
Scientists detect biggest ever merger of two massive black holes
The black holes, each more than 100 times the mass of the sun, began circling each other long ago and finally slammed together to form an even more massive black hole about 10bn light years from Earth.
The event is the most massive black hole merger ever recorded by gravitational wave detectors and has forced physicists to rethink their models of how the enormous objects form. The signal was recorded when it hit detectors on Earth sensitive enough to detect shudders in space-time thousands of times smaller than the width of a proton.
'These are the most violent events we can observe in the universe, but when the signals reach Earth, they are the weakest phenomena we can measure,' said Prof Mark Hannam, the head of the Gravity Exploration Institute at Cardiff University. 'By the time these ripples wash up on Earth they are tiny.'
Evidence for the black hole collision arrived just before 2pm UK time on 23 November 2023 when two US-based detectors in Washington and Louisiana, operated by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (Ligo), twitched at the same time.
The sudden spasm in space-time caused the detectors to stretch and squeeze for one tenth of a second, a fleeting moment that captured the so-called ringdown phase as the merged black holes formed a new one that 'rang' before settling down.
Analysis of the signal revealed that the colliding black holes were 103 and 137 times the mass of the sun and spinning about 400,000 times faster than Earth, close to the theoretical limit for the objects.
'These are the highest masses of black holes we've confidently measured with gravitational waves,' said Hannam, a member of the Ligo scientific collaboration. 'And they're strange, because they are slap bang in the range of masses where, because of all kinds of weird things that happen, we don't expect black holes to form.'
Most black holes form when massive stars run out of nuclear fuel and collapse at the end of their life cycle. The incredibly dense objects warp space-time so much that they create an event horizon, a boundary within which even light cannot escape.
Physicists at Ligo suspect the black holes that merged were themselves products of earlier mergers. That would explain how they came to be so massive and why they were spinning so fast, as merging black holes tend to impart spin on the object they create. 'We've seen hints of this before, but this is the most extreme example where that's probably what's happening,' Hannam said.
Scientists have detected about 300 black hole mergers from the gravitational waves they generate. Until now, the most massive merger known produced a black hole about 140 times the mass of the sun. The latest merger produced a black hole up to 265 times more massive than the sun. Details are to be presented on Monday at the GR-Amaldi meeting in Glasgow.
Before the first gravitational wave detectors were built in the 1990s, scientists could observe the universe only through electromagnetic radiation such as visible light, infrared and radio waves. Gravitational wave observatories provide a new view of the cosmos, allowing researchers to see events that were otherwise hidden from them.
'Usually what happens in science is, when you look at the universe in a different way, you discover things you didn't expect and your whole picture is transformed,' said Hannam. 'The detectors we have planned for the next 10 to 15 years will be able to see all the black hole mergers in the universe, and maybe some surprises we didn't expect.'

They are the miniscule sea creatures devoured by fish, seals, Nicole Kidman. Now scientists have discovered that adding a krill to your meals could be the secret to the perfect weight-loss diet. An experiment involving overweight Glaswegians found that taking supplements containing oil from the shrimp-like creatures helped the participants keep muscle mass while losing weight. Researchers found taking a daily krill pill maintained dieters' muscle and strength despite dramatic cuts to their food intake. Their study – published in the journal Obesity – concludes: 'Supplementation may offer a beneficial strategy to enhance the quality of weight loss.' Krill are tiny crustaceans that form a vital link in the food chain, feeding on microscopic plankton and then being hoovered up themselves by fish and sea mammals. They live in vast swarms and flourish best in the colder waters of the polar regions, also helping to slow climate change by fixing carbon in the seabed. The blue whale lives exclusively on krill, consuming as much as four tons a day. But their potential value to our own health is now emerging as their oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants that can nourish the brain, heart and joints. For the latest study – led by Dr Dalia Malkova, a senior lecturer in human nutrition - 41 middle-aged Glaswegians were chosen, all of whom were either obese or very overweight. All went on a special weight-loss regime for two months, in which they fasted on alternate days when they consumed only 500 calories. They also underwent physical tests of their strength both at the start and end of the trial. Roughly half the dieters were given four krill oil capsules a day with their meals while the others were handed placebo pills containing plant-based substitutes. After two months, participants in both groups had lost an average of ten pounds on the scales. But 96 per cent of the weight shed by the krill group was fat, compared with only 73 per cent in the group given a placebo. That additional muscle retention meant those taking the supplements lost next to no hand-grip strength, even as the others weakened markedly. And they also gained power in their legs while the placebo group showed no change. In an added bonus, the krill-takers saw their blood pressure and markers of inflammation drop faster too. The authors explain that weight-loss diets cause 'reduced muscle mass, potentially leading to diminished muscle strength [and] this could have adverse effects on metabolic health.' But the Glasgow results show that taking krill oil 'is a valuable strategy to mitigate some of the adverse effects of diet-induced weight loss'. Hollywood actress Kidman, 58 - who won a Best Actress Oscar for the 2002 movie The Hours - is the face of Swisse, an Australian health supplement company that sells oil capsules from krill harvested in the Antarctic. She starred in a television advert for the pills, dancing on a beach and running into the sea, alongside the slogan: 'Live healthy. Be happy.'

