Buckinghamshire company hopes Star Wars lightsaber will fetch $3m

BBC News21 hours ago
A lightsaber used by Darth Vader in the original Star Wars films could fetch up to $3m (£2.25m) when it goes up for auction.Auctioneer Propstore, based in Chenies, Buckinghamshire, said the movie relic will be on offer in a live sale in Los Angeles between 4 and 6 September. The weapon - which featured in films The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi - is estimated to go for at least $1m (£750,000) and could be snapped up for three times that figure.Brandon Alinger, Propstore's chief operating officer, said: "This is the first time that an authentic, screen-matched lightsaber has come to public auction and represents an incredible opportunity for serious collectors and film fans."
The prop was used during extensive filming at Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire but has been in the US for many years, Mr Alinger said.He added the laser-sword weapon will be returning to the UK for the first time this August as part of a public exhibition. The auctioneer's previous highest seller was a $1.9m (£1.4m) hammer price for an original X-wing fighter model in 2022.Mr Alinger described the lightsaber as "one of the most recognised props in the history of film".He said: "There are a small number of other genuine lightsabers in private collections; there are two other known hero-quality lightsabers – a hilt used by Luke Skywalker, and a hilt used by Darth Vader."These pieces are known to exist amongst the collecting community but have never come to public auction."
Although the auction is taking place in California, many of the lots are from UK productions, including the Star Was prop, used on set at Elstree Studios.Elstree was also the studio used for 1989 film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.A bullwhip, belt and holster made for Harrison Ford is also up for auction and estimated to get between $250,000 (£186,567) and $500,000 (£373,134).A Batman costume from the Michael Keaton film released in the same year, shot at nearby Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, carries the same estimate.Filming has already started on a new Harry Potter reboot at Warner Bros Leavesden, but a Platform 9 3/4 sign used in several of the original films could get between $20,000 (£14,925) and $40,000 (£29,850).Some television memorabilia is also available: a flute from popular Star Trek: The Next Generation episode The Inner Light is expected to fetch between $250,000 (£186,567) and $500,000 (£373,134).
Mr Alinger added: "We've assembled one of the most impressive selections of authentic props and costumes ever brought to market."Whether it's the craftsmanship of an original Batsuit [or] the power of a Star Wars lightsaber, each item tells a story. "We're proud to offer this exceptional collection and to give collectors and fans a rare opportunity to claim a tangible piece of the films and shows that shaped our imaginations."

EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: Why Alison can no longer cast Sussexes' lookalikes...

