LA Metro continues to make life hard for fare evaders
The L.A. County Metropolitan Transportation Authority formally approved funding for the measure to upgrade existing gated stations with taller gates in February.
'Taller faregates have features such as precise motion sensors that can accurately detect fare evasion behaviors, such as 'tailgating,' crawling under and climbing over, as well as electromechanical locks to prevent forced entries and paddle-style doors that improve accessibility for customers with bicycles, luggage or other items,' the Metro Board said in their report on the issue in February. 'The taller faregates also have large color-coded displays to alert personnel of fare evasion attempts [and] these gates offer potential integration with third-party advanced security solutions, such as enhanced camera detection for weapons or other threats.'

The gates were originally piloted at the soon-to-be-completed LAX/Metro Transit Center Station, which was 'proceeding as planned,' according to Metro's report. Thus, officials decided that the technology should be implemented at ten existing stations, and a further 11 had the new gates installed as part of Phase 2 of the project.

The stations were selected based on data showing they have experienced 'significant' fare evasion and misuse of emergency swing gates, officials explained.
'As Metro continues to improve the station experience, taller faregates can be integrated into station redesigns, complementing current initiatives such as TAP to exit, improved signage and passenger flow enhancements,' Metro said. 'Taller faregates can improve safety and security for Metro customers and employees while encouraging fare compliance.'
Some of the new gates had already been installed and were being tested late last year; Fifth District Supervisor Kathryn Barger, who serves on the Metro Board, posted a video of her using the new technology in December.
'I'm thrilled Metro is piloting new hardened gate technology,' her post to X said. 'These taller gates are designed to reduce fare evasion and enhance access control. It's another step in Metro's commitment to improving safety.'
The Hollywood Bowl could get a Metro station
With the new gates come three new non-contract full-time equivalent positions for maintaining them: a supervising engineer, a senior engineer and a principal software engineer. The positions will assist in the third-party integration of the gates and support future projects.
The project will cost a total of $15.3 million and is being funded by Proposition C.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — Police in Keningau, Sabah have dismantled a human trafficking syndicate that allegedly exploited secondary school students as sex victims, following a series of special operations between July 24 and 29. Keningau District Police Chief, Superintendent Yampil Anak Garai, told Harian Metro that investigations revealed the syndicate had recruited teenage girls, including two Form Two students, to be prostituted to customers. 'The activity came to light after the victims' parents lodged a report on July 24. 'Following this, a team from the Keningau District Criminal Investigation Division rescued four victims aged between 13 and 21, and arrested eight individuals to assist in the investigation,' he said when contacted by the national daily today. He added that an 18-year-old girl, known as 'Elly', was believed to have acted as a pimp and has already been charged in court under Section 14 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007. According to him, the syndicate used social media applications to seek customers, charging around RM200 per service before sending the victims to designated hotels. The proceeds were then split between the suspects and the victims. 'All victims have been taken to Keningau Hospital for medical examination and placed at a Women and Children's Protection Shelter. 'For the two underage victims, the court has granted a three-month protection order, and they have been placed at the Ampang Protection Home in Selangor until 13 November,' he said.

