251 firms booked in Labour Department surprise inspections on Independence Day in Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts
In Coimbatore, surprise inspections led by Assistant Labour Commissioner (Enforcement) T. Subash Chandran found 181 violations in shops, industries, food outlets and transport undertakings. In Tiruppur, checks across 30 shops and commercial units and 47 food outlets revealed 70 violations, according to officials.
In total, 304 establishments were inspected across both districts, of which 251 were found to be in violation of the Tamil Nadu Industrial Establishments (National and Festival Holidays) Act, 1958. Employers face fines of ₹500 to ₹10,000, depending on the number of workers engaged. Follow-up inspections will be conducted in September to confirm whether workers received either double wages or a compensatory holiday.
The Act requires paid holidays on January 26, May 1, August 15 and October 2, along with five additional festival holidays approved by the Labour Department. If employees work on these days, employers must obtain written consent, inform inspectors in advance, and display the approval at the workplace.
Labour officials also used Gram Sabha meetings across both districts to create awareness on eliminating child and bonded labour. Local bodies were urged to insist on self-declarations from contractors in government tenders, ensuring that no child or bonded labour is employed.

Voltas, Blue Star: Here's why consumer durables stocks are in demand today
Consumer Durable stocks: Shares of consumer durable stocks were higher in trade on Monday, soaring by up to 10 per cent during intra-day trading on the NSE. The Nifty Consumer Durable Index, which tracks the performance of 15 stocks in the consumer durables sector, jumped by 3.14 per cent, reaching an intra-day high of 38,503. Notably, all the constituents of the index posted gains during intra-day trading. Among individual stocks, Voltas shares logged an intra-day high of 10 per cent, PG Electroplast rose by 9.60 per cent, Blue Star stock gained 8.64 per cent, Amber Enterprises India climbed 7.90 per cent, Whirlpool of India increased by 7.30 per cent, and Havells India added 6.94 per cent. Why are consumer durables stocks buzzing in trade today? The upward movement in consumer durables stocks is being fueled by the announcement of changes in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During his 79th Independence Day address, Modi announced that the GST regime will undergo a complete "overhaul" to make "everyday items cheaper" before Diwali 2025. Notably, the Centre has proposed a two-tier GST system with 5 per cent and 18 per cent slabs, along with a 40 per cent slab for a few items in the "sin goods" category. The removal of the compensation cess, according to a Business Standard report, will coincide with the rationalised and reduced rates. Furthermore, the simplification of the input tax credit system will be undertaken as part of this round of GST reforms. Capacity building, by strengthening GST tribunals, is also in the works. "Key segments and sectors that will benefit from the GST rationalisation include Consumer Staples (through better demand, lower raw material costs), Automobiles (4-wheelers), Cement, Hotels (sub-₹7,500 room rate inventory), Retail (footwear), Consumer Durables (mainly RACs), Logistics, Quick Commerce, and EMS (likely better demand for ACs)," analysts at MOFSL wrote in their report. Among the consumer durables sector, analysts at MOFSL have picked Voltas, and Havells India as top beneficiaries from the GST changes. Among the sector beneficiaries, analysts at MOFSL have identified Voltas and Havells India as the top beneficiaries of the GST changes. The former is expected to benefit from the reduced GST on air conditioners, which will now be taxed at 18 per cent instead of the previous 28 per cent, while the latter will benefit as 24 per cent of its topline comes from Lloyd's.