Bafta-winning photographer Alison Jackson – who specialises in amusing images featuring lookalikes of the rich, famous and powerful – is planning to stage a show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival later this month. She has, however, encountered a serious problem. The show was due to include doppelgangers of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, but Jackson has failed to cast actors to play them with little more than a fortnight until the curtain goes up. 'I have a couple of 'Prince Williams' who've come forward and they look quite good, but no 'Meghan' or 'Harry' has turned up,' she tells me. The artist, 65, claims this is because the Sussexes have become such toxic figures that no one wants to play them. 'I think that people don't like Meghan, they don't trust her and they think she's an operator who sucks everything she can out of Harry,' Jackson claims. She explains that her lookalikes 'tend to relate to' the person they are playing. Jackson blames Harry's explosive interview with the BBC in May after he lost a legal challenge over his taxpayer-funded security in Britain. The California-based prince said the King 'won't speak to me because of this security stuff', but that he did not want to fight any more and did 'not know how much longer my father has'. Jackson tells me: 'He's gone too far, because every time he does a TV interview he takes some dig at King Charles, which is below the belt and beyond the pale and people don't like it. He implied that his father might die.' She previously had lookalikes of Harry, 40, and Meghan, who turned 44 yesterday, but says 'they now won't come forward'. Jackson adds: 'As Meghan gets more and more assertive, the lookalikes disappear. They've probably all cut their hair short and look different.' It will be a case of On His Majesty's Secret Service! King Charles is seeking a £55,000-a-year security head to vet his own staff. The successful candidate must identify any security risks among workers. An advert says the 'senior personnel security manager' will be based at Buckingham Palace, but will oversee 'security services across multiple royal residences'. Love is in the air for Lord Brocket's son At 6ft 8in, William Nall-Cain was always going to find it a tall order to choose a bride who could measure up to him. Happily, the son of former I'm A Celebrity star Lord Brocket has met his match in Christy Boulet, a lawyer from Puerto Rico where his mother, former model Isabel Lorenzo Brocket, was also born. In a picture posted online, William, 34, towers over his new wife at their wedding in the Caribbean island's capital, San Juan. 'There is no one else on this planet who makes me feel like anything in this life is possible, and like the luckiest man alive,' William has said of his bride. Earlier this year, I disclosed that his sister, Antalya, had separated from her husband, Prince Alexander von Preussen, less than five years after their wedding near Brocket Hall, her ancestral home in Hertfordshire. Sir Grayson's all fired up He made his name with ceramics depicting child abuse and sado-masochism before being embraced by the Establishment. And Sir Grayson Perry is sick of rich and famous Leftie-types posing as revolutionaries. 'One of the things that absolutely infuriates me is millionaire cultural celebrities pretending they're outsider rebels,' declares the cross-dressing potter, 65. Who's in the Spice Girls' group chat? The Spice Girls once sang that 'friendship never ends', but it can clearly become strained over time. Melanie Chisholm, aka Sporty Spice, has revealed Victoria Beckham and Geri Halliwell are excluded from some of their WhatsApp chat groups. 'There are subgroups within the group,' Mel C admits in an interview Down Under. 'I definitely know there is a chat group that doesn't contain me, but somewhere else we keep Ginger or Posh out. Like all friendship groups, we have many ways of communicating.' Chisholm, 51, who was the only one of the four other Spice Girls to attend Mel B's second wedding to Rory McPhee in Morocco at the weekend, also admits she regrets not holding on to her outfits from the pop group's heyday. Julie dresses as she likes it for birthday bash Usually seen wearing Lycra while performing yoga poses at her husband's Mapperton estate in Dorset, the Countess of Sandwich opted for a medieval look at a fellow aristocrat's ancestral home at the weekend. American-born Julie Montagu, 51, wore a red velvet gown for the Earl of Devon's fancy dress birthday party at Powderham Castle near Exeter. The bash had Shakespeare's pastoral comedy As You Like It for its theme. 'I took it very seriously,' the countess says. She and her husband, Luke, the 12th Earl of Sandwich, have been running the family's Mapperton estate since 2016, with wellness retreats among her initiatives. A qualified yoga instructor, Julie, became the Countess of Sandwich after the death of her father-in-law, 81, in February. Kirstie's parenting hoo-haa Location, Location, Location star Kirstie Allsopp is aghast at a sorry display of modern parenting. 'I'm staying in a hotel in Switzerland, just had breakfast next to an English couple with one child, probably aged five,' says the television presenter, 53. 'He ate his breakfast watching an iPad on the table in front of him,' the presenter complains on X. She goes on to ask her 431,800 followers: 'When are people going to wake up to how wrong this is?' Kirstie, who has two teenage sons with her husband, property developer Ben Andersen, as well as two adult stepsons, adds: 'This is absurd. If they can't be bothered to engage their child in conversation at the table when they don't have to cook or wash up, then what hope is there?' Her comments prompted a mixed response online, with some parents and teachers noting the 'damage' caused to children by excessive screen time. Others were less sympathetic, prompting Kirstie to respond: 'It's quite interesting to note that the vast majority of abuse is from men.'

Johnny Vegas admits he had a 'meltdown' amid his ADHD battle as he reflects on the 'most difficult part of his life' and what saved him

