Bhubaneswar: The forest department has initiated an investigation into alleged illegal mining activities at Nischinta reserve hill, located on the Dhenkanal-Jajpur border.
The action follows a complaint regarding illegal operations on revenue land adjacent to forest and hilly areas.
Principal chief conservator of forests (PCCF), Suresh Pant, has directed Dhenkanal divisional forest officer (DFO) Sumit Kar to conduct a thorough inquiry and submit a detailed report. "Dhenkanal DFO is asked to take immediate steps for inquiry and take necessary action as per law," the PCCF wrote on X as soon as he received the complaint.
Kar confirmed that he was asked to look into the alleged mining activities on the hilly patches close to revenue land. "The Dhenkanal-Jajpur border is porous. We will identify who actually is/are excavating the area without valid permission. Earlier also, we had carried out inspection and stopped illegal mining operations," Kar said, adding that a joint enforcement operation with the mining department is currently underway to address the issue.

Preliminary findings suggest the presence of unauthorised crusher units operating in the area, exacerbating the environmental impact. The illegal mining activities reportedly disrupted the traditional movement routes of elephants, leading to habitat fragmentation and potential human-wildlife conflicts.
Local communities and environmentalists expressed concern regarding the ecological damage and threat to wildlife.
"Nischinta reserve hill, broad daylight loot conducted by organised lootera gang at village Nilhalprasad, Dhenkanal," Nabin Nanda, former Dhenkanal MLA, posted on X.
Earlier, wildlife activist Biswajit Mohanty had revealed that Hindol and Odapada tehsils have the highest concentration of stone quarries, and most of them are illegal. "The crater that develops after mining the stone quarries becomes at least 30m-40m deep. While the craters should be filled up after mining operation, as per rules under the Environment Protection Act, 1986, this is not done," Mohanty said.

False shooter report sparks panic: Villanova University receives 'hoax' call; triggers campus lockdown

Villanova says a report of a campus shooter was a 'cruel hoax' (Pic credit: AP) False reports of active shooters at Villanova University in Pennsylvania and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga sparked panic and temporary lockdowns on both campuses on Thursday. In Pennsylvania, a 911 call around 4:30 pm (local time) claimed a shooter was inside a Villanova law school building, with at least one victim reported wounded. Students received emergency alerts stating: 'ACTIVE SHOOTER on VU campus. Move to secure location. Lock/barricade doors.' University president Rev. Peter M Donohue later confirmed it was a hoax. 'Today, as we are celebrating Orientation Mass to welcome our newest Villanovans and their families to our community, panic and terror ensued,' he said in a statement. 'Mercifully, no one was injured and we now know it was a cruel hoax.' The incident triggered a massive law enforcement response, with Delaware County district attorney Jack Stollsteimer describing the operation: 'Law enforcement for the entire tri-state area is here. We are going door to door, room to room, to make this campus safe.' At a press briefing later, Stollsteimer said: 'If this was indeed a cruel hoax, this is a crime.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The 5 Books Warren Buffett Recommends You To Read in 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Authorities confirmed a full investigation is underway. Roughly four hours earlier, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga also locked down its campus following reports of a possible shooter at the University Centre or library. Students were instructed to 'Run. Hide. Fight.' The alert was lifted within an hour after law enforcement, including the FBI, found no credible threat. Both incidents come as students were returning to campus, with orientation programmes underway and classes set to begin next week.

Haryana's war on drugs: Over 3,600 arrests so far in 2025

1 2 Chandigarh: Haryana has witnessed a sharp surge in drug-related arrests this year, with 3,629 persons taken into custody between Jan and July, marking a 35% increase compared to the 2,684 arrests during the same period last year. As per the official figures shared by the Haryana State Narcotics Control Bureau (HSNCB), in 2024 (from Jan to July), a total of 2,684 were arrested in drug-related cases in the state. However, the figure of persons arrested in drug cases has reached 3,629 this year from Jan to July. Similarly, the enforcement figures released by the bureau show a sweeping escalation in action, as 2,161 FIRs were registered this year, compared to 2,022 last year, a 6.87% rise. Seizures have also increased, as 267 commercial quantity cases were booked against 238 last year (12.18% rise), while 1,493 intermediate quantity cases were recorded compared to 1,142 in 2024 (30.74% rise). Inter-state arrests rose to 293 from 175, a 36.57% increase. Similarly, the cases of preventive detentions have also climbed from 8 in 2024 to 39 this year with a 79.48% rise. Multi-accused cases almost doubled, rising from 574 to 1,030 reflecting an increase of 79.44%. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Many Filipinos don't know about this! Read More Undo "These numbers show that our grip on the supply network is tightening," a senior officer said. "We are targeting traffickers at every level, from local peddlers to interstate cartels." However, the officials of the bureau informed that with trafficking networks hit hard by the state agency, addicts are resorting to fatal substitutes - crushing and injecting painkillers. Medical experts say this misuse can trigger blood clotting, cardiac arrest, and sudden death within minutes. DGP O P Singh, head of the Haryana State Narcotics Control Bureau (HSNCB), informed that with narcotics harder to obtain, addicts are reportedly crushing and injecting tablets such as Tramadol, Tapentadol, and Pregabalin. "Improvised drug substitutes like injecting crushed tablets are not only hazardous, they are lethal. Misuse of such medicines can stop the heart instantly. No high is worth a life," he added. An official of the bureau informed that HSNCB is coupling enforcement with prevention. Between Jan and July, 698 awareness programmes were held, reaching over 1.15 lakh participants. Its sports for youth program covered 4,270 villages and engaged 2.8 lakh young people. Yet challenges remain. Convictions in commercial quantity cases dropped from 72.72% last year to 56.75% this year, raising concerns over trial follow-through. Officials, however, stress that prosecution is being strengthened. The bureau maintains that the drug war is not just about seizures but also about protecting citizens from dangerous improvisations born of scarcity.
