Crackdown Continues As 92 Sanitation Staff Penalised For Absenteeism
Nagpur: Under fire for its visibly collapsing sanitation system, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) penalised 92 more sanitation workers on Tuesday, the second day of its ongoing crackdown on absenteeism.
Despite maintaining a workforce of over 7,000 sanitary workers, piles of garbage continue to line roadsides and remain unattended in several areas across the city. Blaming on-ground workers for the deteriorating civic hygiene, the NMC has launched a series of surprise inspections to identify workers skipping duty without prior information.
On Tuesday morning, a team led by additional municipal commissioner Vasumana Pant conducted checks at the Chitnis Park attendance stand in Prabhag 19 (Gandhibagh zone).
Pant found 82 workers absent without any sanctioned leave.
In a follow-up inspection at Prabhag 36 in the Laxmi Nagar zone, 10 more workers were found absent, again without prior intimation. Terming it "gross negligence," Pant ordered a fine of ₹1,000 and a half-day salary cut for each of the 92 workers. Officials have also been directed to issue stern warnings and ensure such dereliction is not repeated.
Despite having thousands of sanitation workers on its payroll, the civic body's performance in maintaining cleanliness has declined steadily.

Nagpur's Swachh Bharat ranking has slipped in recent years, reflecting public frustration and the sanitation department's perceived apathy.
Pant, who recently took charge as additional municipal commissioner, has initiated a series of ground-level inspections to reverse this trend. On Monday, 42 workers in the Laxmi Nagar zone were similarly penalised after being found absent during a surprise inspection.
At Gandhibagh, Pant was accompanied by sanitation inspector Roshan Nanetkar and jamadar Ganesh Gravkar. Officials said 12 workers had submitted leave requests, but verification of approval was still pending. In Laxmi Nagar, where Pant was joined by inspector Dinkar Gajbhiye and jamadars Nisar Sheikh and Satish Malik, seven workers have reportedly applied for leave, and inquiries have been initiated to confirm whether due process was followed.
Deputy municipal commissioner Rajesh Bhagat said a detailed report has been sought on both inspections.
Meanwhile, residents from Mangalwari, Ashi Nagar, Satranjipura, and Lakadganj zones have demanded similar surprise checks in their areas. "It's high time the administration stops relying on paper records and sees the ground reality," said a resident from Satranjipura.

Delhi jeweller held in digital arrest scam
Noida: A Delhi jeweller, allegedly a part of a cyber fraud gang that cheated a woman of Rs 50 lakh by posing as officials from law enforcement and govt agencies, was arrested Tuesday. The accused, Sumit, was arrested from his home in Civil Lines on Tuesday. He was allegedly a part of a well-oiled network that intimidated people by impersonating officials from the telecom department, police and CBI. On May 26, a Noida resident lodged a complaint at the Cyber Crime police station, stating she was contacted by people who claimed she was under investigation for money laundering. Using spoofed calls, fake identity badges, and fabricated documents, including an arrest warrant, the fraudsters coerced her into transferring Rs 50 lakh for "verification" purposes. She was told the money would be returned after the probe, but the fraudsters broke all contact after receiving the funds. ACP (Cyber) Vivek Ranjan Rai said the name of Sumit emerged during the investigation. A previous arrest in the case helped police trace him to Delhi. He was taken into custody following a tip-off and confessed to having helped open bank accounts in Yes Bank and Bank of Baroda, where Rs 18 lakh from the defrauded amount was deposited and withdrawn. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Sumit also provided police with leads on other operatives. One of his associates had been arrested earlier on June 3. According to additional DCP Cyber Manisha Singh, Rs 2.57 lakh of the stolen amount has been frozen so far. Sumit, who works at an artificial jewellery shop, allegedly joined the fraud network a few months ago. Checks on the NCRP portal revealed two previous complaints registered against accounts he had opened—one in Uttar Pradesh and another in Maharashtra. Police believe the fraud was orchestrated by a mastermind operating from outside India. The gang used Indian bank accounts rented for commission to move the money, which was later converted into cryptocurrency or gift cards. SIM cards procured using fake documents were used to mask their identities. Officials say more arrests are likely soon as the probe widens.

Gang rape at beach throws spotlight on tourist police cell infra, staff shortage
1 2 3 Bhubaneswar: The gang rape of a 20-year-old college student on a beach in Ganjam district on Sunday has raised questions about the effectiveness of tourist police cells in ensuring safety of visitors. Eight tourist police cells were set up in 2015 in various locations — three in Bhubaneswar (at Lingaraj, Dhauli and Nandankanan police stations), three in Puri (at Sea Beach, Konark and Brahmagiri police stations), and one each at Gopalpur and Chandipur police stations. The cells are facing challenges in effective functioning due to inadequate infrastructure and staff shortage, operating with existing police station personnel. "While each cell has a sanctioned strength of at least a sub-inspector, an assistant SI and six constables, they are running with half the number. Even though they are supposed to deal with tourist related matters, these personnel are being engaged in routine policing job," said a police officer, requesting anonymity. The cells largely handle complaints about theft and robbery of tourist belongings, with additional reports of tourist harassment in Puri and Bhubaneswar. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Tourism secretary Balwant Singh told TOI, "We previously sent a proposal to the home department, requesting to strengthen the existing tourist police cells with adequate manpower and other infrastructure. We will again pursue the matter." Sources in the home department said the tourist police cells will be strengthened soon. "Recruitment plans are under consideration of the govt," a home department official said. Deputy chief minister Pravati Parida, who also holds the tourism portfolio, emphasised tourist safety is a priority. "I have already spoken with state police to enhance the safety measures at tourist destinations," Parida said. The Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPR&D) had prepared a 'Tourist Police Scheme' report in 2022, advising states to develop standard operating procedures, implement training for 'tourist cops', and establish uniform guidelines. "We will conduct security audits and training programmes for tourism stakeholders. Proposals will be sent to local administrations to improve lighting systems and install CCTV cameras at popular tourist destinations. We will also improve police visibility and surveillance," a senior police officer said. Police said the state witnesses minimal tourist-related crime. "Molestation of a Swedish woman near Lingaraj Temple in 2024 was the lone case against a foreigner reported in the state in the last four years. The case ended in conviction of the accused within three weeks. The number of offences involving theft and snatching of articles of domestic tourists is minimal," the police officer said. The state received about 1.09 crore domestic and 53,392 foreign tourists in 2024, with Puri, Konark and Chilika lake the key attractions.
