MNCF urges police to investigate threatening posts against cyclists
MNCF president Datuk Amarjit Singh Gill said the national body views the recent altercation between a bus driver and a group of cyclists in Batu Arang that went viral recently, seriously.
The incident has sparked intense debate online which has led to unsavoury posts against cyclists being made.
"I would like to stress that such posts are irresponsible and constitute a criminal threat towards thousands of cyclists who use public roads daily," said Amarjit in a statement released today (July 9).
"MNCF urges the police to investigate these threatening social media posts which encourage (other road users) to hit cyclists on purpose.
"Any accident (collision) done on purpose by a motorised vehicle against a cyclist may be an offence under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987."
He stressed that cyclists have a right to cycle on most public roads — except highways and specific roads — but must do so in a responsible manner.
"Cycling is an activity that is allowed on public roads, except on highways or roads where it is specifically prohibited," said Amarjit.
MNCF reminded cyclists to abide by traffic regulations and ensure they are equipped with safety equipment such as helmets, highly visible apparel as well as lights.
The national body also encourages cyclists who ride in a group to ride in a single file and be aware of their surroundings.

Bau police chief DSP Dr Daram Ruer said the operation yesterday, dubbed Op Motosikal, commenced around 6pm, with a total of 35 motorcycles and 45 individuals inspected. Early morning accident claims motorcyclist's life

City police chief ACP Kasim Muda said the accident occurred around 2am near 88 Commercial Centre as the rider was heading towards Jalan Lintas. Initial investigations found that the Yamaha Y15ZR rider lost control and veered left before falling into a 10-metre concrete drain. The impact caused the rider to be thrown into the drain and he was pronounced dead at the scene due to serious head injuries. Further checks revealed the rider did not have a valid driving licence and the motorcycle was registered under another person's name. The weather at the time was clear and traffic along the road was light, ACP Kasim added. JPJ to audit bus operator involved in UPM crash
KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) will carry out a Safety Inspection and Audit on the company whose bus was involved in an accident while transporting a kindergarten group along Jalan Persiaran Universiti 1, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in Serdang recently. Its director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said JPJ received a report on the incident on Saturday (Aug 2) and has handed it over to the police for further investigation. "JPJ will conduct an audit and inspection of the bus operator and take further action once the audit report is completed,' he told Bernama on Sunday (Aug 3). On Saturday, Serdang district police chief ACP Muhamad Farid Ahmad said the incident occurred at around 12.18 pm and involved a bus carrying five teachers and 30 kindergarten children on an outing. Dashcam footage that went viral on social media showed the bus going out of control before veering off the road and crashing into a tree. Three children and one teacher sustained head injuries and were treated as outpatients at Serdang Hospital, while the bus driver was detained to assist in investigations under Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987. In a statement issued on Sunday, Muhamad Farid said the accident is believed to have been caused by the bus driver falling into a microsleep due to insufficient rest. He said the 44-year-old male driver has been remanded for two days starting today to assist in the investigations. Preliminary investigations also found that the driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the incident. "However, records show he has 13 traffic summonses registered under his name," he said. - Bernama
