WNBA players and the league are far apart on new CBA talks ahead of in-person discussions

NBC Sports15-07-2025
NEW YORK — The WNBA players union and league officials have much to discuss when they sit down for their first in-person talks as a group since December about the new collective bargaining agreement.
After sharing initial proposals, the two sides apparently are far apart in the early negotiations as they prepare for their first face-to-face meeting that includes the players executive council in Indianapolis heading into All-Star weekend.
'We got a proposal from the league, which was honestly a slap in the face,' Phoenix Mercury forward and union rep Satou Sabally said.
Increased salaries, revenue sharing and roster size are three areas where the union expect to see major changes from the current CBA that will expire at the end of this season after the players decided to opt out last year. Nearly all the players who aren't on rookie scale contracts right now will be free agents after this season and looking for big salary increases.
Union president Nneka Ogwumike, who now has been a part of three CBA negotiations, is optimistic that the meeting could be beneficial for both sides since it's in-person. The two sides have had meetings over the last few months, but this will be the first time that all the players on the executive council will be there.
Ogwumike said 'when you're doing things via documents, when you're doing things via proxy, whether it's ... our union staff and league staff,' it's different. But 'when you're sitting at the table, things a lot of times, in my experience, you get done a little bit more efficiently.'
The WNBA is experiencing unprecedented growth across nearly every business metric from attendance and viewership. There's also the new $2.2 billion media rights deal that will start next season and the league plans to expand to 18 teams by 2030 with each of the three new teams paying $250 million expansion fee.
'It's interesting that there's a $250 million expansion fee, and there's no openness to have that be reflected in revenue share that goes to the players, especially as we're experiencing growth,' Ogwumike said. 'It doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but we're hoping we can get some clarity on that in Indiana.'
Ogwumike said the players had submitted a proposal back in February the league finally responded. She was surprised it took so long for the league to respond with its proposal, saying that it seemed that the league misunderstood the union's initial offer.
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said at the draft in April that the union's initial proposal wasn't comprehensive, but that she also is optimistic that a deal would get done.
'We'll get something done and it'll be transformational,' she said. 'These things take time.'
The key thing for the commissioner is that the new CBA protects the sustainability of the league going forward.
'We want to have a fair deal for all, but it has to be within the confines of a sustainable economic model that goes on for 10 years,' she said. 'We've had a few years of great growth … but we need to continue to make sure that we can fund the things that the players are asking for, that we want for them, too.'
If a deal isn't done by the end of October, some players, including Napheesa Collier and Angel Reese, have mentioned the potential of a walkout.
'From the players' perspective, it's hard to be able to navigate this during the middle of the season, but also we know how important it is and really getting it done before the end of October and we're making that effort to be able to do both,' union vice president Breanna Stewart said. 'The fact that it's been a little bit slow to start is tough, but hopeful things will ramp up now after getting their proposal back. We have a big meeting in Indy at All-Star and it's going to be spicy.'

