Tekun Nasional to introduce financing scheme for TVET grads to start businesses
TUARAN: Tekun Nasional, an agency under the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP), is set to launch a special micro-financing scheme for graduates of technical and vocational education and training (TVET).
Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Datuk Ewon Benedick said the financing scheme would provide opportunities for TVET graduates from various educational institutions to obtain business capital, particularly those wishing to start small-scale ventures based on their skills.
He said an initial budget of RM30 million has been allocated for the programme, and the amount can be increased depending on demand and public response.
'This TVET entrepreneur financing scheme will be launched in conjunction with National TVET Day in Melaka this June. Hopefully, this scheme will open wider opportunities for TVET graduates to obtain capital to start businesses should they choose the entrepreneurship route.
'This is among the ministry's efforts to support the national agenda to develop not only graduates but also careers and entrepreneurship within the TVET field,' he said in a statement after officiating the Closing Ceremony of the Career Skills Course in the Oil and Gas Industry here today.
Ewon said the scheme would offer financing to TVET graduates nationwide, including from Sabah, such as those from ESTC Academy, vocational colleges, or other training institutions.
He said Tekun Nasional remains committed to strengthening the national economy by expanding support to TVET participants.
'As an agency under KUSKOP, TEKUN Nasional understands the vital role of the TVET community in building a skilled workforce and empowering the nation's entrepreneurial sector, while also upholding one of the core pillars of Malaysia MADANI – Wellbeing.
'Therefore, I welcome more TVET participants to seize this opportunity and work together to drive Malaysia towards becoming a high-income nation through skills-based entrepreneurship,' he said.
As of this month, a total of 306 TVET participants have benefited from TEKUN Nasional's financing, covering various sectors such as motorcycle and car workshops, electrical wiring, welding and metalworks, mechanical services, and electronics repair workshops.

KOTA BELUD (June 3): Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick stated that all development projects in Sabah funded by the Federal Government must be carried out according to the schedule set. Ewon, who also serves as co-chairman of the Federal-State Sabah Development Project Monitoring Coordination Intervention Committee together with Sabah Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, said the committee is tasked with ensuring that all projects in the pre-implementation category can be initiated. 'Datuk Shahelmey and I are responsible for monitoring and proposing solutions to any issues causing delays in the commencement of these projects. 'Once the projects are handed over to the implementing agencies and contractors, monitoring will continue through other platforms such as the Development Action Meeting,' he said after officiating the Kaamatan Festival celebration and the opening of the Kampung Podos open hall here yesterday. Ewon was commenting on the latest developments in the meeting of the Federal-State Sabah Development Programme and Project Monitoring Coordination Intervention Committee. He said the implementation of the Special Intervention Meetings, initiated earlier this year, had shown positive results. 'Many technical and administrative issues have been resolved more quickly through direct engagement between implementing agencies, ministries, and the State Government,' he said. Based on the report presented at the Sabah Federal-State Development Project Monitoring Coordination Meeting last May, the number of projects in pre-implementation status has been reduced from 207 projects to 137 projects. Ewon described this decrease as a positive development resulting from the cooperation of various parties. 'We have proposed several measures to technical departments and the ministries responsible for the projects so that any outstanding issues can be discussed and resolved. 'I hope the percentage of projects that have commenced will continue to rise in the upcoming meetings,' he said. He also expressed his appreciation to all ministries, the Sabah Government and technical departments that have succeeded in expediting procurement processes, contractor appointments, and tenders for projects that had not yet begun. 'I am satisfied with the cooperation shown by all those involved in this intervention committee,' he said.

