Tyrrell Hatton admits hiding true feelings at The Open - 'It'll get me in trouble'
Tyrell Hatton admits he has tweaked his behaviour at Royal Portrush to avoid 'getting into trouble' during The Open Championship. The fiery Englishman has often come under scrutiny for his on-course behaviour.
Examples range from snapping a club during the 2024 World Tour Championship in Dubai to calling his driver a 'piece of s***' after a triple bogey at Quail Hollow during the PGA Championship. That has seen the 33-year-old LIV star rack up fines and be labelled a 'terrible influence' by the likes of Ewen Murray.
On Friday, during the second round of the 153rd Open, Hatton carded a 69 to sit five under at the halfway point. He was left visibly frustrated after reaching six under with a birdie two on the 13th, only to cover the final five holes in one over.
Yet, he didn't react angrily as many would have expected, keeping his cool - at least on the surface. Hatton has now revealed that he has merely got better at keeping his frustrations to himself, still cursing but not letting the cameras and microphones pick up his expletives.
Explaining how he has become more conscious of the impact his reactions have on his playing partners, he said: 'I don't know. I was still pretty vocal. Maybe I'm just having to do it away from the microphone.'
When asked what he was telling himself between the 14th and final hole, he admitted: 'It was pretty negative stuff.' When asked to elaborate, Hatton replied: 'No, it'll get me in trouble.'
He explained further: "I'm not going to change. It's just how I am, how I play. I'm 33. I think that ship has sailed, to be honest.
'I've always felt like even though I can be losing my s***, I can get over the next shot and still have a clear mind of what I'm still trying to achieve on that shot. Although from the outside it looks like I'm completely gone, in my own mind I still know where I'm at.'
Asked whether it does him any harm, he noted: 'I've always said, as long as it's not affecting my playing partners.
"Sure, there's been times I've probably gone too far and you comment on a putt when they're putting on the same line and then it maybe affects where they're hitting their putt.
'Stuff like that, I think that's part of what you learn as you get more experience, so I do try and avoid that kind of thing. But yeah, as long as I'm not affecting the other guys, then I'm not going to change.'
Whatever people say about Hatton's conduct, he has been in impressive form of late, achieving a career-best T4 finish at the US Open last month. He was in contention for the lead with two holes left but back-to-back bogeys on the 17th and 18th holes scuppered his hopes.
He also went into the final day at Royal Portrush in contention after a strong Saturday showing, carding a three-under par 68 which put him T4. Hatton also made a standout eagle at the par-5 seventh which drew roars from the crowd.

The 21-year-old won the inaugural Bruntsfield Links Golf Society Women's (Scratch) Open Championships on Sunday. A Stewartry woman won a prestigious golf competition in Edinburgh on Sunday. Ailsa Brannock, 21, who is a member of Castle Douglas Golf Club and Southerness Golf Club, won the inaugural Bruntsfield Links Golf Society Women's (Scratch) Open Championship. It was a Scottish Golf Order of Merit tournament organised by the Scottish Golf Women's Team coach and member of Bruntsfield Links, David Patrick. The 36 hole tournament was played over one day. In some very testing weather conditions, Ailsa was in the lead after round one with a level par score but it did not tell the full story. Ailsa was five over after 12 holes on her first round but showed great character and determination to shoot a remarkable five birdies in the last six holes to finish the round on level par to hold a two shot lead on the rest of the field. The second round was less dramatic as Ailsa finished two over for the round and tied the lead with former Scottish Women's Amateur Champion Jennifer Saxton of Dunfermline. There was a play-off for the championship which took place two hours after Ailsa had finished her second round as the rest of the field were still to finish. The play-off was sudden death starting at the first hole and Ailsa won the championship with an amazing chip-in birdie at the very first hole.

Ben Griffin is a two-time PGA Tour winner and enjoying the best year of his career, but that didn't stop him from cheekily requesting a portion of recent Ryan Gerard's winnings PGA Tour ace Ben Griffin cheekily demanded a substantial slice of Ryan Gerard's £540,000 prize pot after disclosing he played a crucial role in his landmark triumph. Gerard, 25, secured his first PGA Tour victory 10 days ago at the Barracuda Championship, defeating previous champion Erik van Rooyen by three shots. Alongside the silverware came the substantial prize fund that represents the largest earnings of his professional career. Yet there existed a scenario where Gerard wouldn't have even participated in the competition as he was scheduled to jet off to Northern Ireland for The Open Championship, where he held second alternate status. His eleventh-hour journey to Portrush, where Scottie Scheffler emerged victorious, never materialised following a message from Griffin, 29, encouraging him to stay in America and concentrate on the tournament at Tahoe Mountain Club - counsel that has subsequently transformed his fortunes, reports the Mirror US. Griffin, who won the Charles Schwab Challenge in May, explained their communication prior to the Wyndham Championship, where he'll compete against Gerard. I mean, it was Tuesday, the answer's no. "I think any other golfer would have said that, it just so happens that me and Ryan are close and so he texts me." Whilst Griffin himself is savouring a career-best season where he's pocketed over £6million in prize money, it didn't prevent him from cheekily requesting a portion of Gerard's winnings. "Just 50% of his earnings, is all," Griffin quipped. "I still haven't received anything. I've been looking on Zelle and Wells Fargo and Merrill accounts, nothing's hit yet ... I'll take the credit I guess." Griffin last month became entangled in a row involving golf legend Jack Nicklaus, where the Chapel Hill-born player received sympathy from the 85-year-old, who spoke out against on-course television interviews. He was taking part in the Memorial Tournament last month, the tournament that is hosted by the 18-time major winner. After walking towards his ball in the second round, Griffin was approached by Golf Channel's Rex Hoggard, who carried out a walk-and-talk interview. The reporter said: "Joked yesterday, I asked you what your energy levels are like, and your wife had one answer. She said she was exhausted, you said you were fine. How are you?" Griffin replied before coverage switched back to the commentary box where Nicklaus, who was sitting as a guest, expressed his disapproval. "I can't stand that," he said. "The interview on the golf course. Let me tell you how I think, how I feel. I mean, seriously, here's a guy who's leading the golf tournament, he's just hit the edge of the rough, he's got a very difficult shot on a very difficult hole, and you're talking to him about stuff that totally takes his mind off of what he was doing. "How would you think [Ben] Hogan would respond to that question?" TV host Terry Gannon stepped in by claiming: "Times have changed." Nicklaus replied: "You would not have any teeth left if you did. He'd hit you right in the face with it."