Nepalese gardeners' compost praised for quality in Reading study
Gardeners from a town's Nepalese community have been taking part in a study into the quality of their homemade from the University of Reading, in Berkshire, found that mustard plants grown in composts, created from kitchen and garden waste, grew better than those in shop-bought Deepti Angra, from the university's department of crop science, said it showed that homemade composts can be a better medium to "supercharge plant growth".The researchers plan to analyse the nutritional content of the mature plants to determine whether the use of homemade compost has any effect on health when eaten. The research project involved the Integrated Research Development Centre (IRDC), which works with underrepresented communities in Reading, with a particular focus on the Nepalese initial trial saw mustard leaves - commonly grown and eaten by the Nepalese community - grown both in glasshouses and found that plants grown in the homemade composts developed more rapidly, produced larger flowers and leaves, and exhibited stronger root Angra said the study confirmed "what many gardeners have long suspected"."The nutrient composition analysis showed our community-made compost was at least comparable, if not better than store-bought options, as it exhibits higher concentrations of micronutrients," she said."This ensures soil enrichment, which better supports the growing plants."Through the project, community members learned to create two types of compost - one from wooden chips and garden waste, the other from kitchen waste, with both showing "excellent growing capabilities".Krishna Neupane, IRDC chair said: "This research has empowered our Nepalese community group to be personally involved in their own waste management and food production."The scientific evidence supporting our homemade compost practices gives confidence to households wanting to make more sustainable, more affordable choices." Gods of Silicon Valley haven't done their history homework
If you were in any doubt quite how much planet-destroying energy is required to fuel AI, Mark Zuckerberg announced last week that Meta was building a couple of multi-gigawatt data centres. One, being built in Louisiana, is going to be nearly the size of Manhattan and will draw on 5 gigawatts (GW) of energy; the other in Ohio, due to be operational next year, will be at least 1GW. To put that in context, on a quiet day, the entire UK can run on as little as 15GW. But it was not so much the scale of these data centres fuelling 'superintelligence' that caught my eye, but what Zuckerberg had chosen to call them. The first to come on stream is Prometheus. The sound you hear is Mary Beard and other classical scholars rolling their eyes. Zuckerberg has named it after the titan in Greek mythology who stole fire from the gods to give to humanity, a heroic act that Meta's founder believes has powerful echoes for his own selfless giving to all of us the 'poke' on Facebook. But has he forgotten the second part of the tale? Prometheus was punished for this terrible deed by being tied to a rock and having his liver pecked out by an eagle — for eternity. The second data centre, the one the size of a city, is named after another titan: Hyperion. While he may not have come to such a sticky end, he did have sex with his sister in order to birth the sun, moon and dawn, a relationship possibly more problematic than that of the kiss cam couple caught at the Coldplay concert. Earlier this week my colleague James Marriott wrote about the utter weirdness of the past. It was, as usual, a wonderful column, but he accused Silicon Valley billionaires of being consumed with the present and suffering from 'historical incuriosity' in their belief they have discovered the solutions to humanity's eternal questions. I'm not sure that's true. If anything, Zuck and his fellow tech bros are overly obsessed with classical history. Growing up, Zuckerberg moved high schools specifically so he could indulge his passion for Latin; his sister is a respected classics scholar. He adores the Roman Empire so much so that he and his wife, Priscilla, have named their three children Maxima, Aurelia (after Marcus Aurelius) and August, after Augustus Caesar. Last year he unveiled a rather alarming 7ft green statue of his wife, explaining he was bringing 'back the Roman tradition of designing sculptures of people you love'. His man-crush on Augustus, he has explained, is because 'basically, through a really harsh approach, he established 200 years of world peace'. I'm not sure the Britons, Gauls or Germanic tribes would quite see it that way. As the Roman historian Tacitus said: 'They make a desert and call it peace.' Many pockets of the business world, but Silicon Valley in particular, revel in Roman and Greek history, showing their fondness for all things classical by giving their hedge funds or data centres grandiloquent names, an attempt to burnish their sometimes flaky ventures with a veneer of respectability. Nomura, the Japanese investment bank, back in 2021 launched Cassandra, 'an early warning model for financial crises', perhaps failing to realise that the fate of Cassandra was that she was never to be believed. In 2023, a defence company started in California developing 'solar powered birds', lightweight autonomous aircraft designed to fly up in the stratosphere. It has called itself Icarus. What?! Does it not know its namesake flew too close to the sun and plunged to a terrible, watery death? I have a theory — a sketchy one, admittedly — that the more desperately classical a business name is, the more likely it is to get into trouble. Nike and Oracle are clear exceptions to this rule, but it certainly holds true for Hermes, the parcel delivery company named after the messenger to the gods. It had such a terrible reputation for tardiness and losing customers' packages that it was compelled to rename itself Evri. Arcadia, Philip Green's clothing empire, ended up being not a rural idyll but a chain of empty urban shops. Any venture named after the titans is risky; not just, obviously, Titanic but also Titan, the ill-fated mini submarine that imploded in 2023. Clarium was the investment vehicle set up by Peter Thiel, the billionaire co-founder of PayPal and early investor in Facebook, who delights so much in playing a Marvel super-villain he has signed up to have his body cryogenically frozen after he dies. Clarium derives from the Latin for 'clear' or 'famous', but the only thing famous about Clarium was that it lost 90 per cent of its value. Since then, Thiel's ventures have referenced The Lord of the Rings, notably Palantir, named after Tolkien's all-seeing stones. When you are selling your highly secretive surveillance technology to government agencies around the world, I'm not sure it's wise to name it after a device which — when it fell into the hands of Sauron — became a tool of control and manipulation. This casual approach to nomenclature, however, is typical of a generation of business leaders who have read the classics widely but shallowly, who believe history and literature can be crunched down to a post on LinkedIn or, in Zuckerberg's case, a T-shirt slogan. He has been spotted wearing one saying 'Carthago delenda est' — Carthage must be destroyed. Perhaps he needs to spend more time with his sister, who can point him to Oedipus Rex, where a caution is given to any man hubristic enough to defy the gods: a 'rough doom' will tear him down, repaying 'his pride, breakneck, ruinous pride!'
