My baby girl was killed in a giraffe attack that left me paralysed as I shielded kids from beast – it still haunts me

The Sun3 days ago
AS nearly one ton of giraffe came hurtling towards Nicole Panos and her two young children, she knew it would be impossible to outrun the raging beast.
Just like the giraffe protecting her calf, Nicole's maternal instinct kicked in, as she shielded one-year-old Kaia in her arms and screamed at four-year-old Kayden to run - but tragically, only two of them would escape with their lives.

Nicole was just 25 when she was left paralysed from the waist down while trying to save toddler Kaia and Kayden from a giraffe after it charged at them in the Kuleni Game Park, where they lived, in South Africa, back in October 2023.
Kayden suffered skull fractures but managed to escape with his life after curling up in a ball in the sand to escape the giraffe – who the family believe was protecting a calf.
Tragically, one-year-old Kaia, who Nicole was holding in her arms, died after suffering a traumatic head injury.
The heartbroken mum told The Sun that the terrifying events that unfolded still haunt her every day, and fighting back tears, she said: "My world completely shattered the day Kaia died."
"On one level, I feel betrayed by our safe space and confused; we didn't behave in a threatening manner to the giraffe.
'But as a mother, I understand the instinct that kicks in to protect your children.
'My last thought before she charged at us was that of worry, 'Where is her baby?', but she took mine from me."
'She came straight at us'
Nicole and her husband, Jason, lived with their children on-site at the family business -a luxury game park, popular with families who travel from across the world to stay in lodges.
She worked in the family nature training business as a marine facilitator, a student mentor and was an aspiring birth doula, and lived a short walk away from her family, who also lived on-site.
Nicole was due to meet a student in the afternoon and had arranged for the children to stay with their grandparents for a few hours.
She said: "It was just one of those lazy mornings, we all played together and then they napped at lunchtime. I lay with the children.
'We left our house to walk the short distance to my parents' home. We walked through the bush thicket and then across a sandy clearing, where the children used to love to play.
'I saw a male and female giraffe in the distance; I knew she had recently had a calf, but I couldn't see it with her.
'She watched us, but she's quite curious, so it wasn't out of character, and we weren't close to them. I saw her turn away and walk in the opposite direction. I remember thinking it was weird that the calf wasn't there.
'I was carrying Kaia in my arms, and Kayden was walking ahead of me.
'Suddenly, I heard this noise behind us and I turned around – and I saw her coming at us."
Nicole describes the horrifying moment the giraffe charged the family, knowing it would be impossible to outrun the angry beast.
She said: 'Her head was down, she was coming straight at us, running really fast.
'I have always been taught to stand your ground with any animal charging at you to try to dominate the situation.
'But she was charging at my children; they couldn't defend themselves. I had Kaia in my arms, and she couldn't run away. My instinct to protect my children took over, and I screamed at Kayden to run.
'I felt a thump on my back and I blacked out. I don't remember being kicked by her.
'I had Kaia in my arms. I woke up and heard Kayden screaming, I was trying to keep my body on top of Kaia to keep her safe.

'The giraffe was moving towards Kayden."
The mum watched helplessly as the giraffe made its way towards her four-year-old son, who had curled himself up in the sand to protect himself.
She added: "His body looked so small – I desperately wanted to get to him but I couldn't move.
"The giraffe moved back to me and I blacked out. When I woke up my mum was sitting next to me and holding Kaia.
"I saw Kaia's chest move up and down, I heard Kayden screaming, I remember thinking: 'They're both alive' and I passed out again."
'Survival mode'
Nicole later learned that her brother had heard her screams for help and had fired a gun into the sand to scare the giraffe off.
Paramedics and family rushed both children for urgent medical care, but Nicole's spinal injuries meant she would have to wait four hours before a helicopter could airlift her to hospital.
Nicole's cousin went to the hospital with Kayden, and her father rushed to meet Kaia and her aunt at the local doctor, where she tragically took her last breath, while her grandfather held her in his arms.
The mum-of-two said that her loved ones struggled to break the soul-destroying news to her that Kaia had passed.
Nicole said: "I kept asking for news about the children, and everyone kept telling me that Kayden was alright.
'I was flown to the hospital in Durban, and my parents drove to meet me there.
'I asked them, 'What about Kaia?' and they said they would tell me as soon as they knew anything when I was out of surgery, but I just knew in that moment that she was gone.
'I asked them to tell me the truth, and we all broke down.
'From that point, I have been in survival mode, and I probably will be for the rest of my life."
Telling Kayden was almost as devastating as the moment I found out. It has hit him so hard. The two of them were so close
Nicole Panos
Not only have Nicole and Jason struggled to come to terms with Kaia's death, but her older brother was hit hard by the tragic events.
Nicole says: "Telling Kayden was almost as devastating as the moment I found out. It has hit him so hard. The two of them were so close.
'They never squabbled; they adored each other. Kaia would copy everything that Kayden did, and he would go and greet her every morning with this huge hug.
'We encourage him to talk about her all the time. We all talk about her a lot.
"We remember the dance parties we would have in the kitchen and the delight she took feeding the guinea fowl – which she called cluck clucks – with her grandad.'
Nicole spent 23 days in hospital, including 16 days in intensive care, and faced months of rehab.

