Lawo to unveil cutting-edge broadcast innovations at IBC 2025

At this year's International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam, taking place from September 12 to 15, Lawo is reaffirming its status as a major player in IP-native broadcast infrastructure and media production solutions. The company will be showcasing a suite of next-generation technologies focused on software-defined workflows, cloud-ready architecture and flexible deployment models, enabling broadcasters to create agile, scalable and highly efficient production environments.
Key highlights include the European debut of Lawo's implementation of the European Broadcasting Union's (EBU) Dynamic Media Facility (DMF) initiative. This dynamic installation leverages a generic server cluster and Lawo's HOME Apps, with setup changes triggered via buzzer-style buttons, offering an interactive demonstration of agile media infrastructure and VSM workflow control.
Lawo is also launching HOME 4.0, a major upgrade to its IP-native management platform. This latest version introduces architectural refinements and a simplified licensing model through HOME Passes, which are required only for actively managed devices or apps. While the platform itself is free, broadcasters can choose between perpetual licenses or flexible subscription options, allowing infrastructure to grow alongside operational needs. New Lawo devices will include the necessary passes, and existing users have access to a streamlined upgrade path.
The .edge platform has also received a significant update with system software v3.2, offering 11 selectable firmware images and enhanced processing features such as JPEG-XS encoding, SDI<>IP conversion, frame synchronization, and UHD Gearboxing. With the highest 3G port density per rack unit in the industry, .edge now supports advanced multiviewer functionality through the HOME Multiviewer app, optimising video feeds with intelligent resolution scaling.
In a move toward greater accessibility, Lawo has introduced Lawo Workspaces—HTML5-native, browser-based user interfaces for the HOME ecosystem. This innovation allows users to operate professional broadcast tools from any modern device, including laptops, tablets, smartphones or AR headsets. Security is fully handled by the HOME framework, making these interfaces suitable for distributed or hybrid production environments.
Lawo also announced the official release of the HOME Power Core app, a virtualised version of its DSP engine for radio broadcasting. Designed to run on standard servers, the app mirrors the capabilities of the hardware Power Core unit and supports a wide range of protocols including RAVENNA/AES67, ST2110 and future additions like Dante, NDI and SRT. Available in multiple instance sizes, the app provides flexible deployment options for radio workflows, talk shows, and live webcasts, with seamless integration into Lawo's mixing consoles and stageboxes.
Further demonstrating its commitment to continuous innovation, Lawo emphasised that its HOME Apps are updated almost monthly. These microservice-based tools are optimised for increasingly powerful servers and high-throughput network fabrics, supporting up to 400Gbps connections.
Software enhancements to Lawo's mc² audio consoles are also being revealed at IBC. Version 12.2.0 introduces tighter integration with VSM through the HOME API, improved display management with customisable Mini Displays, and a new standard 7-Band EQ module featuring three dynamic bands. Operators also benefit from enhanced control via fader user buttons for faster access to banks and layers.
Meanwhile, the new Radio 8.2 software release brings significant improvements for radio broadcasters, including support for 96kHz processing through the XL License and updated compressor functionality with both automatic and manual modes. Enhancements to Lawo's VisTool software include faster configuration options, improved touch response, and better visual feedback, all of which contribute to a more ergonomic and efficient studio environment.
With its extensive portfolio of software and hardware innovations on display, Lawo is offering IBC visitors a comprehensive look at the future of media infrastructure and production—designed to meet the evolving needs of broadcasters around the world.

