Mattias Ekholm injury update: Edmonton Oilers eye Western Conference Final berth as their key defenseman nears potential return
The
Edmonton Oilers
are just one win away from punching their ticket to the Western Conference Final, and there's even more reason for fans to be optimistic. Head coach Kris Knoblauch revealed a significant injury update regarding key defenseman
Mattias Ekholm
, who has missed nearly the entire postseason. If Edmonton wraps up their series against the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 5, they could be welcoming Ekholm back into the lineup in the next round.
Oilers look to capitalize on momentum with potential reinforcement ahead
With a commanding 3-1 series lead over Vegas, the Oilers are poised to close things out on the road in Game 5. A win not only secures their spot in the next round but also provides the team with valuable rest days. This could be crucial in aiding Ekholm's recovery.
'Mattias has been on the ice for light skates,' Knoblauch said. 'He will not be joining us this series. We're hopeful that he can join us next series if we can get to that.'
Ekholm has been sidelined with an undisclosed injury, having played only once since March 26. Despite his absence, the Oilers have managed to maintain strong defensive play, but the return of a veteran blueliner with postseason experience could provide a major lift.
A rested roster and the return of Ekholm could be a game-changer
Knoblauch emphasized the importance of closing out the series quickly—not just to stop Vegas from gaining momentum, but to allow the team to recover physically.
'Obviously there's a lot of benefits of winning that next game,' Knoblauch explained. 'You don't give that opportunity for Vegas to put together a string of wins, and then also the ability just to have some downtime, guys can rest and not add on.'
He added, 'You know, the bumps and bruises through the playoff season as it goes, guys get banged up and it's a physical game, as we've talked about. But I think right now that's an extra benefit.'

Ekholm contributed nine goals and 24 assists during the regular season, anchoring the blue line with his two-way play. His return could be the X-factor the Oilers need as they chase a return to the Stanley Cup Final.

'Natural leader' Siraj is getting recognition: Morne Morkel
Mohammed Siraj (Getty Images) in London: Team India's bowling coach Morne Morkel praised Mohammed Siraj for his consistent performances in the five-match Test series against England. Siraj featured in all five games and has emerged as India's leading wicket-taker in the series with 20 scalps to his name. Defending a target of 374 in the final Test, Siraj bowled with intensity and discipline, putting England's batters under pressure. Though he has taken two wickets so far in the innings, his impact has been significant. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! He has bowled 26 overs so far in this innings — the highest among Indian bowlers. Akash Deep has bowled 20 overs, while Prasidh Krishna has delivered 22 overs. 'Akash didn't get it right today, but hopefully he produces a magic spell. I'm happy Siraj is getting recognition — he's a natural leader,' Morkel said during the post-day press conference. Poll Do you think India can level the series at 2-2? Yes, they will No, England will win It's too close to call England reached 339/6 at stumps on Day 4 after rain and bad light brought an early end to proceedings at The Oval. They need just 35 more runs to clinch a 3-1 series win. Jamie Smith (2*) and Jamie Overton (0*) are the unbeaten batters at the crease. India, meanwhile, require four wickets — potentially just three if Chris Woakes is unable to bat due to his shoulder injury — to level the series 2-2. Greenstone Lobo predicts result of India vs England fifth Test | What's in the stars? Woakes, who was seen with his arm in a sling on Sunday, might only bat one-handed if he's needed and will likely come in at No. 11. 'The series had moments like that — ups and downs. We managed to break the partnership. Unfortunately, the rain came in, and we'll come back tomorrow. You can't afford to throw in the towel. The key was to break that partnership and create a bit of pressure,' Morkel said. 'It's pretty wet out there. The ground staff has been incredible with the breaks and all… it's out of our control. Hopefully, the boys get the ball in the right areas,' he said. For real-time updates, scores, and highlights, follow our live coverage of the India vs England Test match here. IND vs ENG 5th Test: Dropped and punished: How many runs did Harry Brook score after Mohammed Siraj's miss?
Siraj dropped Harry Brook when he was on 19 runs (Images via Getty Images) In a pivotal moment on Day 4 of the fifth and final Test, India pacer Prasidh Krishna was left red-faced after a misjudgment by his teammate, Mohammed Siraj , cost India crucial runs. During the 35th over of England's chase, Harry Brook top-edged a pull shot off Prasidh and the ball sailed high into the air. Siraj, stationed at long leg, took the catch cleanly, prompting an immediate celebration from Prasidh. However, Prasidh had overlooked one crucial detail: while completing the catch, Siraj had stepped back and touched the boundary cushions with his foot. That meant the ball had gone for six, not a wicket. The celebratory moment quickly turned to disappointment as Prasidh realized what had transpired. Brook, aware of the situation, calmly returned to the crease as Prasidh and Siraj exchanged frustrated glances. IND vs ENG: Josh Tongue on England's 374-run chase, Akash Deep's batting and The Oval pitch The error not only denied India a key breakthrough but also handed Brook six extra runs. He was on 19 at the time and continued to bat aggressively, eventually reaching a match-shaping 111 off just 98 balls. His knock, laced with 14 fours and two sixes, tilted the balance heavily in England's favour. Ironically, Brook was eventually dismissed by Akash Deep, caught by none other than Siraj himself. The wicket came when Brook tried to step out and slap a slightly short ball through the off-side, only to slice it in the air. His bat flew into the leg side, while the ball landed safely in Siraj's hands at mid-off. Brook departed to a standing ovation, having left India reeling under scoreboard pressure. Poll Was Siraj's misjudgment the turning point in the match? Yes, it cost India crucial runs No, other factors influenced the outcome Ultimately, the dropped catch meant that Siraj costed his side 92 crucial runs that followed, and Brook's eventual dismissal all formed part of a defining phase in the Test one that could ultimately decide the series outcome.
