Asteroid's odds of hitting the Moon have now more than doubled
After a brief stint as the highest risk asteroid we know about, 2024 YR4 is now deemed harmless to Earth. In fact, NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) and the ESA's Near-Earth Objects Coordination Centre (NEOCC) now only give a very slim chance of any threat from it. That probability now sits at just 1 in 120,000, but in 2047, a full 15 years after the 2032 encounter that initially raised so many alarms.
However, based on the newest telescopic observations of 2024 YR4, its December 22, 2032 flyby may be the last time it ever passes by our planet.
The extreme sensitivity of the James Webb Space Telescope allowed astronomers to continue to observe the asteroid long after it moved beyond the capabilities of Earth-based telescopes. Using the data collected by Webb, scientists with CNEOS updated their calculations of 2024 YR4's orbital path.
Back at the end of February, when NASA had ruled out any significant danger to Earth from the asteroid, they also determined there was a 1.7 per cent chance it would strike the Moon.
The new data has now increased that probability to 4.3 per cent. That's more than double the initial chance of lunar impact.

A 4.3 per cent of impact still counts as a 95.7 per cent chance that it will miss the Moon. So, with it having no chance of hitting Earth on that date, 2024 YR4 could simply slip through lunar orbit with no effect at all — just a telescopic curiosity to observe as it passes by.
Still, at an estimated 65-metres wide, when 2024 YR4 was still thought to be a threat to Earth, it was (unofficially) considered to be a 'city-killer' asteroid.
It was highly unlikely to have hit anywhere inhabited. However, if it did, that size of asteroid would have caused extensive damage on a local level. For any city in the impact zone, the effects would have been catastrophic.

For comparison, the 20-metre asteroid that exploded over Cheylabinsk on February 15, 2013 produced an airburst — a pressurized wave of air — that shattered windows across the city when it reached the ground. Tiny fragments of the asteroid rained down over the area, with the largest piece, roughly 60 cm wide and with a mass of around 300 kg, punching a hole in the frozen surface of nearby Lake Chebarkul.
The airburst that would result from 65-metre 2024 YR4 exploding would be powerful enough to level buildings. While not large enough to produce a crater, the shattered asteroid would likely include several larger pieces that would cause further damage and injuries upon striking the ground.
If 2024 YR4 does hit the Moon in 2032, with no atmosphere to slow it down, it would impact with full force, travelling at nearly 13 kilometres per second, or over 46,000 km/h.

If it strikes somewhere in the dark region of the surface, the impact will certainly be noticeable from Earth. It wouldn't be powerful enough to affect the Moon's orbit, or knock any significant pieces off the Moon. It would certainly leave behind a crater that an orbiting spacecraft (such as NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter) would be able to find, though.
According to NASA, as of now, 2024 YR4 has moved beyond even Webb's ability to observe it, as it is now too close to the Sun. The next 'encounter' with the asteroid will be in 2028, with its closest pass at that time being around 20 times farther than the Moon. Telescopes should be able to find and track it, though, adding more to our knowledge of its orbit, and potentially locking down whether it will hit or miss the Moon when it returns four years later.