As well as being left paralysed, she suffered multiple fractured ribs and damage to her internal organs.
Her husband, Jason, was working in the US at the time of the accident. The family had hoped that by Jason working abroad for a six-month period, they would have enough finances to be able to both spend more time with their family.
Nicole says: 'We felt as though we were on the edge of something wonderful about to happen to our family. Nothing could have been further from the truth.
'We have decided to rename the forest in the park Kaia's forest. It didn't feel right to give her a tombstone; we wanted a memorial to her that is living.
'She should be remembered as she was in life.
'Even though she was only on this earth for 15 months, she brightened so many people's lives, and we believe that what she brought to this world needs to be seen and celebrated.'
The family are now trying to rebuild their lives – and making plans to ensure Kaia is not forgotten.
Nicole added: 'She was the most wonderful, funny, beautiful soul, who loved everything and everyone. She loved life.
'She felt, and still feels, like sunshine. She radiated happiness.
'I am overwhelmed that I was afforded the privilege of being her mother, and I take comfort from knowing that I got to share every single day of her short time on this planet.
'I am trying to live the way Kaia did, full of love, but it is hard some days.
'I have understanding, but I don't know if I will ever be able to make peace with what happened.'

Mali's military rulers arrest 2 generals, a suspected French agent and others in alleged coup plot

Mali's military rulers said Thursday they have arrested a group of military personnel and civilians, including two Malian generals and a suspected French agent, accused of attempting to destabilize the country. The announcement followed rumors in recent days of arrests of Malian army officers and was made by Mali's security minister, Gen. Daoud Aly Mohammedine on the evening news on the local media. He assured the audience that a full investigation was underway and that 'the situation is completely under control.' It comes amid an ongoing crackdown on dissent by Mali's military following the country's pro-democracy rally in May, the first since soldiers seized power nearly four years ago. The military provided few details about the alleged coup plotters, what it entailed and the French national implicated in it, beyond identifying the man as Yann Vezilier. The security minister said the Frenchman acted 'on behalf of the French intelligence service, which mobilized political leaders, civil society actors, and military personnel' in Mali. There was no immediate word from France, Mali's former colonial ruler, on the man's arrest. 'The transitional government informs the national public of the arrest of a small group of marginal elements of the Malian armed and security forces for criminal offenses aimed at destabilizing the institutions of the Republic,' Mohammedine said. 'The conspiracy has been foiled with the arrests of those involved," he said, adding that the plot began on Aug. 1. The national television broadcast photos of 11 people it said were members of the group that planned the coup. The minister also identified the two Malian generals he said were part of the plot. One, Gen. Abass Dembélé, is a former governor of the central Mopti region who was abruptly dismissed in May, when he demanded an investigation into allegations that the Malian army killed civilians in the village of Diafarabé. The other, Gen. Néma Sagara, was lauded for her role in fighting militants in 2012. Mali, along with neighboring Burkina Faso and Niger, has long battled an insurgency by armed militants, including some allied with al-Qaida and the Islamic State group. Following two military coups, the ruling junta expelled French troops and instead turned to Russia for security assistance. But the security situation remains precarious, and attacks from extremist groups linked with al-Qaida intensified in recent months. In June, military leader Gen. Assimi Goita, was granted an additional five years in power, despite the junta's earlier promises of a return to civilian rule by March 2024. The move followed the military's dissolution of political parties in May.

