Autistic schoolboy hooked on trendy snus after being forced to buy vapes for other kids
A mum, from Wishaw, spoke out as a leading advice charity warned of a worrying surge in reports of young people experimenting with nicotine pouches - widely used by sports stars and celebrities.
A mum has told how her 13-year-old autistic son got hooked on trendy 'snus' after being forced to buy nicotine products for other teenagers.
The healthcare worker, from Wishaw, spoke out as a leading advice charity warned of a worrying surge in reports of young people experimenting with the nicotine pouches - widely used by sports stars and celebrities.
The 'devastated' mum said her son had been 'coerced' by other youngsters, some who carry knives, to buy vapes - even though he is clearly underage.
Now he has been caught stealing to fund his own habit for vapes and white tobacco pouches, which users place between their upper lip and gum.
The 41-year-old, who has turned to Advice Direct Scotland for support, said: 'It's like living with an addict now because that's what these things are - addictive.
'His personality has changed. He used to be quite calm but now he goes into a meltdown if he can't get a vape or snus.
'I'm absolutely devastated. My son is only 13. He's autistic and vulnerable and yet he's been coerced and manipulated by older kids who should know better.
'Some of these kids carry knives. They saw his kindness, his eagerness to fit in, and they exploited it. They coerced him into buying vapes for other underage kids, knowing full well he wouldn't say no. My son looks 13 so there is no doubt that he's underage and he's going in there with his uniform on.
'It is terrifying. He stole £170 from us and that is so out of character. It is unbelievably stressful and yet nothing is being done.'
Earlier this month, new data emerged suggesting that young people under the age of 18 are now more aware of nicotine pouches.
Sports stars like ex-Celtic boss Neil Lennon and ex-England forward Jamie Vardy have been known to use snus, along with former boxer Mike Tyson and late superstar DJ Avicii.
A survey commissioned by charity Action on Smoking and Health (Ash), found the percentage of 11-17 year olds who said they knew of the pouches grew from 38% in 2024 to 43% this year.
Nearly 4% of children in this age group had tried the pouches, equivalent to 210,000 young people.
Hazel Knowles, consumer lead at Advice Direct Scotland, said: 'We have noted increased concerns from people about the rising use of nicotine pouches among young people.
'There are fears that marketing strategies that include sweet flavours, trendy packaging and social media promotion are seen as targeting youth and non-smokers.
'Many young users are unaware that nicotine pouches contain addictive substances.
'Open, non-judgmental conversations and access to educational resources are key to prevention.
'People can reach out to us if they have any issues about the sale of these pouches to youngsters or any other consumer issues relating to this growing phenomenon.'
Concerns over snus were raised after the charity logged more than 100 reports of kids - many still in their school uniforms - being sold vapes in the last year.
It says enforcement is failing to stop rogue traders from selling vapes to children - some as young as 11 years old.

From June 1, it became illegal to buy or sell disposable vapes. Only devices considered to be reusable are legal.
Knowles added: 'We have noticed the growing prevalence of underage vape sales - a trend that threatens the health and wellbeing of children. Vaping products are finding their way into the hands of children with disturbing ease.
'Every sale to a child is a breach of trust, a moment where profit is placed above protection. We urge anyone with any concerns to contact us so that we can work to counteract this worrying trend.'

Sir Keir Starmer should quit as Prime Minister over his failings around the grooming gang scandal, a campaigning survivor has said. Sammy Woodhouse, who helped expose the Rotherham abuse scandal, said she was disgusted by Sir Keir's conduct in recent months, adding that any politician who had rejected calls for a national inquiry should resign. Ms Woodhouse was just 14 years old when she was groomed and raped by 24-year-old Arshad Hussain, who was the leader of a child exploitation gang. She eventually spoke about her ordeal publicly and her testimony helped bring about Prof Jay's inquiry, which revealed that at least 1,400 children had been abused in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013. Her abuser was later jailed for 35 years and she became a leading campaigner fighting to expose the national grooming gang scandal. Speaking to the Planet Normal podcast, Ms Woodhouse told Allison Pearson of her anger at the way the Prime Minister had initially dismissed the need for a national inquiry and had accused those in support of jumping on a far-Right bandwagon. She said: 'Well, I'm not far-Right and I'm not jumping on a bandwagon. He is just a coward. At the end of the day we're talking about children being groomed, abused, raped, tortured, trafficked, murdered, impregnated, criminalised. 'We are talking about the most heinous crimes that could ever happen, and he wants to just throw these stupid comments in, that we're far-Right and racist, it's absolutely disgusting. 'I don't think he should be prime minister. People are asking me: 'Do you want an apology from him?' Well, no, I don't want an apology. I want a resignation. 'All these politicians that voted no to an inquiry should not be politicians. It's absolutely disgusting that they still are. I think they've just shown their true colours.' Ms Woodhouse said her abuser and rapist believed he was untouchable because people in authority were frightened of being perceived as racist or Islamophobic. She said: 'I was never treated as a victim. I was treated as his mistress, as his girlfriend, and as though, you know, the whole thing was consensual. 'Pretty much all the children were treated like that. If you look at my files, he was invited to medical appointments.' She said: 'In my own files it shows that an anti-racism coordinator was actually attending my meetings.' She also alleged that one of the police officers investigating her case – who was later killed – had bought drugs from her abuser. Ms Woodhouse told the podcast that the Government should ensure that any convicted rapists or child abusers who hold dual citizenship are deported once they have served their sentence. She said: 'I think we have a very weak government, and we have people – and I think it's probably worse now than what it was back in my day, as a child – that don't want to upset the Pakistani Muslim community. 'Now, I don't care what race you are, what religion you are, what gender you are, if you are raping children, you should be prosecuted. And if you're not from this country, get 'em out.'