Kota Kinabalu: The Water Department scandal which involves officials entrusted with ensuring supply, pocketing millions through a scheme is a good case study on corruption in Sabah. The seizure by MACC of half the RM114.5 million found stashed in luxury autos, offices and homes of the civil servants involved, is the second biggest in the history of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission. MACC head Azam Baki said the seizure was made following the arrests of a director and a deputy director of the department which led to the seizure including assets of mistresses acquired from the ill-gotten money which Sabahans endured water shortages. 'The Sabah Water Department corruption case happened around 2016. MACC seized over RM114.5 million in cash, including luxury cars, jewellery and properties from the suspects,' said Datuk Roger Chin, past President of the Sabah Law Society. He was speaking at NGO Sabar-Kopi Tiam Council podcast on 'Why is Sabah Struggling? Unpacking GLCs, Corruption & Lost Billions' recently. 'The 1MDB case also had such astronomical amount of money seized. What is scary is how normalised corruption has become. We all should be outraged. 'In the case of the Sabah Water Department, the RM114.5 plus luxury cars, jewellery and properties, were kickbacks for awarding contracts and projects. 'Why was what happened bad? Because it is embezzlement of public funds. How did that happen? Very simply put, all these contractors are business people. They are not going to be paying their kickbacks from the profits that they made. 'What they have done is to add that portion (kickbacks) into the contract. This inflates the contract. 'Say the actual cost plus normal profit is RM150. All of a sudden you have to add on the kickback. Let's just randomly say it is RM30. 'So, instead of putting in a bid for RM150 ringgit which is cost plus the right amount of profit, you make it RM180. What then happens is the government spends extra RM30 of taxpayer's money for this enlarged project. Which should not be the case. 'What that means is RM30 that is meant for other things for the people has now disappeared. Chin said the second reason why it is really bad is because those contracts were given to people who were aligned to the people who got the kickbacks. 'So whether it is the most qualified people doing the contracts is highly debatable and probably not. Hence, if the people who got the contracts were not the best for the job means there would be a lot of contracts that were substandard or not carried out properly. 'So now you know why our water system is so bad. 'Multiply that RM30 kickback by a few thousand and you get hundreds of millions. And you also talk about the people who got the jobs who simply do substandard work. 'Accessibility to clean water is one of the main problems in Sabah. 'What happened was that money meant for clean water has been taken out of the system. Which is why we have lack of clean water. 'Not only clean water, think about the hundreds of millions of ringgit which should have gone into infrastructure development whether it is water or electricity. 'RM114 million was taken out of the system and this is just the Water Department. How about the other corruption issues. There are easily several more. Perhaps about half a billion ringgit or maybe more taken out of the system. 'If we had just kept that money in the system and built the infrastructure that we needed, we would have far better infrastructure today,' he said, adding this is why corruption is a huge problem. Fund to empower Indian women entrepreneurs doubled to RM100mil
SUNGAI BULOH: The government has doubled the allocation for the Prosperity, Empowerment and A New Normal for Indian Women (PENN) programme to RM100 million, which aims to assist Indian women in building their businesses. Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan said the additional RM50 million would empower more Indian women through entrepreneurship. "This initiative has proven that the PENN programme is not only successful but is truly needed by the community," he said during the launch of PENN 2.0 at Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia (AIM) headquarters in Bandar Sri Damansara. Launched in April last year, PENN has benefited 6,247 Indian women, with a total of RM42.7 million in funding disbursed, including support for 1,062 new entrepreneurs. Ramanan also praised the resilience of Indian women entrepreneurs, describing them as hardworking, disciplined and determined. The fresh allocation is expected to reach over 10,000 Indian women entrepreneurs through AIM. "This injection will boost support for recipients to expand their small businesses in sectors such as food, tailoring, beauty and community services." Ramanan said AIM beneficiaries under PENN have reported income growth of 20 to 30 per cent. Its 2024 non-performing loan rate was just 0.02 per cent, the lowest in the institution's 38-year history. "This is not merely a loan, it is a tool to elevate families and transform lives." Ramanan added that PENN offers micro-financing without financial statements, guarantors or collateral, alongside continuous mentorship by AIM. He said under PENN, interested applicants can apply for a loan starting from RM3,000 up to RM30,000. "The loan cost can go up to RM30,000 even if there are issues like bankruptcy, CTOS or CCRIS, so it is open to all. "It is meant to assist the underprivileged, especially those who have nowhere else to turn to," he said. Indian women entrepreneurs who are interested in the programme are encouraged to visit the AIM website or any AIM branch to apply and benefit from the support available. Last year, Ramanan announced an RM50 million AIM fund to support Indian women entrepreneurs through PENN.