We've Located the Criminals in D.C.
Thank goodness the National Guard is being called in. Lawlessness in D.C. is rampant, and someone needs to take a stand! Stephen Miller was correct to point out that D.C. is awash in crime. Everywhere he looks: criminals. He can barely take three steps without running into one. From the moment he arrives at work in the morning until the second he leaves, one crime after another, piling horrendously high. Illegality everywhere, and casual disregard for the well-being of law-abiding Americans! Some people say that being around crime is just the price of living in a city, and that those intimidated by it just need to toughen up. But it's so brazen! Get off the Metro at any point in D.C., but especially near the White House, and you might encounter one of these miscreants, flaunting their impunity in broad daylight. Why isn't law enforcement doing its job? Members of the violent January 6 mob, released back on the streets! A man who three whistleblowers alleged had told Department of Justice employees to ignore a court order and say 'Fuck you' to a judge, headed to the federal bench! The people who dismantled the Department of Education, which had been established by an act of Congress, just wandering around! The Supreme Court ultimately decided the dismantling was okay, but the justices weren't guaranteed to feel that way! There is a word for when you do something that seems illegal and just hope that a judge will let you off. But that's the trouble with D.C. These judges are just giving slaps on the wrist for the most egregious offenses. And that invites more crime! Now, wherever Stephen looks, people are taking the Constitution as a mere suggestion. With judges like this, you could order SEAL Team Six to assassinate somebody, and you might get away with it. Who could feel safe in a city where that was true? Some madman recently filled the streets with weapons of war! Tanks! Actual tanks! Forget brandishing a gun in a public place—he insisted on tanks! Everywhere, there are people breaking the law, or trying to. Even the man Stephen works for turns out to be a convicted felon, who once said that 'when you're a celebrity, they let you do it.' He also urged a mob of people to descend on the Capitol 'peacefully and patriotically.' Technically, not a crime but—an impeachable offense! He accepted a plane from Qatar. He stored classified documents in a bathroom! Never mind what his company was doing in New York State, or what E. Jean Carroll's civil suit found. The things he is trying to do via executive order boggle the mind! And you should see his associates! The point is, crime is everywhere, if only you know where to look. Including in other neighborhoods of the city, but surely those crimes are best dealt with on a local level, and parachuting in federal law enforcement with an unclear mandate will only make the situation worse. Instead, the National Guard ought to focus on tackling the major terror on the streets of this city! Why, at any moment you or your neighbor could get yanked into an unmarked van by a masked man, without any regard for habeas corpus. Los Angeles all over again! How can anyone feel safe while this keeps happening? People who are trying to do everything the right way, snatched from hallways after their court hearings. Professors, detained after expressing their views. Americans who just want to work hard and support their families, petrified to go to work every day because of the shameless wrongdoers in D.C. and what they have unleashed. And whoever masterminded the abduction of so many people—seized without due process and whisked away to a foreign gulag—is still at large, and staring back at Stephen every time he looks into a mirror. Not safe, not safe!

Trump's federal crackdown on D.C. causes confusion: What to know
President Trump is stepping up federal law enforcement in D.C. this week, deploying officials from over 15 agencies in a high-profile push to crack down on crime. Why it matters: D.C.'s mix of federal- and city-controlled land creates overlapping law enforcement zones — making it easier to increase arrests, but also raising alarms over accountability and civil rights. State of play: Trump's high-visibility, multi-agency operation launched Friday — led by the U.S. Park Police, with potential for extension. It includes familiar agencies like U.S. Capitol Police, Metro and Amtrak police. Other agencies seen less frequently on D.C. streets include: DEA, FBI, ATF, Homeland Security and the U.S. Marshals. Federal officers will patrol in marked units and uniforms. How they'll coordinate with the Metropolitan Police Department is unclear. The agency didn't respond to Axios' requests for comment. 🧭 Target zones: Tourist-heavy areas — the National Mall, downtown museums — plus Rock Creek Park, Anacostia Park, Union Station, the George Washington and Baltimore-Washington parkways, and more. Friction point: Civil rights groups warn the crackdown is unnecessary and risky. "A huge concern is training. When you start injecting entities with a different mission and different way of looking at the world, that can be a recipe for danger," ACLU-D.C. legal director Scott Michelman tells Axios. He points to federal authorities' response to racial justice demonstrations in Lafayette Square in 2020 during the first Trump administration, which led to lawsuits and policy changes years later. "Accountability mechanisms for federal law enforcement — if they violate the Constitution — are so much weaker versus state and local." Meanwhile, D.C.'s patchwork of city-controlled and federal land — and generally harsher penalties for federal violations — makes things murkier. Zoom in: 90% of D.C. parks are federally controlled. That includes neighborhood gathering spaces like Malcolm X, Dupont and Logan Circles, as well as most of downtown's green space. Penalties can be more severe on federal land for minor offenses — including open alcohol containers or marijuana possession, which is legal in D.C. "You can come across any agency at any given time," says Sharell Jarvis, an organizer with Free DC, a group that campaigns to protect Home Rule. Catch up quick: On Tuesday, Trump threatened to federalize D.C. following what police said was an unarmed carjacking attempt near Logan Circle and beating of a former DOGE staffer.
