Body of missing Assam woman, civil services aspirant, found in Rishikesh
Haridwar: Days after a female civil services aspirant from Assam's Dima Hasao district went missing at Shivpuri in
Rishikesh
, the body of the 25-year-old was found in the Ganga river in the city's Phoolchatti area on Tuesday morning.
Police said a preliminary probe suggests she might have taken her own life as she was upset over her career.
SSP (Tehri Garhwal) Ayush Agarwal said, "The body of the missing woman, Rosmita Hojoi, was recovered from the Ganga by an SDRF team. We did not find any external injury marks on her. The postmortem report is awaited. Prima facie, she took her own life. We found her Whatsapp chat details mentioning her career disappointments, and it seems she was unhappy about her performances.
No suicide note was found, and further investigation is on.
"
The woman, who had travelled to Delhi for the Railway Recruitment Board exam, arrived in Rishikesh on June 6, with her friend Hemant Sharma and another man from the national capital. They stayed at a local hotel. Her friends reported that she went missing that night, and her parents filed a missing person's report the next day.
SHO of Muni ki Reti, Pankaj Chauhan, said Sharma and the other man were elsewhere and unaware of her whereabouts, and subsequently alerted the authorities after a local resident purportedly witnessed the drowning incident in Shivpuri area, prompting the police to initiate a search operation in the river.

The body was cremated in the presence of her family in Rishikesh on Tuesday evening, police added.

The incident took place in the Jajuar police station area as the girls were returning home from school. The deceased, 15-year-old Kiran Jha, daughter of Rupesh Jha, and her 14-year-old friend Mehzabi Bano, daughter of Mohammad Haider Ali, had stopped at a shop to buy samosas when the police vehicle crashed into the shop and struck them near the Government High School in Jajuar. Kiran succumbed to her injuries on the way to the hospital while Mehzabi remains in critical condition. State renews pledge to end child labour
Patna: On the occasion of World Day Against Child Labour, symbolic cheques for Rs 25,000 were distributed among children rescued from child labour as financial support from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. The programme, organised by the department of labour resources, was aimed at raising awareness and reaffirm the state's commitment to ending child exploitation. Deepak Anand, secretary of the department, said around 30 children had been rescued so far in the 2025-26 financial year. In the previous years, 1,319 children were rescued in 2023-24 and 1,148 in 2024-25. He added that the department recovers Rs 20,000 from offending employers and deposits the amount into the Child Labour Rehabilitation-cum-Welfare Fund. The state govt contributes an additional Rs 5,000 per rescued child to strengthen the rehabilitation process. Each child also receives Rs 25,000 from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund to secure their future. "World Day Against Child Labour reminds us that there should be no place for child labour in a civilised society. It is a social crime and curbing it is every citizen's moral duty. We must work together to provide education, health and a dignified life to such children," Anand said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo He added that strike forces have been formed to rescue children and raise awareness across the state. He said children are a nation's most valuable asset and their well-being reflects the social and economic development of society. "The roots of child labour lie in poverty, illiteracy and social inequality, which perpetuate a generational cycle of exploitation and deprivation," he said. He reminded the gathering that, under Indian law, employing children under 14 or adolescents aged 14-18 in hazardous workplaces can result in a fine between Rs 20,000 and Rs 50,000, imprisonment from six months to two years, or both. Repeat offenders face rigorous imprisonment of up to three years. Labour enforcement officers and superintendents were honoured during the programme for their work. The secretary commended their collaboration, which he said had contributed significantly to eliminating child labour. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Bengaluru: Truck owner imprisoned for letting unlicensed man drive
Bengaluru: In a rare but significant verdict, a city court has not only punished a truck driver for causing a fatal accident but also held the vehicle owner criminally liable for allowing an unlicensed man behind the wheel. The tragedy took place on July 17, 2023, when truck driver J Puttaswamy, 58, a resident of Byadarahalli on Magadi Road, mowed down a scooterist on the Kadugodi Railway bridge. Poornima S Hegde — a freelance professional and mother of a young daughter — suffered fatal injuries. Puttaswamy fled the scene, abandoning the truck. Thanks to swift action by Whitefield traffic police and the testimony of a witness who was riding just behind Poornima, the truck driver was identified and arrested. Subsequently, the court sentenced Puttaswamy to one year and nine months of simple imprisonment, along with a fine of Rs 15,500. But the case didn't end there. In a pointed move that shifts part of the blame to systemic negligence, the court also found truck owner KV Ramesh guilty of handing over the vehicle to Puttaswamy despite knowing that the driver's licence had expired. "This conviction sends a strong message to all vehicle owners," a senior police officer remarked. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo "Allowing someone to drive without a valid licence isn't just irresponsible, it can be criminal." The court sentenced Ramesh, a resident of Vijayanagar, to three months of simple imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000. Investigators said the case was bolstered by clear witness testimony and forensic evidence. "The deposition made by the eyewitness helped in securing the conviction. He identified the driver in court during the trial, explained how rash driving by Puttaswamy resulted in the fatal accident, and how Puttaswamy, without lending a helping hand to the injured woman, ran away from the place," police said. Besides witness statements, bloodstains found on the truck matched those of the victim. "We collected bloodstains from the wheel and front portion of the truck. The same was tested at the forensic science laboratory (FSL), and reports confirmed that the bloodstains were of the victim. This matching of bloodstains also played a crucial role in securing the conviction," an investigating officer said. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
