Luke Dennison the hero as Drogheda dump out Derry in FAI Cup
Trio Jamie Stott, Adam Frizzell and Daniel Mullen all missed from the spot, while United's Conor Keeley, Thomas Oluwa and Owen Lambe all fired home from 12 yards.
The defeat will mount serious pressure on Derry boss Tiernan Lynch, as his side's season may fall off a cliff in the run-in.
As for Kevin Doherty's team, they continue to show tremendous spirit and showed great composure in the shoot-out, with young goalkeeper Luke Dennison their hero keeping out Stott and Mullen's spot-kicks.

City made two changes from the side which had a disappointing 0-0 draw with Cork City as Alex Bannon and Dipo Akinyemi came in for Hayden Cann and Liam Boyce, who dropped to the bench.
Derry got off to the worst possible start as they conceded after two minutes when Alex Quinn made no mistake from close range, after Joshua Thomas' left wing cut-back found the unmarked defender inside the six yard box.
Drogheda should have doubled their lead minutes later as Thomas broke the offside trap, but he failed to trouble Derry goalkeeper Brian Maher and blasted wide.
Derry's first chance came on 19 minutes but Gavin Whyte's stinging 20-yard strike was straight at United net-minder Dennison.

Moments later Akinyemi's 20-yard drive, which dipped quickly, was comfortably tipped over by Dennison.
Just before the break a neat passing move by the Foylesiders ended with Michael Duffy's cross finding Brandon Fleming, but the left-wing back's shot from 20 yards flew well over the bar.
City gaffer Lynch made four changes at once on 58 minutes with Ben Doherty, Ronan Boyce, Mullen and Liam Boyce all coming on for Alex Bannon, Brandon Fleming, Sadou Diallo and Whyte.
The changes seemed to spark the home side into life, but Carl Winchester's close-range shot was turned around the post by Dennison.
The United goalkeeper had to make a smart save on 64 minutes when he did well to tip over Liam Boyce's curling effort, after the ex-Cliftonville man had found space inside the penalty box.
Drogheda were inches away from adding a second five minutes later as Darragh Markey's right wing free-kick found Ryan Brennan at the back post, but United skipper's powerful header was outstandingly kept out by a diving Maher.

Derry equalised on 73 minutes in superb fashion as substitute Mullen raced down the right before cutting the ball back to Duffy on the edge of the box, the winger took a touch and unleashed a stunning left-footed strike past Dennison.
The United keeper had to make a big save early in extra-time when he parried away Mullen's powerful long-range strike.
Derry were forced into a change on 102 minutes as Liam Boyce picked up a bad-looking injury and had to be replaced by Sam Todd.
The home side went close to taking the lead on 106 minutes as Duffy's left-wing centre found Ronan Boyce, but defender's powerful header was tipped over the crossbar by a full-stretched Dennison.
Derry thought they had won the encounter on 114 minutes when Mark Connolly had headed home Ben Doherty's corner but referee Robert Harvey cut his celebrations short and disallowed the goal.

A super Stott cross moments later found Duffy, but his glancing header, which had Dennison beaten, flashed just wide.
Derry had strong claims for a penalty deep into stoppage time in extra-time when Duffy was upended inside the box, referee Harvey waved play-on and to make matters worse for the home side, substitute Ben Doherty was shown a straight red card for taking his protests too far.
Derry City: Maher, O'Reilly, Bannon (Doherty 58), Connolly, Stott, Fleming (R Boyce 58); Diallo (L Boyce 58 - Todd 102), Winchester; Whyte (Mullen 58), Duffy; Akinyemi (Frizzell 92).