Georgia football 2025 offensive line preview

The Georgia Bulldogs have rebuilt their offensive line ahead of the 2025 college football season. Four of Georgia's five starting offensive linemen left for the 2025 NFL draft. UGA will be without last season's starting center Jared Wilson, guard Tate Ratledge, guard Dylan Fairchild and tackle Xavier Truss. Despite all the NFL talent, Georgia's offensive line disappointed last season. The Dawgs ran for an average of 124.4 yards per game (second-to-last in the SEC) in 2024. According to Pick Six Previews, Georgia generated the No. 65 run push in the country last year, which is middle of the pack. Georgia has to be more effective rushing the football this fall. In 2024, Georgia allowed 25 sacks (No. 57 (tied) in the nation), which was a considerable drop off after allowing just 13 sacks (No. 8 (tied) in the nation) in 2023. This season sets up to be a bit a more advantageous for the offensive line. Georgia opens the season with Marshall and Austin Peay, so the reloaded unit will have time to gel before playing on the road against Tennessee on Sept. 13. Georgia's schedule is a little bit easier than it was in 2024. UGA plays only three road games, which is very helpful for offensive linemen. Georgia's projected starting offensive line Georgia returns four offensive linemen with at least 20 games of experience. The Bulldogs are hoping to have a bounce back year from redshirt junior offensive tackle Earnest Greene, who battled injuries throughout in 2024. Greene has appeared in 24 games in his Georgia career including 23 starts. Greene is expected to primarily play right tackle after spending most of his career at left tackle. He is UGA's most experienced returning lineman and earned preseason All-SEC honors (third-team). Georgia redshirt junior center Drew Bobo, who is the son of Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, returns and has 20 career appearances for the Bulldogs including two starts. He is projected to start at center. Junior offensive tackle Monroe Freeling is expected to hold down another starting spot for Georgia. Freeling has appeared in 22 career games at UGA including a handful of starts. He struggled at times in 2024, but has the talent and size to excel in a starting role. Freeling missed the spring after having a shoulder surgery. Georgia's last returning offensive lineman with significant experience is senior offensive guard Micah Morris. Morris has played in 33 career games at Georgia including four starts. Morris has previously served as Georgia's fullback in short yardage situations. Morris is projected to start at guard and is a mauler in the run game. UGA also returns redshirt freshman Daniel Calhoun, redshirt sophomore Bo Hughley, redshirt sophomore Jamal Meriweather, redshirt freshman Michael Uini, redshirt freshman Nyier Daniels and sophomore Jahzare Jackson. We project Calhoun, who missed a chunk of time this spring due to a foot injury, to start at offensive guard. Uini and Meriweather are expected to be Calhoun's top competition at right guard. We'll see how the offensive line competition unfolds in fall camp. Redshirt freshman Marques Easley was arrested in the offseason and transferred to Purdue this spring. Jahzare Jackson was recently arrested in July and will likely be suspended at the very least. UCF Knights redshirt freshman offensive lineman Waltclaire Flynn, a former four-star recruit, transferred to Georgia this spring and helps replace Easley. Georgia's freshmen offensive linemen Georgia signed five offensive linemen in the class of 2025 including three-star guard Dontrell Glover, four-star guard/center Cortez Smith, five-star guard/tackle Juan Gaston, four-star tackle Dennis Uzochukwu and three-star guard Mason Short. Smith and Gaston are most likely to earn playing time as true freshmen. Offensive linemen typically don't play as freshmen at UGA, but Georgia lost a lot of contributors this offseason, so there are more paths to playing time for freshmen than usual. Tigers beat Diamondbacks 7-2, winning 4th straight after a 1-12 slump

Associated Press DETROIT (AP) — Kerry Carpenter hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs, Chris Paddack threw six solid innings in his Detroit debut and the Tigers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-2 on Wednesday. The AL Central-leading Tigers have won four straight games, coming off a 1-12 slump that spanned before and after the All-Star Game. Detroit may make moves before the trade deadline on Thursday to bolster its chances winning the franchise's first World Series since 1984. Arizona has lost five straight, matching its longest losing streak of the season. Paddack (4-10) gave up only one run on three hits with five strikeouts and no walks, two days after the right-hander was acquired in a trade from the Minnesota Twins. Ryne Nelson (6-3) allowed four runs — one earned — on six hits. Kyle Backhus followed and gave up three runs on four hits, retiring only two batters. Carpenter snapped a scoreless tie with a two-out triple in the third inning, scoring Colt Keith after his second single of the game. Jake Rogers hit a two-run home run in a three-run sixth inning, giving the Tigers a six-run cushion that was comfortable against the offensively challenged Diamondbacks. Arizona All-Star third baseman Eugenio Suarez, a potential trade target, was 1 for 4 at the plate. Suarez returned to the lineup after missing Tuesday's game because he was hit on the right hand by a pitch the previous night. Key moment Carpenter's two-run homer in the fifth inning gave Detroit a 4-1 lead. Key stat Paddack gave up only one run in his second straight start. Up next Arizona RHP Merrill Kelly (9-6, 3.22) is the team's probable pitcher Friday night on the road against the Athletics. Detroit plays at Philadelphia on Friday night with Tigers RHP Jack Flaherty (6-10, 4.51) and Phillies LHP Ranger Suárez (8-4, 2.59) expected to pitch. ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 2

Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman sits against Twins to rest previously injured quad

MINNEAPOLIS — Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman sat out Boston's game Wednesday against the Minnesota Twins to rest the right quadriceps he strained earlier this season. Red Sox manager Alex Cora characterized the move as a precaution, with the third baseman expected back in the lineup Friday against Houston. 'I told him, in the morning, let me know how you feel,' Cora said. 'He feels good with the quad, but a bit tired.' Abraham Toro started in Bregman's place Wednesday at Minnesota. With Boston off on Thursday, the move gives Bregman two days of rest. Bregman strained the quad and missed seven weeks earlier in the season. The three-time All-Star is batting a career-best .298 with a .551 slugging percentage, .922 OPS, 44 RBI and 14 home runs in 64 games.