Driver, 17, sang Shaggy's ‘It wasn't me' after mowing down care home worker who lost unborn baby in horror hit-&-run

A HIT-and-run driver, 17, sang Shaggy's "It wasn't me" after running over a pregnant care home worker. Renju Joseph, 31, tragically lost her unborn child after she was mowed down on a pedestrian crossing in Lancashire on September 29 last year. 2 2 Ashir Shahid, now 20, was barreling through Bamber Bridge village, near Preston, in his Toyota Prius at speeds of up to 71mph in the 30mph zone. He struck the five-months pregnant care home worker and she was "thrown into the air", Preston Crown Court heard. Renju has been walking with colleagues on her way to work when the tragedy unfolded at around 7.50pm. Paramedics rushed her to hospital with head and spinal injuries. Prosecutor Emma Keogh told the court: "It also became apparent that the life of her unborn child was in severe jeopardy. "An emergency C-section had to be carried out in an attempt to save the unborn child's life. "The placenta had ruptured and Mrs Joseph had bled quite heavily. "Her child was born that evening but sadly he only survived for a few hours before passing away. "This was her very first pregnancy with her husband who she married about five years earlier. This was a planned pregnancy and very much wanted." Renju spent several weeks in intensive care and had to relearn how to walk after a three month hospital stay. The court heard another motorist had witnessed the Prius driver accelerating around 15 metres before the crossing. They then swerved before hitting the 31-year-old and narrowly missing fellow pedestrians. The witness claimed Renju was "thrown into the air for quite some distance". Ms Keogh told the court: "It was very clear from footage in both the lead-up and the aftermath that the Toyota was driven at speed. "It was clear that throughout the journey the driving by Ashir Shahid left a lot to be desired." Video evidence from a front seat passenger in Shahid's car revealed the pair had been joking around before the crash while driving at high speed. The passenger was also seen dangling his feet out of the window while the driver periodically let go of the steering wheel. Investigations then revealed the defendant had searched "charge for hit and run human" just 11 seconds after the horror. He and another man were also seen at Frankie's Chicken Shop, laughing about the crash. One of them was overheard saying: "I'm basically with a murderer." After spotting CCTV he told a staff member behind the counter: "If anyone asks for this video, don't give it them. This guy is a criminal." While the men were still in the chicken shop, a flat bed truck picked up the Prius after it was abandoned in a nearby village. Police later discovered it had been transported to Greater Manchester. One of the men checked his phone in the hours after the incident and said: "That's the woman. She's in hospital." Meanwhile a clip from Shahid's snapchat showed him singing along to the Shaggy song It Wasn't Me and laughing. Officers detained Shahid at a property in Kirkham after he hid at a friends house until October 2. Shahid, of Windsor Road, Walton le Dale, Preston, pleaded guilty to causing the death of Renju's baby Olive by dangerous driving. He also admitted causing serious injury to Renju by dangerous driving. Shahid will be sentenced on Friday alongside a 17-year-old male who pleaded guilty to assisting an offender.

Girl, four, who died in pool at Waterworld is named as inquest into her death opens

A four-year-old girl who died in hospital following an incident at a swimming pool in Waterworld has been named for the first time. Vethavalli Vasu-Dharma was found in a critical condition after an unspecified incident at the attraction in Festival Park, Staffordshire on August 4. Paramedics arrived three minutes after receiving several 999 calls from desperate onlookers to find staff and visitors performing CPR. They took over resuscitation efforts and rushed the schoolgirl to hospital where she later died. An inquest has now been opened into her death. An East Midlands Ambulance spokesperson said: 'Crews arrived to find Waterworld staff and bystanders performing CPR on a girl who was in a critical condition. 'The ambulance team quickly took over resuscitation efforts to commence advanced life support before conveying the girl by land ambulance to Royal Stoke University Hospital whilst life-saving treatment continued en-route. 'Tragically, despite the best efforts of everyone, nothing could be done to save the little girl, and she was confirmed deceased in hospital a short time later. Our thoughts are with the family and friends at this truly awful time.' Detective Chief Inspector Lucy Maskew from Staffordshire Police said: 'Our thoughts are with the family at this terribly sad time. 'We are now making enquiries and looking to establish the circumstances of the incident. 'We would ask that members of the public avoid speculating in these early stages of the investigation and allow the family to grieve.' A Waterworld spokesperson said: 'Waterworld is deeply saddened to confirm that a fatal incident occurred at 4:15pm on Monday, August 4th, in the Lagoon area of the Aqua Park. 'A four-year-old girl was found unconscious and treated on Poolside by our Lifeguard & Management teams on site. 'They immediately provided CPR and called the emergency services, who arrived around 4:20pm. 'All other visitors were asked to quietly leave the pool out of respect for the rescue operation underway, and we would like to thank them for their support and collaboration. 'It is with great sadness that we learned of this young girl's passing later this evening. All our thoughts are with her family and loved ones during these extremely difficult times. 'The authorities were immediately alerted and Waterworld is working closely and openly with them to precisely understand the circumstances of this tragic accident. 'Waterworld is in shock and has decided to remain closed tomorrow out of respect for the young girl's family.'