IBC has revealed the finalists for the IBC2025 Innovation Awards, spotlighting collaborative projects that tackle real-world challenges and drive progress in the global media, entertainment and technology sectors. These awards are organised into five distinct categories: Content Creation, Content Distribution, Content Everywhere, Social Impact and Environment & Sustainability. Together, they showcase both technical innovation and societal contribution in a single celebration of industry achievement. Fergal Ringrose, Chair of the 2025 Innovation Awards Jury, said: 'We are very grateful indeed to our panel of judges for their wisdom and insight in choosing our shortlists as the standard of entries, from all around the globe, was so consistently high this year. Innovation never sleeps, and this year we can clearly see an evolution away from technology lurches enforced by the COVID-19 pandemic period towards greater refinement of innovation across the electronic media content creation, distribution and consumption ecosystem, often driven by advancing AI, hybrid and cloud-enhanced workflows.' In the Content Creation category, the finalists include MBC's collaboration with Pixtree and SK Telecom on AI-assisted video remastering for Korean broadcast content; NBC Olympics' IP-based editorial multiviewer system for gymnastics coverage at Paris 2024 developed with Avid, EVS, and NEP; and NHK Japan's 'Deep Ocean: Kingdom of the Coelacanth,' a 8K underwater documentary produced with ZDF/ARTE, OceanX, and others. For Content Distribution, standout nominees include the global live-streaming of the Crunchyroll Anime Awards, produced with the support of Amagi, AWS, Bridge Digital, and Pixelogic; Sky Group's MediaMesh, a cloud-native broadcast transformation project in partnership with AWS, SDVI, Telestream, and TMT Insights; and Olympic Broadcasting Services' hybrid streaming delivery platform for Paris 2024, developed with Alibaba Cloud. In the Content Everywhere category, Claro's innovative football viewing solution integrates a team-logo button on the remote control to connect users directly to live matches, with technical backing from Gracenote and Teleidea Middleware. Also recognised are the Alliance for Open Media, Intel, and Meta's SVT-AV1 encoder, which enables efficient streaming on low-spec mobile devices; and Pilipinas Live Shorts by Cignal, which uses AI from Quickplay Shorts and Twelve Labs to auto-generate and integrate user-generated content into vertical scroll feeds. The Social Impact category highlights initiatives with tangible benefits to society, including the Media Talent Manifesto's neurodiversity mentoring programme backed by Deluxe, Molinare, and Vizrt; SOUV by SNEWS, enabling remote Amazonian communities to share news content in partnership with Rede Amazônica; the Mobile Justice app, developed with the American Civil Liberties Union and powered by Jotto, Quadrant2, and Wowza, which empowers citizens to document law enforcement interactions; and France Télévisions' pioneering use of C2PA content authentication in daily journalism, developed with Dalet. In Environment & Sustainability, finalists include Nanlux's Evoke 5000B, a highly efficient lighting fixture that offers 75% energy savings compared to traditional tungsten lights; SK Telecom and Pixtree's energy-efficient UHD upscaling solution for IPTV, which supports 6.7 million subscribers and drastically cuts carbon emissions; and Germany's Green Film Shooting initiative, which promotes sustainable practices across the film and media industries. The winners of the IBC2025 Innovation Awards will be announced during a live ceremony at 18:00 CEST on Sunday, 14 September, on the main stage of the IBC Conference in Amsterdam. The event will also include the presentation of the IBC International Honour for Excellence, awarded for outstanding contributions to the industry, and the Best Technical Paper, selected from peer-reviewed research shared during the IBC Conference from 12–14 September.

Tata Motors to buy Italy's Iveco for $4.4bn

ROME (AFP) Tata Motors of India will buy Italy's Iveco Group for 3.8 billion euros ($4.4 billion) in a bid to create a "global champion" in the commercial vehicles sector, the two companies said Wednesday. The deal excludes Iveco's defence division for armoured vehicles, which is to be sold to Italian defence and aerospace group Leonardo, in a 1.7-billion-euro deal announced earlier Wednesday. The combined company after Tata's takeover aims to sell around 540,000 vehicles a year for total annual revenues of 22 billion euros, of which half would come from Europe, 35 percent from India and 15 percent from the Americas. Tata and Iveco -- which also makes engines and buses -- said in a joint statement there was "no overlap in their industrial and geographic footprints, creating a stronger, more diversified entity" which would use a shared strategic vision to drive long-term growth. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2026, underscoring the status of Tata in Europe, with Jaguar Land Rover notably a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Motors. "The reinforced prospects of the new combination are strongly positive in terms of the security of employment and industrial footprint of Iveco Group as a whole," Iveco's chairwoman Suzanne Heywood said in the statement. For Natarajan Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Motors, "this is a logical next step following the demerger of the Tata Motors Commercial Vehicle business, and will allow the combined group to compete on a truly global basis with two strategic home markets in India and Europe. "The combined group's complementary businesses and greater reach will enhance our ability to invest boldly. I look forward to securing the necessary approvals and concluding the transaction in the coming months," he added in the statement. Iveco Group's CEO Olof Persson said the merger was "unlocking new potential to further enhance our industrial capabilities, accelerate innovation in zero-emission transport, and expand our reach in key global markets." He added: "This combination will allow us to better serve our customers with a broader, more advanced product portfolio and deliver long-term value to all stakeholders." Separately, Iveco's armoured vehicles unit will be sold to Leonardo, whose chief Roberto Cingolani said the move would make it a "reference player in the European land defence market". Leonardo has announced it plans to integrate its electronic systems, including new-generation combat sensors, into Iveco Defence vehicles to "guarantee optimal effectiveness of operational solutions offered".

