Italian former racing driver Riccardo Patrese has accused current Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen of 'whinging' over the claims that he has faced 'passport bias' by the British press. Verstappen, who has been constantly at odds with British drivers, had made the sensational claim of biased reporting by the press in 2024.
The 27-year-old Verstappen competed against Briton Lewis Hamilton for the Formula 1 title in 2021 and faced a tough challenge from Bristol-born Lando Norris of McLaren last year.

'Sometimes in racing situations, or battles, or certain penalties, and the way people look at success and how much credit they give you or not, I definitely feel that there is a bias,' Verstappen, who was born in Belgium but presents Netherlands, had said after winning the Brazilian Grand Prix last year.
'The problem in F1 is that 80 to 85 per cent of the media is British. And I did feel that some things which were written about me were not fair. I am not going to sit here and single out one broadcaster, but I just had to laugh about what was said. I was like: 'Whatever.''
'Verstappen is not crticised because of his passport'
Former Williams and Benetton driver Patrese, who won six races in F1, doesn't agree with Verstappen's claims. He added that champions like Verstappen often have a habit of complaining.
'I don't agree with him,' he told Listofsweepstakescasinos.com. '[He is not criticised] because of his passport. If [James Hunt was] Dutch, I don't think he gave any trouble during his career. I think the fact [is] that he's special and opens the right doors at the right moment, and he could use all the opportunities he could have.
'Sometimes with these rules, he doesn't agree, but I don't think it's because he's Dutch instead of English. Champions usually like whinging a little bit. I know very well it's because I had Nigel [Mansell] in the team that he was winging all the time.'
Verstappen, however, has enjoyed the support of his former colleagues. Former Red Bull aerodynamics guru, Adrian Newey, has claimed that the media doesn't fully understand the four-time champion and has tried to demonise him.

'I think from the outside, I'm not sure people fully appreciate and understand Max, just like they didn't with Sebastian [Vettel],' Newey told the High Performance podcast. 'First of all, there's this sort of demonisation both of them suffered at times, which I think is very unfair, and maybe that's also a little bit of the British media, if I'm honest.
'Sky have a huge influence around the world, their viewing is truly international, but their coverage is quite nationalistic, dare I say, and that can have an influence. It's this thing that now with journalism, typically, there is that trend to sort of either put people on a pedestal or knock them down.'

Visa queries jump as Wimbledon, F1 power global sports tourism: Atlys
Sports events like Wimbledon and Formula 1 are driving a sharp rise in international visa searches as fans build entire travel plans around global sporting fixtures Major sports events like Wimbledon 2025 and the ongoing Formula 1 season are sparking a surge in visa-related enquiries, a new report has shown. Wimbledon 2025, scheduled in London from June 30 to July 13, has led to a 28 per cent rise in UK visa application queries, according to Atlys, a visa processing platform. The tournament has evolved into more than just a tennis championship. 'Fans are extending their trips, combining matches with leisure and sightseeing, and turning Wimbledon into the centrepiece of broader summer travel plans,' stated Atlys in a release. Since the season kicked off in March, visa search activity around key host nations has risen on the platform by 18–30 per cent. 'Countries like Italy, Monaco, Japan and the UK have seen elevated query volumes, aligning with the mid-season stretch of marquee races,' the release added. 'We're witnessing a global shift where major sporting events aren't just being watched, they're being chased across borders,' said Mohak Nahta, founder and chief executive officer, Atlys. 'Fans are planning entire international trips around these experiences, turning events like Wimbledon and Formula 1 into powerful travel magnets. From what we see in visa search trends, sports have become one of the most influential forces shaping global mobility. It's not just about attending a match or a race anymore; it's about being part of something bigger, something unforgettable,' Nahta added. This is not the first time this has happened. During the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year, held in Dubai, there was a notable spike in sports-related travel. Overall bookings to Dubai rose by nearly 45 per cent during the series in which India defeated New Zealand. 'This reinforces the growing influence of cricket in shaping regional mobility trends,' the report added.

Ronaldo's Saudi club Al Nassr without a coach as Pioli leaves
Cristiano Ronaldo's Saudi Arabian club, Al Nassr, is without a head coach after Stefano Pioli departed on Wednesday. The Italian is expected to return home and take charge of Fiorentina. Al Nassr, which is owned by the Saudi Public Investment Fund, now finds itself without a manager just days before Ronaldo's contract expires on Monday. The 40-year-old forward has been with the club for 2½ years. In a statement posted on social media, the club announced: 'Pioli and his staff are no longer the acting coaching staff of the first team.' Pioli previously coached Fiorentina for two seasons until 2019 and went on to win a Serie A title during his five-year tenure at AC Milan. After being let go by Milan following the 2023–24 season, he joined Al Nassr, replacing Luís Castro, who was dismissed earlier in the year. Al Nassr is aiming for its first domestic league title since 2019 and has parted ways with three full-time coaches since Ronaldo's arrival. The team has qualified for next season's AFC Champions League after finishing third in the Saudi Pro League. That position was confirmed following a successful legal appeal that saw the club awarded a win in a match against a team found to have fielded an ineligible player. Ronaldo recently helped Portugal win the UEFA Nations League title, delivering standout performances throughout the tournament.