However, since these images come from many different sources, it can be difficult to combine them into a single picture. Google's artificial intelligence (AI) unit, DeepMind, recently announced an AI model called AlphaEarth Foundations that can create highly detailed maps of our world in nearly real time. AlphaEarth Foundations functions like a 'virtual satellite' that maps the world 'at any place and time,' Christopher Brown, a research engineer at Google DeepMind, said at a press briefing in July. The system combines trillions of images from dozens of public sources, including satellite images, radar scans, laser-based 3D mapping, and climate simulations. It maps the entire planet's terrestrial land and coastal waters. Google said the model can generate accurate enough data about an ecosystem down to an area of 10 square metres. Data from AlphaEarth Foundations takes up far less storage space than similar AI systems, which makes large-scale analysis more practical, the company said. During AlphaEarth Foundations's initial testing of data from 2017 to 2024, it beat similar AI models in identifying land use and estimating surface properties, with an average error rate that was 24 per cent lower, according to a paper published by DeepMind. Google hopes it will help researchers study changes across the planet for food security, deforestation, urban expansion, and water resources. High-resolution, regularly updated data help researchers measure environmental changes precisely and understand what is driving them. They can be used to track the effects of climate change, plan conservation, and manage resources like water and farmland. For example, in 2020, scientists at NASA and the University of Copenhagen mapped 1.8 billion individual tree canopies in the Sahel and Sahara regions of west Africa, using AI trained to recognise trees in satellite images. Without AI, this would have taken millions of people years to complete, according to the study authors. Since 2022, NASA's Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite has been taking high-definition measurements of oceans, lakes, reservoirs, and rivers over 90 per cent of the world's surface. Google says its model has already been tested by more than 50 organisations around the world for ecosystem monitoring and urban planning. For example, an environmental initiative in Brazil known as MapBiomas is using AlphaEarth Foundations' data to better understand agricultural and environmental changes, including in the Amazon rainforest. The model's annual datasets have given the team 'new options to make maps that are more accurate, precise and fast to produce, something we would have never been able to do before,' said Tasso Azevedo, the founder of MapBiomas, in Google's statement. Naval officer and Apollo 13 astronaut Jim Lovell dies at 97
Navy Captain and NASA astronaut Jim Lovell is perhaps best known for uttering some of the most infamous words in the history of space travel: 'Houston, we have a problem.' In addition to Apollo 13, the naval aviator flew on three other NASA spacecraft missions. NASA announced Lovell's passing on August 7, 2025, at the age of 97. Growing up, Lovell developed an interest in rocketry and built flying models. Through the Navy's Flying Midshipman program, he studied engineering at the University of Wisconsin between 1946 and 1948. When cutbacks were made to the program, Lovell applied to the U.S. Naval Academy and was admitted through the nomination of Wisconsin Congressman John Brophy. He graduated from Annapolis in 1952 and married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn, that same year. Lovell attended flight training at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida, and earned his Wings of Gold in February 1954. He was assigned to Fleet Composite Squadron 3 (VC-3) in California, flying McDonnell Banshee night fighters from the USS Shangri-La. After his deployment, Lovell provided pilot transition training for the FJ-4 Fury, F3H Demon, and F8U Crusader fighter aircraft. In January 1958, Lovell attended test pilot school at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland. In his class with fellow future astronauts Wally Schirra and Pete Conrad. Although he was the top graduate of the class, Lovell was assigned to radar tests instead of flight tests in an effort to spread talent across the Navy. Lovell was selected as an astronaut candidate for Project Mercury later in 1958, but didn't make the cut. The Weapons Systems Test Division at Patuxent River was established in 1960 through the consolidation of the Armament Test and Electronics Test divisions at Patuxent River 1960, and that was when Lovell became the program manager for the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. The next year, he reported to Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia, to serve as a flight instructor and safety engineering officer. In 1962, Lovell was selected as part of the second group of NASA astronauts, known as the 'Next Nine.' The Next Nine trained to fly on the Gemini and, ultimately, Apollo missions. In 1965, Lovell made his first spaceflight on Gemini VII and was part of the first rendezvous of two manned maneuverable spacecraft. The next year, Lovell made his second spaceflight on Gemini XII. In 1968, Lovell flew aboard Apollo 8, the first spaceflight to leave the influence of Earth's gravity, the first to use the Saturn V rocket, and the first to travel to the Moon. On Christmas Eve 1968, Lovell and his two crewmates read from the Book of Genesis during their broadcast back to Earth. The spacecraft lost contact with Earth when it orbited the far side of the Moon. When contact was reestablished, Lovell radioed, 'Please be informed, there is a Santa Claus.' Unfortunately, this cheery Christmas transmission is not the one for which Lovell is known. Lovell's most famous transmission is from the 1970 Apollo 13 mission, and is actually often misquoted. What he radioed from the damaged spacecraft was, 'Houston, we've had a problem.' The harrowing story of Lovell and his crew is immortalized in the 1995 Ron Howard film 'Apollo 13.' The problem aboard Apollo 13 happened during a routine liquid oxygen tank stir, when a fire started in one of the tanks. With oxygen bleeding from the command and service Module Odyssey, Lovell and his men used the Apollo Lunar Module as a space lifeboat for power, oxygen, and propulsion. With the help of NASA engineers and astronauts on Earth, the crew calculated a return trajectory that was achieved through precisely timed engine burns and manual thruster adjustments. Six days after lifting off from Florida, Apollo 13 splashed down in the South Pacific Ocean on April 17, 1970. Lovell is one of only three men to have traveled to the Moon twice, and the only one who has not set foot on it. Between his Gemini and Apollo missions, Lovell racked up an incredible 715 hours and five minutes in space, a record that stood until Skylab 3 in 1973. After retiring from the Navy and NASA, Lovell served as the CEO of the Bay-Houston Towing Company and President of Fisk Telephone Systems. His last job was executive vice president of the Centel Corporation in Chicago, Illinois, before he retired in 1991. Marilyn died in 2023 at the age of 93. After Frank Borman's death that same year, Lovell became the oldest living astronaut. His own death leaves 91-year-old Fred Haise as the last surviving crew member of Apollo 13. Lovell made 107 carrier deck landings and earned the Navy Distinguished Service Medal with gold star, Distinguished Flying Cross with gold star, Presidential Medal of Freedom, Congressional Space Medal of Honor, NASA Distinguished Service Medal, and the NASA Exceptional Service Medal with star.