Voltas, PG Electroplast to Whirlpool — Consumer durable stocks rally up to 10% on GST rate reduction hopes
Consumer durable stocks, including Voltas Ltd., Blue Star Ltd., PG Electroplast Ltd., and Amber Enterprises Ltd., surged as much as 10 per cent on Monday, August 18, driven by expectations of a potential reduction in GST rates on consumer durables. Other consumer durable stocks like Dixon Technologies, Metro Brands also gained nearly 5 per cent in early morning session on Monday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day speech, announced that next-generation GST reforms would be introduced before Diwali, aimed at reducing the tax burden on the public and MSMEs. At present, air conditioners and large-screen televisions (above 32 inches) attract a 28 per cent GST rate, while items such as smartphones, refrigerators, smaller TVs, washing machines, and microwaves are taxed at 18 per cent. According to market experts, Centre's proposal to lower GST rates to boost demand for products like air conditioners and televisions. 'The Prime Minister recent announcement of potential GST reforms is a significant positive. These measures are expected to reduce the cost of essential goods, which should boost consumer spending and corporate profitability. This will likely improve market sentiment and attract fresh investment,' said Sugandha Sachdeva, Founder of SS WealthStreet. For the consumer durables sector, the move is expected to impact both demand growth and profitability. According to Kotak Institutional Equities, the rationalisation of GST rates could bring about a ₹ 2.4 lakh crore stimulus, with the biggest beneficiaries likely to be auto stocks and consumer durables. Separately, Haier Appliances noted that any such rationalisation would significantly spur demand, particularly at a time when air conditioner prices are set to rise next year due to revised energy ratings, Mint reported. Blue Star also remarked that although air conditioners face competition from several other categories, the change would still be highly positive for sales. "The upcoming GST meeting on September 9 is expected to bring significant reforms that could benefit various sectors. The government proposes eliminating the 12% and 28% tax brackets, retaining only the 5% and 18% slabs, and introducing a new 40% "sin tax" for select items like tobacco and gutka. This restructuring could lead to rate reductions for consumer goods, making items like air conditioners, white goods, toothpaste, soap, and shampoo more affordable," said Seema Srivastava, Senior Analyst at SMC Global Securities. Sensex jumps 1,168 pts, Nifty tops 25k: Here's why markets are rising today
Why markets are rising today: Indian equity markets opened with sharp gains on Monday, August 18, 2025, after Prime Minister Narendra Modi hinted at major Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms by Diwali 2025 during the Independence Day speech. Additionally, S&P Global Ratings' upgrade of India's sovereign credit rating to 'BBB' from 'BBB-' with a stable outlook also boosted investor sentiment. The BSE Sensex rallied 1,168 points in the intraday to hit a high of 81,765.77. The NSE Nifty50 reclaimed the 25,000 mark in the intraday to hit a high of 25,022, up 391 points from the previous day's close of 24,631. Last checked, the BSE Sensex was trading at 81,741.88 levels, up 1,144.22 points or 1.42 per cent, while the NSE Nifty50 index was up 381.40 points or 1.55 per cent at 25,012.70 levels. Twenty-five of the 30 Sensex constituents were trading in green, including Maruti Suzuki, Bajaj Finance, Ultratech Cement, Mahindra and Mahindra, Trent, and Hindustan Unilever, gaining in the range of 3 to 7.5 per cent. In the broader market, the NSE MidCap 100 index was up 1.43 per cent, and the Nifty SmallCap 100 index rose 1.2 per cent. All the sectoral indices were in green. The Nifty Auto index surged by 4.35 per cent, and the Nifty Consumer Durables index by 3.22 per cent. Nifty Bank, Financial Services, FMCG, Metal, and Realty also surged up to 3 per cent. Here are the key reasons behind the Sensex, Nifty rally on August 18: GST reforms: During his Independence Day speech at the Red Fort on Friday, PM Modi announced next-generation GST reforms aimed at reducing the tax burden across the country. On Sunday, he urged the state government to cooperate in implementing the proposed goods and services tax (GST) reforms, reported PTI. VK Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Investments, said the declaration by the prime minister on the next major reforms in GST by Diwali 2025 is a big positive. "The expectation is that most of the goods and services will be in the 5 per cent and 18 per cent tax slabs. Sectors like autos and cement, which are presently in the 28 per cent tax slabs, are expected to benefit. TVS Motors, Hero, Eicher, M&M and Maruti are likely to respond positively to the news. Insurance companies are also expected to benefit from the GST revision," Vijayakumar said. S&G Global rating upgrade: On Thursday, S&P Global Ratings upgraded India's long-term sovereign credit rating to 'BBB' from 'BBB-', the first upgrade in 18 years. The global ratings agency cited economic growth, improved monetary policy credibility, and sustained fiscal consolidation for the upgrade. S&P said it expects the impact of US tariffs on the Indian economy to be manageable due to its limited reliance on trade and the dominance of domestic demand in its economy. "The landmark ratings upgrade after 18 years signals enhanced investor confidence and could trigger sustained foreign inflows into Indian markets," said Devarsh Vakil, head of prime research at HDFC Securities. Trump Putin talks: The highly anticipated meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in Alaska concluded with no formal agreement. However, both leaders agreed to hold another round of talks, offering a hopeful sign toward resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Technical view From a technical perspective, Anand James, chief market strategist at Geojit Financial Services, said that a broad market reversal is already underway. "Last week's reversal attempts stalled in the 24,670-720 region, depriving Nifty of a bullish confirmation. However, 43 per cent and 39 per cent of mid and small cap index constituents respectively ended up above their respective 10-day SMAs, the highest since late July, suggesting that a broad market reversal is already in play," James said. "This encourages us to persist with the 24,850-25,000-25,200 objectives discussed last week. Expect 24,850 to pose a stiff challenge, but upside hopes may be persisted with, as long as the volatility thereof is contained above 24,650," he added.
