Cruz Azul beats Vancouver Whitecaps 5-0 for CONCACAF Champions Cup title
Sepúlveda finished with a tournament-best nine goals. Ignacio Rivero, Lorenzo Faravelli and Mateusz Bogusz also scored for Cruz Azul, which built a 4-0 lead by halftime.
The Liga MX club tied crosstown rival Club America for most titles in the tournament. It was Cruz Azul's first title since 2013-14 when La Máquina beat Tijuana.
The Whitecaps were looking to make history as the first Canadian team to win the tournament, and the first winner from Major League Soccer since the Seattle Sounders in 2022.
Cruz Azul had four shots on goal in the first half and scored on all of them. La Máquina took advantage of a defensive lapse by the Whitecaps and Ignacio Rivero coolly finished with his left foot in the seventh minute in front of cheering home fans at Estadio Olímpico Universitario.
Faravelli's goal came after a similar defensive lapse, struck from distance and went into the net after hitting the post.
After Sepúlveda's sliding goal in the 37th, Bogusz added a goal in the 45th just before the teams went into the break. Sepúlveda added another goal on a header in the 50th.
It was Cruz Azul goalkeeper Kevin Mier's fourth clean sheet of the tournament. The Whitecaps had no shots on goal during the match.
Vancouver was without Sebastian Berhalter because of yellow card accumulation. He scored in both legs of the semifinal against Lionel Messi and Inter Miami.
The Whitecaps had hoped that captain Ryan Gauld would return from a knee injury in time for the game but he was not available.
Cruz Azul advanced with a two-legged victory over UANL Tigres.
It was the first meeting between the Whitecaps and Cruz Azul.

Lizbeth Ovalle is expected to join the Orlando Pride from Mexico's Tigres UANL on a record transfer fee of $1.5 million, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The deal is expected to be completed by the National Women's Soccer League's transfer deadline on Monday. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the agreement had not yet been formally signed. The transfer fee surpasses the $1.3 million fee Arsenal paid Liverpool for Canadian striker Olivia Smith in the English Women's Super League last month. That broke the previous record fee of $1.1 million that Chelsea paid the San Diego Wave for defender Naomi Girma in January. Ovalle, a 25-year-old winger, has led the Tigres of Liga MX Femenil to six titles since joining the club in 2017. She is the team's all-time leading scorer with 136 goals. She's also made 58 appearances for the Mexican national team with 20 goals. Nicknamed La Maga (The Magician), Ovalle went viral on social media this year with a so-called 'scorpion kick' goal, only facing away from the net, in a Tigres match against Guadalajara.

UFC signs top Canadian prospect for Vancouver showdown
Melissa Croden's UFC debut will be a homecoming of sorts. The Canadian LFA standout has signed with the UFC and will debut Oct. 18 at UFC Fight Night 262 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver against Tainara Lisboa. Two people with knowledge of the matchup informed MMA Junkie of the booking Wednesday, but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. Croden (6-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) has emerged as one of the country's top female fighters. She's 4-1 in her most recent five fights, with all wins being finishes. Her only loss in the stretch came to Jacqueline Cavalcanti, who is now in the UFC. Lisboa (7-3 MMA, 2-1 UFC) had a five-fight winning streak snapped in May when she was submitted by Luana Santos. What Canadian Market Should PWHL Expansion Target Next?
Another round of PWHL expansion will come soon. Potentially as soon as following this season. While an American broadcasting deal, and sponsorship dollars in the USA are tremendously important, it's hard to turn down the Canadian markets that have already, and will continue to show incredible support for women's hockey at the box office.
