a hurricane advisory is issued by the National Hurricane Center for the Orlando area within a week of your planned arrival date. Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort and Disney's Vero Beach Resort are likewise covered under this policy if a hurricane warning is issued for those locations. Disney does not provide coverage for any travel or services provided by outside vendors.

Parts of Europe burn as millions are facing record heat

Synopsis Europe faces intense heat waves and wildfires. Spain, Portugal, and Turkey battle significant blazes, leading to evacuations. France issues a red alert for heat, while Greece deals with multiple fires and evacuations. Britain anticipates another heat wave. The events highlight the impact of climate change, with record temperatures exacerbating fire risks across the continent. (AP Photo/Giannis Androutsopoulos) Wildfires burned in parts of Europe on Tuesday as millions of people across the continent struggled to adapt to the new reality: record summer heat. Temperatures in some areas soared past 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit). Europe is warming faster than any other continent, at twice the speed of the global average since the 1980s, according to the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service. Last year was the hottest year on record in Europe and globally, the monitoring agency said. Scientists warn climate change is exacerbating the frequency and intensity of heat and dryness, making parts of Europe more vulnerable to wildfires. The burning of fuels like gasoline, oil and coal releases heat-trapping gasses that are the main driver of climate change. Spain and Portugal: Numerous wildfires Outside Madrid, firefighters had largely contained a blaze that broke out Monday night, authorities said. It killed a man who suffered burns on 98% of his body, emergency services said. Elsewhere, firefighters and nearly 1,000 soldiers were battling blazes in regions including Castile and Leon, Castile-La Mancha, Andalusia and Galicia. Thousands of people evacuated homes and hotels, including holiday-goers at beaches at the southern tip of Spain. Regional authorities said Tuesday afternoon that some of those evacuated from beach locations could return to their hotels. In Portugal, more than 700 firefighters were working to control a fire in the municipality of Trancoso, about 350 kilometers (217 miles) northeast of Lisbon. Smaller fires were burning further north. Turkey: Thousands evacuated, some on boats Firefighters largely brought a major wildfire in northwest Turkey under control, the forestry minister announced, a day after the blaze prompted hundreds of evacuations and led to the suspension of maritime traffic. The blaze broke out on agricultural land in Canakkale province. Fanned by strong winds, it rapidly spread to a forested area, then to a residential one. It forced the evacuation of 2,000 residents - some by sea - and led to 77 hospitalizations due to smoke exposure, officials said. Firefighters were still battling two other wildfires in Manisa and Izmir provinces in western Turkey, Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli said on social media. France: A red alert for heat The national weather authority placed most of France's southern region on the highest heat warning, with temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) expected for the second consecutive day. The heat will spread to the northeast, including the Paris region, Meteo France said. Some municipalities offered free or discounted access to public swimming pools. Most regions in central and southern France were monitored for the high risk of forest fires, after a deadly blaze last week in the Aude region. Officials said the fire was under control but will not be fully extinguished for weeks, with hot spots at risk of reigniting. Greece: Multiple evacuations for fires In Greece, seven major wildfires mostly in the west forced multiple evacuations, destroying homes and businesses, while flames reached the outskirts of the country's third largest city. The fire service scrambled resources to the port city of Patras where a forest fire burning through mountain forest threatened an industrial area. High winds hindered firefighting efforts on the islands of Zakynthos and Kefalonia, where authorities were on standby to evacuate tourist resorts which were not in immediate danger. Other severe fires burned in several areas on the western Greek mainland and on the island of Chios in the eastern Aegean Sea. Nationwide, the civil protection service issued more than 20 mobile phone alerts Tuesday with evacuation orders and guidance. Britain: Another heat wave Temperatures were expected to hit 34 Celsius (93.2 Fahrenheit) on Tuesday and Wednesday, especially in southern parts of England, including London. Officials define a heat wave as temperatures exceeding 25 Celsius for most of the U.K. - and 28 Celsius in London and its surrounding area - for three consecutive days or more.

(AP Photo/Noah Berger)(AP) The California Department of Forestry and Fire reported that the Gifford fire erupted on Highway 166 west of Cuyama on Friday afternoon and had spread to more than 30,500 acres by Saturday evening. Only 5% fire has been contained so far. 'The terrain and abundance of fuels have made suppression efforts challenging,' fire officials informed. 'But firefighters remain focused on a full-suppression strategy.' Gifford Fire: What is the status of wildfire in two counties? Driven by dry fuels, low humidity, and sunlight, the blaze started as several tiny spot fires that swiftly combined and spread. Both sides of Highway 166 still have active fires. In a bid to put out the fire and safeguard the nearby populations, firefighters are using both ground workers and aerial resources, such as helicopters and Very Large Air Tankers (VLATs). The Cuyama area and the rest of Santa Barbara County is under an air quality watch. The stretch of Highway 166 between Highway 101 and New Cuyama is closed. 3 injured in Gifford Fire Two contractors and one citizen suffered injuries in the Gifford Fire. The Forest Service reported that three people were injured in the Gifford Fire as of Saturday. One of the injured people was flown to a local hospital due to severe burn injuries. A rollover incident involving a UTV vehicle injured two contractors. While one with minor injuries was transferred by ambulance, the other suffered moderate injuries and was rescued by helicopter. All three were admitted to Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria for treatment.