Daughter of murder victim stabbed to death minutes after he visited her as a baby on Father's Day appeals for help to catch his killers ten years on in poignant letter
The daughter of a murder victim stabbed to death minutes after he saw her on Father's Day has written a heartbreaking letter appealing for help to find her dad's killers ten years after the tragedy. 'I was never given the chance to get to know him or for him to watch me grow up,' the 12-year-old wrote in the letter about Christian Bagley, who was killed in 2015 when she was only 19 months old on Father's Day. On June 21, 2015, the 30-year-old had been to see his toddler at his ex-partner's house in Herefordshire. As he walked home, he was cruelly stabbed and was only able to stagger short distance before being found lying on the pavement in a pool of blood. He was several injuries to his back and arm, which are believed to have been caused by a bladed weapon. The weapon used, believed to be a kitchen knife, remained embedded in his left arm, while the handle that snapped off during the attack has never been found. Emergency services were called to the scene at 10.50pm, and Mr Bagley was taken to Hereford County Hospital, where he later died. But no one was ever charged for the father's murder despite several people being arrested at the time. Now ten years on, his daughter has once again appealed for anyone with information to come forward. She wrote: 'Somebody taking my dad away from me when I was little is something that can never be replaced. 'I have no memories of my dad or his presence in my life - only what other people have told me. 'I was never given the chance to get to know him or for him to watch me grow up. I'll never be able to spend Father's Day, Christmas Day or a birthday with my dad. 'There's an emptiness that should not be inside me because somebody murdered my dad. 'That void within myself will always be there. 'Everything he did that day – 21.06.15 – was a 'last time' experience. 'They still haven't found who killed my dad or any answers to why somebody cruelly took him away. I love you dad!' Christian's mother, Janette Bagley, said the last ten years of her life without her son were 'hell' and described him as bed her son as the 'kindest person you would ever meet'. She said: 'If I was across the water, he'd have walked across it just to help us.' 'All I want to know is why? Why have you done this to my boy? He didn't deserve it, he's walking along, going home after seeing his baby daughter on Father's Day.' 'Please, somebody somewhere knows something. Ring up, or send a message, or whatever.' 'Everybody knows who I am – I don't want to be the person out there who's 'Christian Bagley's mother'. 'I want somebody to see me for who I am but for all this time, all I've got now is this, year in, year out. Just tell us why. Somebody out there knows.' She added: 'He loved his daughter, his daughter was his life. When his daughter was born, he was the most elated person you'll ever know.' Crimestoppers has issued a £20,000 reward for anyone with information on the murder which leads to the conviction of those responsible. Detective Chief Inspector Gareth Lougher, of West Mercia Police's Major Investigation Unit, said: 'While we have continued to investigate this case, a decade on, it seems timelier than ever to appeal again to the public to help us get justice for Christian's daughter, mother and all his family and friends. 'We hope this heartfelt message from a daughter who has grown up never knowing her father will prick the conscience of someone carrying a burden of knowledge about his murder to step forward and help us bring those responsible before the courts. 'After ten years, loyalties and allegiances may have changed, and we hope anyone who knows something will do the right thing and speak to us. At the time, Mr Bagley's brother, Wayne Wood, said: 'He had been to visit his baby daughter when he was stabbed in the back and arm. 'He was heading for a friend's house for help because he didn't have his mobile phone with him.' He was described as a 'loveable lad' who enjoyed playing golf with his friends at the weekend.