has admitted he had a 'meltdown' amid his ADHD battle as the comedian, 54, opened up about the most challenging year of his life. The actor and comedian's upcoming two-part Channel 4 show sees him create a piece of art for his hometown, St. Helens, in Merseyside. However during filming, the star was rocked by a shock health diagnosis as he discovered he had ADHD. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a behavioural condition defined by inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness. And now Johnny has opened up about the 'most difficult time of his life' and how his art saved him. He told The Mirror: 'I went into meltdown, I couldn't function. It seemed insurmountable. I had to get professional help. This has been the most difficult part of my life. But the art saved me.' Explaining how the noise in his brain stops when he is working on his art he continued: 'With ADHD, when everyone else is going to bed, my brain goes, "It's just you and me now". 'It lives to work against you. But the one time the white noise stops, the one time I can focus, the one time that having ADHD is good for you is art. The world makes sense when I am working on my art.' Johnny took a year off work amid his health battle before he returned for his debut art exhibition. His new documentary, titled Johnny Vegas: Art, ADHD and Me, will see the star embark on a 'creative endeavour' that ends up being a 'journey of self-discovery'. The documentary delves into 'an honest and heartfelt conversation about mental health and understanding yourself'. Previously speaking about the new show, Johnny revealed he was once a 'dedicated wannabe ceramicist'. He said: 'I used to sit at a potter's wheel on stage. People thought it was a gimmick but I actually started out as a dedicated wannabe ceramicist. 'Art was my educational saviour. Over years of witnessing what felt like an ongoing decline in educational commitment to the very same arts I felt it was time I threw my hat back into the ring. 'To kickstart a debate about culture in general, whilst giving something of a visual a symbol of gratitude back to my honestly beloved town.' Channel 4 boss Shaminder Nahal revealed the documentary had been filmed over years and added: 'This series brings to life the power of art for everyone – how it can soothe, help, energise and inspire. 'Beautifully filmed over several years by Eddie Stafford, the series showcases Johnny's unique humour, heart and passion – uncovering the intricacies and demands of artistic process along the way. 'It's an enlightening, eye-opening and emotional journey.' WHAT IS ADHD? Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a behavioural condition defined by inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness. It affects around five per cent of children in the US. Some 3.6 per cent of boys and 0.85 per cent of girls suffer in the UK. Symptoms typically appear at an early age and become more noticeable as a child grows. These can also include: Constant fidgeting Poor concentration Excessive movement or talking Acting without thinking Inability to deal with stress Little or no sense of danger Careless mistakes Mood swings Forgetfulness Difficulty organising tasks Continually starting new tasks before finishing old ones Inability to listen or carry out instructions Most cases are diagnosed between six and 12 years old. Adults can also suffer, but there is less research into this. ADHD's exact cause is unclear but is thought to involve genetic mutations that affect a person's brain function and structure. Premature babies and those with epilepsy or brain damage are more at risk. ADHD is also linked to anxiety, depression, insomnia, Tourette's and epilepsy. There is no cure. A combination of medication and therapy is usually recommended to relieve symptoms and make day-to-day life easier.

Love Island final descends into chaos as islanders Tommy and Ben admit to kissing the SAME girl at recent event in shock confession

The Love Island Final descended into chaos on Monday evening after two of the past male islanders admitted to kissing the same girl during a club appearance. As Maya Jama was joined by a host of former islanders, Tommy held his hands up as he admitted his relationship with Lucy was over after his recent antics. Speaking candidly Tommy confessed: 'I'll hold my hands up it was my fault. 'I was at an event, and I had about five Blue Lagoon cocktails... and there was this girl..' As the cast and crowd exclaimed Tommy admitted he had shared a kiss with the girl at the event. However he wasn't the only one as Ben also revealed he had shared a kiss at the same event... and it transpired it was the same girl. While Lucy seemed less annoyed as she explained her and Tommy weren't exclusive, Andrada was less than impressed with her man's behaviour. Fans were furious as they took to Twitter to share their anger at the boys actions. They penned: 'ben & tommy both making out with the same girl at the same event. literally thee worst group of men ever casted'; 'Whoever was the girl who got with Tommy and Ben, need to get her a love island contest asap lol'; 'tommy and ben both kissing the same girl a week after being out the villa… please stop letting these men into the villa'; 'Tommy and Ben?? The same girl???'; 'I wanna know who the girl was that kissed Tommy and Ben at that event'; 'Tommy and Ben both kissing the same girl at this event has me screaming I need to know who she is!' Toni and Cach were crowned the winners of Love Island as this year's series drew to a close on Monday evening. The pair beat Harry and Shakira to first place in one of the most dramatic summer's of the ITV reality show. Toni has made history as the first American contestant to enter the UK Love Island villa and her and Cach seem set on making their relationship work despite the transatlantic distance. Meanwhile Angel and Ty finished in fourth after receiving the fewest public votes, with Yasmin and Jamie finishing in third. Toni and Cach had a rocky beginning after meeting during Casa Amor. However it wasn't long until the pair found themselves in a major love triangle with Harrison in a dramatic week. Yet once Harrison decided to leave the villa with Lauren, Toni set her sights on Cach and the pair have gone from strength to strength. Toni and Cach won despite the bookies odds revealing it was Harry and Shakira in the running to win, just hour ahead of the live final.
