Cost to go to summer school increasing at Albuquerque Public Schools
Hummingbirds take flight to Albuquerque: How to attract, where to find the tiny flyers
Since 2021, summer school has been free for all current APS high schoolers. Students who are not a part of the district had to pay $250 per half-credit. This summer, every student will have to pay that $250 fee per half-credit unless they are receiving federal assistance. In that case, they would have to pay just over $62 per half credit. The cost is the same whether the class is in person or online. Summer school starts on June 5.

The best US cities to call home are far from NYC — see how the Big Apple fared
Everything is bigger — and possibly better — in Texas. WalletHub is out with its annual list of America's best real estate markets — and all signs point to McKinney, Texas. The northern Dallas suburb's ample housing stock and healthy job market helped it rise above 299 other US cities this year, including some particularly strong contenders elsewhere in Texas, North Carolina and California. Advertisement 6 McKinney, Texas is a rapidly growing suburb of Dallas. Jacob – 6 McKinney buyers are spoiled for choice, thanks to a surplus of new housing. trongnguyen – McKinney's superior real estate market is largely due to a decade-plus building spree. A glut of new housing built between 2010 and 2023 offers buyers plenty of turn-key, long-lasting housing options, according to WalletHub. Advertisement The fast-growing city offers the 74th cheapest median home prices out of the 300 cities studied, and the 11th highest rate of job growth. McKinney is a darling among 'best of' real estate rankings, including a recent RentCafe analysis that declared the booming suburb the best place to rent, too. 6 A view from the downtown area of Cary, North Carolina, which came in second place. ying – 6 Richardson, Texas sits fifth on the list. Jacob – Advertisement Cary, North Carolina trailed behind McKinney in second place, largely due to its low cost of living. The city, located just outside the state's capital of Raleigh, boasts some of the country's lowest energy, phone service and home maintenance costs. While Cary residents save on bills, they still have to shell out on their homes. Cary, as well as Raleigh overall, exploded in popularity after the COVID-19 pandemic, and currently ranks 96th for housing affordability. Cary locals are well-equipped to afford it, though — the prosperous city offers some of the lowest unemployment rates in the nation and excellent rates of job growth, according to WalletHub. Nearby Durham, North Carolina, came in at No. 4. 6 Durham, North Carolina ranked fourth in the country for its real estate market. SeanPavonePhoto – Advertisement 6 Homes in sunny Irvine, California. HunYoung – 'The best cities may not always be the cheapest, but they offer excellent housing options and long-term stability,' said analyst Chip Lupo. The cities of Irvine, California and Richardson, Texas occupied the rest of the top five. New York City's real estate prospects landed it in 230th place this year. The Big Apple's unique housing stock put up dismal numbers for the median number of days on the market, median home-price appreciation and home prices as a percent of income.

Hertz to sell used vehicles online through Amazon Autos partnership
Hertz on Wednesday announced it will start selling preowned vehicles on Amazon Autos, a move meant to bolster the car rental company's retail operations as it looks to bring in more profits. Shares of Hertz soared Wednesday. Under the partnership, customers can browse from thousands of used Hertz vehicles on Amazon Autos, e-sign the paperwork, complete their purchase online and pick up their vehicle at Hertz locations. Customers who live within 75 miles of the four initial cities — Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles and Seattle — can start browsing on Amazon as soon as Wednesday, and Hertz eventually plans to expand the arrangement to 45 locations nationwide. The partnership gives Hertz, known for its car rentals, more visibility and a potential profit boost for its auto sales business. It also marks an expansion for Amazon's nascent autos business, which it launched in December through a partnership with Hyundai. Before that, shoppers could browse digital showrooms and compare prices on Amazon, but not purchase cars directly through the e-commerce giant. Amazon Autos added used and certified preowned vehicles to its selection of offerings earlier this month starting in Los Angeles, after previously selling exclusively new vehicles. Hertz Car Sales is Amazon Autos' first fleet dealer and will offer used vehicles from brands including Ford, Toyota, Chevrolet and Nissan. Hertz said it sells hundreds of thousands of vehicles per year, in addition to running its signature car rental business. 'Our goal is to reimagine the car-buying experience and meet customers where they are — whether online or in person — with convenience, confidence and scale,' said Jeff Adams, executive vice president of Hertz Car Sales. 'Amazon Autos is the ideal partner to help us deliver on this as customers can shop our expansive inventory of high-quality used cars on the same trusted marketplace where millions shop every day.' The partnership with Amazon Autos is aimed at expanding Hertz's digital retail presence and making its used vehicle inventory more accessible to customers. It's part of a larger strategy that Hertz set out earlier this year, led by CEO Gil West, to boost its retail business by increasing its retail footprint, raising awareness of the Hertz Car Sales brand and building strategic partnerships. After entering bankruptcy during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and dealing with a failed EV strategy shortly after that, Hertz last year introduced its 'Back-to-Basics Roadmap' turnaround plan. The focus is on fleet management, revenue optimization and cost efficiency. Hertz said the first quarter of this year marked its strongest-ever quarter for retail vehicle sales. During the company's Aug. 7 earnings call, West said Hertz has seen strong momentum in its Rent2Buy program, which allows customers to take a used car home for a three-day rental period before committing to buying it. Hertz announced last week that the program is set to reach more than 100 cities. — CNBC's Annie Palmer contributed to this report.

Target's next CEO started as an intern—and rose up the ranks over 22 years
Twenty-two years ago, Michael Fiddelke was a finance intern at Target. Now, he's set to become the company's next CEO. Fiddelke, currently Target's chief operating officer, will take over the top position and join the board of directors on February 1, 2026, the company announced on Wednesday. He'll replace Brian Cornell, who's run the retailer for the last 11 years — overseeing it through record stock highs in 2021 and an ongoing market slump essentially ever since. When Fiddelke interned at Target in 2003, he was a graduate student at Northwestern University studying business administration and finance. Target hired him as a full-time analyst the following year, and he got promoted or changed jobs within the Minneapolis-based company roughly every two years, all the way up to his CEO appointment. His resume at Target between 2007 and 2024 includes several director titles, vice president, senior vice president, executive vice president and chief financial officer. "I can tell you that the intern that walked through those doors down the road 22 years ago wouldn't have predicted a Target path that leads to today," Fiddelke, 49, said in a video on LinkedIn on Wednesday. Fiddelke's job as CEO may not be easy. For the past four years, Target's sales have been generally flat, a trend that the company's leaders have described as a blip — but customers, former employees, vendors and analysts say is largely a result of subpar experiences in leanly staffed stores and a Trump-era turn away from diversity efforts, CNBC reported on July 15. "They have kind of lost their identity," said one former employee, who worked at Target for nearly 10 years. Target's fiscal second-quarter results exceeded Wall Street's earnings expectations, but its full-year outlook still predicts a single percentage point decline in sales. "Getting Target back to growth is my top priority," Fiddelke wrote in his LinkedIn post. "We'll need to operate differently, move with urgency and focus, and make bold choices to get there. We have the foundation to build new momentum, and I'm eager to accelerate work already underway and find new ways to deliver the incredible products and experiences our guests expect from us." When Fiddelke takes over, he'll join the likes of Nike's Elliott Hill, Microsoft's Satya Nadella and General Motors' Mary Barra as people who went on to lead the companies they joined as interns. His decades of experience at Target during both high and low periods help him "understand this business" and what makes it "distinctly unique," he said on Wednesday during a call with reporters. "I know you're not satisfied with where Target is today. Neither am I," he said in the LinkedIn video, speaking to consumers. "Getting us back to growth is my No. 1 priority and I'm eager to get to work."
