'Incredible' update as mum fighting for life after horror fall on holiday island

Daily Mirror12-07-2025
Mum Emma Hickey, 42, is critically ill in hospital after falling head-first down the stairs while on a family holiday in Tenerife - but her family say she is 'fighting strong'
The family of a mum fighting for her life after a horror fall at a Tenerife hotel have issued an emotional new update. Emma Hickey was on holiday with her partner Stephen Brougham and their two children when she collapsed and tumbled head-first down the stairs, leaving her critically ill in hospital.
The 42-year-old carer's injuries included a brain haemorrhage and multiple neck fractures, and saw her put into an induced coma. She remains unconscious in intensive care. Her family - who are still with her in Spain - now face an agonising wait to see when Emma might be well enough to be flown home for treatment, and have started a GoFundMe page to help pay towards costs after running into problems with her travel insurance provider.

Her collapse, which was followed by a series of convulsions, is believed to have been caused by an infection from mosquito bites. She went to see a doctor on the 10th day of their 12-day holiday after developing a severe reaction to the bites, and was given an injection.
Despite feeling under the weather, Emma was determined to make the most of the holiday for her family's sake, but suffered the fall on June 23 while on her way to visit a chemist.
Because of the seriousness of her injuries, the family say doctors have told them her recovery "will be long, uncertain, and incredibly challenging".

Now, in a new update on the GoFundMe page, Emma's family revealed her infection is beginning to clear - and said she is "fighting strong".
Karen Whelan, who is organising the fundraiser, wrote: "We just wanted to say the biggest, most heartfelt thank you from Stephen, Sophie, Bobby, Emma's sisters, family, and friends.

"We've been blown away by the generosity, kind messages and support from friends, family, and strangers. Seeing so many people rally around Emma has been incredibly moving and uplifting during a tough time.
"Emma is making small progress day-by-day. While she has not yet woken up, she is fighting strong, and the infections are clearing a little bit each day. She has a long way to go, but we are confident that the outpouring of love and support is keeping her strong and fighting."
She also said that the neurologist is "happy" for her to be transferred to a hospital in their home country of Ireland "once she has a full medical team accompanying her."
The family are now hoping to arrange a specialist air ambulance "in the next week or so."
Karen explained the travel insurance company Emma used "are being quite difficult", making matters more complicated, but said the "continuing support from everyone" is keeping the family going. "Emma is fighting hard right along with us", she added.
The fundraiser has so far raised over €65,000 (£56,000) of a €70,000 (£60,000) target.

Expert names toxic foods that dog owners should avoid this summer

As BBQ's and beach trips fill our weekends, vets are warning owners to steer clear of popular summer foods. Searches for 'what foods are toxic to dogs' have surged in the past month and with BBQs, beach trips and pub gardens all in full swing - so it's no surprise dog owners are growing more concerned. ‌ Canine behaviourist and nutrition consultant, Dr Emma Scales-Theobald, at Canine Cottages, has revealed the popular summer foods pet owners should avoid letting their furry friend get their paws on as well as tips for keeping dogs calm and content when dining out. ‌ Six common summer foods that can harm your dog Ice cream ‌ Whether you're a 99 cone or mint choc chip type of person, you might want to skip sharing with your furry friends. "Ice cream made for people may contain sweetener xylitol, which is toxic to dogs," said Dr Emma. "It can also cause a stomach upset as dogs are commonly lactose intolerant. It's best to seek out dog-friendly ice cream instead of sharing yours." Avocado and guacamole ‌ Avocados might be a brunch staple, but they can wreak havoc on dogs. 'Avocados contain persin, which can cause severe vomiting and diarrhoea in your dog. The avocado pit can also be a choking hazard,' she warned. Chives and onions While these are key to seasoning everything from burgers to sausages but it's highly toxic for your dogs. ‌ 'Chives and onions are part of the Allium family, which is toxic for dogs because they contain a toxin called organosulfides, which can harm your dog's red blood cells.' Cherries, peaches and plums ‌ There are so many delicious fruits to enjoy in the summertime including delicious juicy cherries, succulent peaches and tasty plums. However, Dr Emma warned that these fruits contain cyanide and are a choking hazard to dogs. Raw potatoes While feeding your dog cooked potatoes is perfectly safe, when they are raw it's toxic for dogs and poses a risk. ‌ Raw potatoes contain solanine, a toxic chemical for dogs that can cause stomach upsets or worse. Cooked bones Dogs and their bones go paw in paw, but you should never give them a cooked bone. Dr Emma said: 'Your dog might enjoy chewing on a raw bone but watch your dog doesn't get hold of any cooked bones because these can splinter and cause internal injury.' ‌ Can dogs have puppacinos? Puppacinos have been trending over the past years, but they're not always risk-free. 'Puppacinos can be fun for dogs to enjoy but many dogs are lactose intolerant and they can be high in sugar,' said Dr Emma. 'In small quantities and moderation, these can be enjoyed, and milk products may be fine for your dog.' 'But it might be safer to opt for a vegan alternative, such as oat or soya whipped cream.' Tips for eating out with your dog this summer If you're planning a dog-friendly trip to the pub or a café, Dr Emma's explains how to help your pup feel at ease Keep them busy - Bring a long-lasting chew or enrichment toy like a LickiMat or puzzle feeder to keep them entertained. Bring home comforts - A blanket or travel bed can help them feel settled and know where to rest and will smell like home for them. Reward calm behaviour - Give treats for staying put and gradually increase the time between rewards. You could also use calming treats or collars to help relax them too. Walk them first - A long walk before your outing means they're more likely to rest (or nap) while you eat. 'With summer in full swing, many of us may be tempted to feed our furry friends a little titbit from the grill, or a few licks of our ice cream without realising how harmful this could actually be.' Digital Pr Manager, Sarah Pring said 'Although in most cases, a trip to the vets will be able to treat your pet, in this instance, as pet owners, it's important to understand what these foods can do to our beloved pets.'

'The day she died, I had sent her a video of my 11-month-old finally walking, and she was in tears over the video, phoning everyone to tell them, and I'm glad that's the last video she saw of the kids.' ‌ A FCDO Spokesperson said: 'We are supporting the family of a British woman who died in Spain.' A GoFundMe has been set up to help with the costs of repatriating Angela and her funeral.