WASHINGTON: The United States will impose a 25% tariff on goods from India, plus an additional import tax because of India's purchasing of Russian oil, President Donald Trump said Wednesday. India "is our friend,' Trump said on his Truth Social platform, but its tariffs "are far too high' on US products. The Republican president added India buys military equipment and oil from Russia, enabling Moscow's war in Ukraine. As a result, he intends to charge an additional "penalty' starting on Friday as part of the launch of his administration's revised tariffs on multiple countries. The Indian government said Wednesday it's studying the implications of Trump's tariffs announcement. India and the US have been engaged in negotiations on concluding a "fair, balanced and mutually beneficial' bilateral trade agreement over the last few months, and New Delhi remains committed to that objective, India's Trade Ministry said in a statement. Trump's announcement comes after a slew of negotiated trade frameworks with the European Union, Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia - all of which he said would open markets for American goods while enabling the US to raise tax rates on imports. The president views tariff revenues as a way to help offset the budget deficit increases tied to his recent income tax cuts and generate more domestic factory jobs. While Trump has effectively wielded tariffs as a cudgel to reset the terms of trade, the economic impact is uncertain as most economists expect a slowdown in US growth and greater inflationary pressures as some of the costs of the taxes are passed along to domestic businesses and consumers. There's also the possibility of more tariffs coming on trade partners with Russia as well as on pharmaceutical drugs and computer chips. Kevin Hassett, director of the White House National Economic Council, said Trump and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer would announce the Russia-related tariff rates on India at a later date. Trump's approach of putting a 15% tariff on America's long-standing allies in the EU is also generating pushback, possibly causing European partners as well as Canada to seek alternatives to US leadership on the world stage. French President Emmanuel Macron said Wednesday in the aftermath of the trade framework that Europe "does not see itself sufficiently' as a global power, saying in a cabinet meeting that negotiations with the US will continue as the agreement gets formalized. "To be free, you have to be feared,' Macron said. "We have not been feared enough. There is a greater urgency than ever to accelerate the European agenda for sovereignty and competitiveness.' Washington has long sought to develop a deeper partnership with New Delhi, which is seen as a bulwark against China. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has established a good working relationship with Trump, and the two leaders are likely to further boost cooperation between their countries. The Census Bureau reported that the US ran a $45.8 billion trade imbalance in goods with India last year, meaning it imported more than it exported. At a population exceeding 1.4 billion people, India is the world's largest country and a possible geopolitical counterbalance to China. India and Russia have close relations, and New Delhi has not supported Western sanctions on Moscow over its war in Ukraine. The new tariffs could put India at a disadvantage in the US market relative to Vietnam, Bangladesh and, possibly, China, said Ajay Sahai, director general of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations. "We are back to square one as Trump hasn't spelled out what the penalties would be in addition to the tariff,' Sahai said. "The demand for Indian goods is bound to be hit.' The new tariffs on India could complicate its goal of doubling bilateral trade with the US to $500 billion by 2030. The two countries have had five rounds of negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement. While US has been seeking greater market access and zero tariff on almost all its exports, India has expressed reservations on throwing open sectors such as agriculture and dairy, which employ a bulk of the country's population for livelihood, Indian officials said. When Trump in February met with Modi, the US president said that India would start buying American oil and natural gas. Trump discussed his policies on trade and tariffs with reporters accompanying him Tuesday on the flight home following a five-day visit to Scotland. He declined to comment then when asked about reports that India was bracing for a US tariff rate of at least 25%, saying, "We're going to see.' Trump also said the outlines of a trade framework with India had not yet been finalized. Once back at the White House on Tuesday, Trump indicated that there were no plans to announce new tariff rates on Wednesday, a claim that turned out to be inaccurate. Agencies