Watch: Roy Keane and Micah Richards begin new season with heated row over Man United – ‘This is big boys' stuff'
The pair served up one of their pantomime fallouts on Sky Sports' coverage of the opening weekend of the Premier League season as Keane attacked a gaffe from stand-in goalkeeper Altay Bayindir that produced the only goal of the match. The United keeper was unable to deal with a first-half corner under pressure from William Saliba and Riccardo Calafiori nodded in on the line at the far post for what proved to be the only goal. Former United midfielder Keane had no sympathy for the Turk, who appealed for a foul, with the Sky Sports pundit saying: 'He has to come with violence, he's got to be aggressive, he's got to be almost saying to players, 'Come in here, I'm happy to deal with it'. Fellow pundit Richards, though, argued Bayindir should have been better protected by his defence, saying: 'If you look at the balance between Saliba and [Mason] Mount, he's getting ragdolled everywhere. 'I just thought [Matthijs] De Ligt could have come inside and Mount could have gone outside. I agree with Roy, Bayindir should have done a lot better, but when you've got bodies in front of you…' That prompted Keane to interject, with the pair raising their voices to the apparent amusement of fellow pundit Daniel Sturridge. "The goalkeeper's on his heels, he should be on his toes. Saliba's doing very little to him,' retorted Keane. 'The job of that player in that role is to protect the goalkeeper so he can come and punch it,' hit back Richards. 'There's a lot of chaos going on.' Keane had the final word, adding: 'This is big boys' stuff. You can't babysit a goalkeeper. He should go and play chess.' ADVERTISEMENT United dominated the chances but were unable to find an equaliser, and Keane did not share in optimism around the Red Devils' start to the campaign. 'The expectations at United now are so low that even when Gary (Neville) is on commentary, everyone's even comfortable with a 1-0 defeat,' he said. 'United have got to do better. It does worry me. Obviously, a couple of the new signings, a lot of encouragement with that. Getting up the pitch there was a bit more power. 'Obviously results are going to improve, it's always tough against Arsenal, but again no goal, another defeat. There's still problems there with United.' As Sky Sports Soccer Sunday returned, some viewers were startled by the novelty of Arsenal's Martin Odegaard being interviewed at half-time by Patrick Davison. As part of the domestic TV deal worth £6.7bn, broadcasters have been granted more access than ever.

