Gavin Hightower and Maximo Adams lead Sierra Canyon to basketball state title game
The 'James' era at Sierra Canyon is not over quite yet. There is still one game left to be won.
Bryce James, the younger son of Lakers superstar LeBron James, deferred to his teammates for most of Tuesday night's Southern California Regional Division I final, scoring only three points, but Gavin Hightower and Maximo Adams picked up the slack, finishing with 25 ands 22, respectively, in a 74-68 victory over visiting Redondo Union in Chatsworth.
Like the teams' first encounter in pool play of the Southern Section Open Division playoffs on Feb. 12, which the Trailblazers won by three in overtime, the talented rosters full of four- and five-star recruits traded baskets until the final minute. Hightower leaped high to rebound a missed Adams jumper, whirled and made a layup while being fouled to put the top seed ahead, 69-68, with 49 seconds left. He made the free throw to make it a two-point game and Redondo never scored again.
The game not only featured many of the finest basketball players in California, it also saw two of the state's winningest coaches matching wits in Redondo Union's Reggie Morris and Sierra Canyon's Andre Chevalier, who got a big hug from Adams when the buzzer sounded.
'This year's been a long road with lots injuries and lots of ups and downs,' said Chevalier, who has guided the Trailblazers to their first regional crown since 2020, when Bryce's older brother Bronny was on the squad. The state finals were canceled that season because of the COVID-19 outbreak, so Bryce and company have a chance to finish the job this time around. 'Reggie's an absolutely amazing coach and an even better man. He gave us a different look tonight, which I knew he would, and we had to adjust.'
An Arizona commit, Bryce took pictures with fans while hugging the regional hardware.
'He had the love of his brother holding up the trophy with him and that was beautiful to see,' Chevalier said.
Sierra Canyon (26-7) plays Stockton Lincoln (31-4), the Northern California champion, Friday at 8 p.m. at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.
'Man, I've never won [the title] so I want to put a banner in the gym,' Hightower said. 'God's given us the opportunity. Bryce is a key piece to our team, but we all love each other. We don't care who scores more points.'
The third-seeded Seahawks (28-6) controlled the first half before Stephen Kankole's three-pointer with 25 seconds left gave Sierra Canyon its first lead, 37-35. Bryce Cofield added 14 points for the Trailblazers and Hudson Mayes scored 19 for Redondo, which finished 14-of-15 at the foul line.
'It was a great team win,' Adams said. 'We fought to the end. I wasn't aggressive enough last time we played them. Now it's about staying locked in for Friday. The job's not done.'

Rangers in ‘advanced' trade talks to send Chris Kreider to Ducks
Access the Rangers beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Mollie Walker about the inside buzz on the Rangers. tRY IT NOW Chris Kreider might have played his last game with the Rangers. The Rangers are in 'advanced' talks to trade the 13-year veteran to the Ducks, NHL insider Frank Seravalli reported Tuesday. Advertisement A deal is not yet completed and discussions are expected to continue into Wednesday. Lohud reported that a 'framework' for a trade exists that would send a prospect and a draft pick from Anaheim, while the Ducks would cover Kreider's $6.5 million average annual value. The winger, who has a 15-team no-trade list, is under contract for this season and next. Advertisement Back spasms and a 'weird illness' that caused vertigo limited Kreider to 68 games in 2024-25, and his 30 points (22 goals, eight assists) marked his lowest season output since the COVID-shortened 2020-21 campaign. This past season also saw Kreider, 34, get listed in a league-wide memo in November as general manager Chris Drury sought potential trade partners. Chris Kreider has played all 13 years of his career with the Rangers. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post At the end of April, Kreider said how much playing in New York meant to him and he hoped to help the Rangers turn things around after missing the playoffs this season. Advertisement 'I mean, this is home for me,' Kreider said. 'This is the organization that gave me an opportunity to live out my dream. I've developed so many incredible relationships and grown up and spent so much time in this area. So, obviously, this is where I want to be and this is the group I want to help in whatever fashion and win hockey games.' Rangers left wing Chris Kreider skates during a game against the Bruins on Jan. 2, 2025. JASON SZENES FOR THE NEW YORK POST Kreider, who has scored at least 30 goals three times, ranks in the top 10 in a slew of Rangers lists, with his 326 goals ranking third and 582 points ranking 10th in franchise history.

Old-Timers' Day returns to field with Yankees softball makeover
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — This year's Old-Timers' Day will actually feature a game at Yankee Stadium. It won't be baseball, as it once was, but a group of retired Yankees will participate in a softball game this August, The Post confirmed, after the Old-Timers' Day game had been replaced in recent years by a Q&A. NJ Advance Media was first to report the plan for a softball exhibition. Members of the 2009 World Series team pose on the field with a World Series trophy during Old Timer's Day before a game against the Colorado Rockies, Saturday, Aug. 24, 2024. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST The last time the Yankees held a game for Old-Timers' Day was in 2019, before the exhibition was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID. There were too many players dealing with injuries for a game to happen in 2022 and then the organization held Q&As the past two years — honoring the 25th anniversary of the 1998 World Series team in 2023 and the 15th anniversary of the 2009 championship in 2024. CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND YANKEES STATS The Yankees have not yet released a list of players expected to play in the game or attend Old-Timers' Day, though that typically happens closer to the event. It remains to be seen whether Derek Jeter would play in a softball game, as the former captain has said he would not play in an Old-Timers' Day game. Yankees greats Jorge Posada, Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera, and Derek Jeter line up for the National Anthem during Old Timer's Day in 2024. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST 'They're not gonna see me hit again,' Jeter said last August. 'No, I would be afraid I would hurt myself. But that's not saying the reason there's no game is because I'm not playing.

LeBron James: 2020 NBA Playoffs were the 'purest form of hoops'
LeBron James: 2020 NBA Playoffs were the 'purest form of hoops' The Los Angeles Lakers' 2020 NBA championship has been derided by many people as not a legitimate championship because of the fact that it was won inside of the Walt Disney World Resort bubble during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to critics and cynics, since there were no fans and no travel, it cannot count as a legitimate championship. However, that postseason was a big challenge in other ways, mainly because of the stringent safety restrictions that were imposed on everyone who participated. It amounted to up to three months of full and total focus on playoff basketball. LeBron James, who won his fourth ring that year, expanded on the type of focus that was required during that time during a recent episode of his "Mind the Game" podcast. "I agree with what a lot of people say that it's the purest form of hoops," James said. "It was strictly basketball. We all have the ability to do whatever we want in life. We've made a bunch of money, we have all the access. That's gone in the bubble. You can't just say, 'oh, I'm about to go to a restaurant or I'm about to do this.' You can't do none of that. Everything in the bubble was strictly about basketball. And obviously we were there talking about a lot of off-the-court things that were going on, the social injustice and police brutality and all that stuff, rightfully so. But when the basketball portion was the focus, that's all it was. Of all my championships I've won, that level of focus, how long can you maintain your focus in order to get the job done? Because you have all the reasons if you want to get out of focus because you're so accustomed to a certain lifestyle that you're like, 'to hell with this, I don't wanna do this, why am I here? I don't want to be a part of this, I can't get a certain meal, I can't do this, I can't see my family, I can't lock in…' And you can very easily get out of why you're there." The 2019-20 season was initially suspended in March once the pandemic started to hit critical mass. When the bubble was announced, many were skeptical that it would work and that the coronavirus would be prevented from spreading inside of it. But thanks to those stringent restrictions, which included restrictions on family members getting it, it was a huge success. In particular, it was a huge success for the Lakers, who continued to prove they were the best team in basketball that year by bringing home the world championship.
