Knicks firing head coach Tom Thibodeau

Knicks firing head coach Tom Thibodeau

Yahoo2 days ago

The Knicks' Tom Thibodeau era has come to an end.
SNY NBA Insider Ian Begley has confirmed that the Knicks are firing Thibodeau after five seasons as the team's head coach.
Begley previously reported that Thibodeau has been on shaky ground in the past and survived, with team president Leon Rose making the decision to stick with Thibodeau amid past uncertainty.

Working with Rose, Thibodeau led the Knicks to a period of sustained regular season success that had eluded the organization, making the playoffs in four of his five seasons. But even with a talented roster that features Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, and other key pieces, the Knicks couldn't get over the hump in the playoffs, falling to the Indiana Pacers in six games in the Eastern Conference Finals as questions arose about Thibodeau's rotation and substitutions.
Overall, Thibodeau went 226-174 in the regular season, and 24-23 in the playoffs as the Knicks' head coach.
The Knicks now begin a search for their 32nd head coach.

Pacers vs. Thunder Game 1 prediction, odds: 2025 NBA Finals pick, best bets

It's not the NBA Finals anyone envisioned, but two of the league's smallest markets are competing for a ring in 2025. Oklahoma City is a massive -800 series favorite at bet365, with the Pacers sitting at +550. These are the second-longest odds we have seen in an NBA Finals matchup since 2005, with the only bigger favorites being the 2017-18 Warriors, who were -1075 against LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in his final year before heading to Hollywood. In Game 1, the Pacers are big 9.5-point road underdogs with the moneyline coming in at +340. Indiana has been excellent on the road, going 6-2 away from Gainbridge Fieldhouse this postseason. It will require a herculean effort to replicate that against a Thunder team that is 80-18 between the regular season and playoffs. We've talked about the Pacers' ability to dominate late in games, but some cracks in the armor reared their ugly heads at the back-end of that Knicks series. For starters, the bench appeared to give the Pacers some problems once now ex-Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau opened up his lineups and gave some much-needed minutes to Landry Shamet and Delon Wright. Tyrese Haliburton warms up prior to Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals of the 2025 NBA Playoffs against the New York Knicks at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on May 31, 2025 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Getty Images Now, imagine Wright and Shamet being replaced with Alex Caruso and Cason Wallace and you have a tough time wearing down your opposition as the Pacers did the Knicks. The Thunder have too many pieces that they can call on if some of their starters need a rest so I suspect Oklahoma City wins this series rather easily, at worst in six games, but likely before that. After posting a strong net rating through two rounds of the playoffs and early on against the Knicks, the Pacers cratered to the end the series and have a 0.0 net rating in final quarters during the playoffs. Indiana is 12-4 in the fourth quarter during the playoffs, the same record as the Thunder, but all wins are not created equal. Twelve minutes played against the Denver Nuggets is not the same as 12 minutes played against the Knicks or Heat. Betting on the NBA? Look to Oklahoma City to win this series going away, thanks to suffocating defensive pressure and strong depth at all positions that should work against Indiana's run-and-gun strategy. Live bet the Thunder if the young team gets first-half jitters and you can get them at plus-money and back their fourth quarter against the spread price of -1.5 (-108). Child Childs reflects on his fight with Kobe Bryant in 2000

Child Childs reflects on his fight with Kobe Bryant in 2000 Back in the 1999-2000 season, the Los Angeles Lakers had a 21-year-old guard named Kobe Bryant who was emerging into a legitimate superstar. He was still tapping into his potential that year, but he averaged 22.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 1.6 steals per game while being named to the All-Star team for the second time. He came up big in a few of the Lakers' biggest games and moments during the Western Conference finals and NBA Finals as they powered their way to their first world championship in a dozen years. But along the way that season, he dipped his toes into the pool of indiscretion. During a late-season matchup versus the New York Knicks at what was then known as Staples Center, Bryant got into a fight with Chris Childs. The two started talking trash, and right after Bryant threw an elbow at Childs, the Knicks guard reacted by throwing two punches. At the time, one motive behind Childs punching Bryant may have been presumed to be disrespect. Back then, plenty around the league were leery of Bryant, who grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia and in Italy and seemed to lack the street cred that many other players self-assuredly carry. But in a recent interview with Brandon "Scoop B" Robinson, Childs professed "nothing but respect" for the late Lakers legend. 'We never sat down and talked about it; we were competitors,' Childs said recently. 'We weren't friends. We didn't go to dinner, but we had mutual respect for each other as far as how we played the game and how we prepared, and I have nothing but respect for that man for what he's done on the court and off the court.' Childs ended up playing nine seasons in the NBA, with four and a half of them coming with the Knicks. A native of Bakersfield, Calif., he lacked skills but was the type of prototypical 1990s scrapper whom no one wanted to double-cross. He averaged 6.9 points and 4.9 assists in 25.2 minutes a game for his career. He went undrafted in 1989 and had to pay his dues in the now-defunct Continental Basketball Association for several years. Along the way, he also had to overcome an alcohol problem before he finally made his way into the roster of the then-New Jersey Nets for the 1994-95 season. After his NBA career ended in 2003, he watched as Bryant's legend grew, both on and off the court. 'If I can take a fraction of that and give back to the community; give back to girls basketball and give back to what I do which is mentoring young men and trying to help them become exceptional men,' Childs said, 'then I've done his legacy proud and hopefully others can follow suit.' If Childs lacked respect for Bryant in 2000, the fact that his tune has drastically changed speaks to Bryant's success, resume and legacy.