Man Utd told to make transfer move for ‘giant' after Arsenal defeat as Rooney and Neville pinpoint major weakness
MANCHESTER UNITED legends Gary Neville and Wayne Rooney have fired a warning to the club after their opening-day defeat. Both legends didn't hold back after Altay Bayindir's howler gifted Arsenal a 1-0 win at Old Trafford on Sunday. 7 Altay Bayindir was largely impressive but his error led to the Arsenal goal Credit: Shutterstock Editorial 7 Onana has not impressed since joining the club two seasons ago from Inter Milan Credit: Getty 7 Italian Gianluigi Donnarumma has been frozen out at PSG and would want a Prem move Credit: Getty 7 Villa shot stopper Martinez has also been strongly linked to United Credit: Getty The Turkish shot-stopper, surprisingly picked ahead of under-fire No. 1 Andre Onana, completely fluffed Declan Rice's corner, allowing Riccardo Calafiori to nod in from point-blank range. It was a tough pill to swallow after a much-improved display from Ruben Amorim's side against the Gunners. Amorim tried to defend his stopper, insisting he was fouled when Arsenal stars attempted to block him in as the corner was taken. But Neville and Rooney were far from impressed with Bayindir's role in the goal - and told United to must act before the transfer window shuts. Neville named Emiliano Martinez and Gianluigi Donnarumma as the two shot-stoppers who could finally bring some authority to United's six-yard box. Martinez – the World Cup winner and Villa's no-nonsense No. 1 – was linked to Old Trafford earlier this summer, with a £40million price tag slapped on him by Villa Park chiefs. Meanwhile, Donnarumma – frozen out at PSG by Luis Enrique – is desperate for a new home and is keen on a Premier League switch. Speaking on his Sky Sports podcast, Neville fumed:'There's a glaring issue for Manchester United that can't be ignored. They need to find a goalkeeper. They have to.' BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK Neville says the revolving door of keepers since Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar has made United look like a circus at the back. He added:'I'm absolutely unequivocal on that. I had an experience at United for 20 years, where we had big spells with [Peter] Schmeichel and [Edwin] van der Sar, and in between, we had seven or eight other goalkeepers. He's taking lessons from Mikel Arteta' joke fans as Ruben Amorim makes VERY bold claim after Man Utd's loss to Arsenal What did we learn about Man Utd in Arsenal defeat? MANCHESTER UNITED have splashed the cash this summer but that couldn't prevent an opening day home loss to Arsenal. Here are SunSport Manchester United reporter Martin Blackburn's key takeaways from the narrow 1-0 defeat vs the Gunners. No 1 ISSUE UNITED have been linked with Gianluigi Donnarumma and David de Gea in recent weeks, and surely they will sign a keeper before the window shuts. Ruben Amorim has faith in Andre Onana — even if a lot of the fans do not — but he did not consider him ready to start here. The Cameroonian has missed the whole of pre-season with a hamstring injury. So Altay Bayindir, who has played throughout the build-up to the season, got the nod — and ended up costing his team the game. He should have been stronger under pressure from William Saliba and flapped a corner on to the head of Riccardo Calafiori. Bayindir has had problems with set-pieces before. Amorim and sporting director Jason Wilcox have two weeks to come up with a solution before the end of the transfer window. NO GOALS — AGAIN UNITED mustered just 44 goals in the Prem last season — and here they were starting with a blank again. The Red Devils have spent £200million sprucing up their forward line this summer, and there were encouraging signs from Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. But new £74m centre-forward Benjamin Sesko stayed on the bench until the 65th minute. On a couple of occasions before then there were crosses into the box but nobody there to put them away. Amorim said on Friday he believes Sesko can be United's No 9 for many years to come — and that is why they spent so heavily on him. So it seemed a strange call to leave him on the bench for so long. Clearly the fans agreed as he was given a huge ovation when he arrived. A couple of late half-chances went begging but the Slovenian did enough to show he will be a threat. MIDFIELD STILL AN ISSUE UNITED have abandoned their bid to land Carlos Baleba at least until next summer because of Brighton's asking price. There is an interest in Sporting's Morten Hjulmand, while United are one of several clubs who admire Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace. But there is a chance they will not sign another outfield player, and fans will be worried about the options in midfield. Casemiro was excellent in Europe last season but did not have the same impact in Prem matches, while we are still waiting to see the best of Manuel Ugarte. United are going to be more exciting to watch this season — that is clear already — but will they still have a soft centre? "It's really unsettling when you don't have a really dominant No. 1. You need someone to own their six-yard box, to make a lot of saves, to come and punch everything, and save you points when your defenders make mistakes. "That needs to be sorted, either with a permanent signing or a loan. The two that you look at that have been mentioned in the last few weeks are Martinez and Donnarumma. "The reason I say those two would be good for United is not necessarily because they're the two best goalkeepers in Europe, but they've got big personalities and characters. It's really unsettling when you don't have a really dominant No. 1. Gary Neville "You've seen Donnarumma in a Euros final saving those penalties – he looked like a giant, and you've seen him play for PSG in huge games under pressure. "We've seen Martinez play in World Cup finals. They've played under extreme pressure, and they can handle it. "Man United need that, I think they need to sort the goalkeeper out because they will keep conceding goals and points, and it undermines what you're doing. "I've said it for years, you need personality, character, and stability in that position. I think United need to deal with it in the next couple of weeks.' Rooney, speaking on his own podcast, echoed the need to bring in Donnarumma. 7 Sunsport has been told United have had a look at former keeper De Gea this summer Credit: Getty 7 Both Rooney and Neville agree on the goalkeeping situation at the club Credit: Getty 7 He said: 'He (Donnarumma) is only 26, and he's one of the best goalkeepers in the world. "I go back to when we had Roy Carroll and Tim Howard in goal and I don't think there was 100% trust in them from the defenders. "Van der Sar comes in and calms everything down and the defenders trust him a bit more. "Onana has come in and he's a fantastic goalkeeper but he certainly didn't fill us with confidence last season. "Donnarumma is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and it would be crazy if Man United don't go for him.' The goalkeeping issue is expected to dominate the headlines ahead of United's visit to Fulham this weekend, with The Sun exclusively told that the club is looking at bringing David de Gea back to the club. The Red Devils have been tipped off that the Spaniard, 34, has a clause in his deal at Fiorentina – allowing him to leave for a relatively small sum.
