Well-connected Westminster Christian advances to state beach volleyball final
At every opportunity, Westminster Christian's beach volleyball players yelled 'together' or 'connected.'
Those have been the buzzwords that have helped carry the Warriors (18-0) within one win of their first official state championship as well as an undefeated record.
On Friday morning in Tallahassee, the Warriors defeated Episcopal School of Jacksonville, 5-0, in a Class 1A state semifinal.
Westminster Christian, the No. 1 team in the state, will play third-ranked Tampa Berkeley Prep (21-0) for the title on Saturday at 8 a.m.
Warriors coach Sylvia Guso – a former volleyball standout at the University of Miami – said it was hard to find fault with any of her players regarding their performance on Friday.
'We played great,' Guso said. 'We've been working on a lot of things in practice such as defense and attacking, and our girls really executed.'
Westminster Christian's first four pairings all won in straight sets. In order, one through four, that's: Zoey Matias and Gigi Artiles; Alex Washington and Lia Gonzalez; Alyana Cadavid and Cassie Thomas; and Coco Garcia and Dani Arroyo).
At No. 5, Westminster's Frenchie Pazmino and Lauren Palczynski won in three sets: 21-7, 17-21, 15-8.
'The whole idea is that we're playing for something bigger than just ourselves,' Guso said, 'and that's where the words 'together' and 'connected' come from.'
THIS AND THAT
▪ The Palmetto Panthers, who won a state title in flag football last year, lost on Friday night, 7-0, to Alonso in a Class 4A state semifinal in Tampa.
Palmetto (16-4) allowed a touchdown on the opening drive by Alonso (19-2). After that, however, Palmetto's defense came up with four interceptions – two by Bianca Pacheco-Perez and one each by Francesca Lara and Canai Moore.
'Our defense played lights out,' Palmetto coach Kevin Mujica said. 'But we struggled to make plays on offense, and we took a lot of sacks.'
▪ St. Thomas Aquinas lost to Jupiter 3-0 in the Class 3A beach volleyball state semifinals on Friday night in Tallahassee. Jupiter (15-1) is ranked fourth in the state. Aquinas, ranked 13th, ended its season with a 19-5 record.
▪ In boys' basketball, Miami High's five starters and two top reserves have earned college scholarships. The list includes: Romari Robinson (Sacramento State); Aaron Richard (Chipola); Joseph Jean (Eastern Wyoming); Absalon Cortes (Holy Trinity); Joseph Murillo, Miguel Charles and Eddy Bonilla (Florida Memorial).

Steph Curry Posts Exciting New Video Amid Offseason
Steph Curry Posts Exciting New Video Amid Offseason originally appeared on Athlon Sports. By all accounts, Stephen Curry had a disappointing 2024-25 season with the Golden State Warriors. He seemed to be starting to show some signs of wear and tear during the first half of the season, but once six-time All-Star forward Jimmy Butler came to town in a big February trade, he and the entire organization seemed revitalized. Advertisement Unfortunately, Curry injured his hamstring in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals versus the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Warriors, who were considered by many to be legitimate championship contenders, were put to sleep in five games without the future Hall of Famer. But Curry did have some fun during the season. During All-Star weekend, which was held in the Bay Area, he spent some time with YouTube influencer MrBeast, and he even participated in a 3-point shooting contest with $100,000 for charity at stake. Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry with YouTuber Mr. Curry, Instagram MrBeast has over 400 million subscribers on YouTube, which is more than anyone else, and he also has more than 100 million followers on TikTok. In addition to posting some wild challenges on social media, he has become a huge philanthropist who has raised millions of dollars for various worthy causes. For the 10th time in his career, he led the NBA in 3-point makes per game with 4.4. Advertisement One would think the Warriors should be definite title contenders next season when they will have a full training camp with Butler. But they do need an upgrade at the center position and perhaps a little more depth. Warriors Could Avoid Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade After Major Question Raised
Warriors Could Avoid Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade After Major Question Raised originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Golden State Warriors have an important offseason ahead of them as they try to build around their aging trio of Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green to compete for a championship next season. Advertisement Of course, the Warriors ended the regular season on fire as they climbed to seventh in the Western Conference and then advanced past the No. 2 seed Houston Rockets in the first round. Golden State was then eliminated in the second round by the Minnesota Timberwolves after they were unable to overcome a hamstring injury suffered by Curry in Game 1. Golden State Warriors stars Jimmy Butler and Steph CurryTroy Taormina-Imagn Images Now the Warriors enter the offseason with some key decisions to make regarding how they want to build around their aging trio to make the roster into a title contender. One route they could go is potentially trading for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo as they have been linked to the two-time MVP winner. Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo reacts during the first Penner-Imagn Images Despite this, a recent question was brought up about how adding Giannis could impact the future of the franchise. Advertisement 'What it would take to have Giannis, Steph, Jimmy, and Draymond all on the Warriors, you're talking about a carcass. Those four and 12 Pat Spencers,' Mark Willard said on The Crossover. 'And you'd have no assets for years to come. What if you get Giannis, I guarantee a title next year, however after that you have 12 years of no playoffs. Do you make the trade?' This is an interesting question to ask and also a good one as the Warriors would give up their entire future to potentially land Giannis for a chance at a championship. Of course, a roster headlined by Giannis, Curry, Butler and Green would be a title contender next season but with three of the four players in the final years of their careers and Giannis not likely to stick around after they retire, it would be a major risk for the franchise's future.
