Saifuddin: MACC free to probe KDN officers anytime

The Sun13-05-2025

PUTRAJAYA: Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has voiced his full support for the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in carrying out its duties following the arrest of two Home Ministry (KDN) officers in an anti-graft operation, dubbed Op Outlander, recently.
Saifuddin even said he would refrain from further comment, stressing his trust in the integrity of the investigation process.
'MACC has '25 hours a day' to go in and investigate. Let them do their job according to their responsibilities,' he told a press conference after the KDN monthly assembly here today.
Saifuddin reiterated that this stance has been a consistent principle of his since the beginning of his tenure.
On May 8, MACC confirmed the arrest of two KDN officers and one civilian in an operation conducted in Putrajaya. The arrests were linked to an investigation into alleged corruption involving the fast-tracking of citizenship status confirmation (PTW) applications.
On another development, Saifuddin emphasised that legal action against individuals facing criminal charges, including foreigners, will be carried out in accordance with Malaysian law.
Referring to former Goldman Sachs partner Tim Leissner from the United States, Saifuddin noted that legal proceedings have already begun under the Financial Monetary Act, and an Interpol Red Notice has been issued.
'If there is an allegation against someone, we act in accordance with the rule of law. We are a sovereign nation. Since he (Leissner) is a foreign national, we will use the appropriate legal channels like we always did,' he said.
On May 7, The Wall Street Journal reported that Malaysia had filed an extradition request for Leissner in connection with his role in the 1MDB scandal.
The Malaysian Government submitted the request to the United States Department of Justice in August 2024.
Interpol placed Leissner on its Red Notice list last November, effectively alerting member countries to detain him if located.

Let law run its course, says Ean Yong after Teoh's sister calls him out

Ean Yong Hian Wah said he shares the family's pain but will not respond to Facebook posts calling him out over his silence. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Former Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah has called for the legal process to take its course in the Teoh Beng Hock case, after being criticised by his late political aide's sister. Ean Yong said he shared the Teoh family's grief over the past 16 years and pledged to cooperate fully with police if any new evidence emerges. 'Through all the sadness, I urge that the law be allowed to run its course,' Oriental Daily quoted him as saying. 'I will not comment on the Facebook postings made by Teoh Lee Lan.' Lee Lan had taken to Facebook to express frustration that Ean Yong had yet to break his silence or take a clear stance, more than three weeks after the Attorney-General's Chambers classified the case as requiring no further action (NFA). She accused Ean Yong of avoiding responsibility, questioning why he did not ensure her brother had legal representation during his Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) interrogation or inform the family earlier about his detention. Teoh, a political aide to Ean Yong, died on July 16, 2009 on the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam, after being questioned for hours at the Selangor MACC headquarters. An inquest into his death was held, and the coroner returned an open verdict. However, the Court of Appeal ruled in 2014 that Teoh's death was caused by 'one or more persons unknown', including MACC officers. In 2019, police launched an investigation under Section 342 of the Penal Code for wrongful confinement. Before 2018, two special investigation teams were set up – one in 2011 and the other in 2015 – to look into Teoh's death, but both cases were classified as NFA by the public prosecutor.

[UPDATED] MACC records Tan Sri's statement over highway sukuk funds misappropriation

KUALA LUMPUR: Graft busters have recorded a statement from the Tan Sri at the centre of investigations into the alleged misappropriation of sukuk funds for the construction of a highway. Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said two MACC officers took the statement at the Tan Sri's residence here. Azam said that the entire process took place between 9am and 3pm today, and was expected to resume tomorrow due to the Tan Sri's health condition. "To date, MACC has recorded statements from 51 individuals, including the Tan Sri and his family." According to a source, a raid was also conducted at the Tan Sri's residence at Melaka, but no seizures or confiscations were made. It was reported on June 7 that the Tan Sri had been admitted to hospital for medical treatment. MACC had previously obtained confirmation from his doctor before proceeding with questioning. MACC has so far seized RM143 million in connection with the alleged fund misuse. It was reported earlier that MACC investigators are tracking the Tan Sri's luxury vehicles and properties in Malaysia and abroad, including assets in London and Switzerland. The probe also covers the true value of the luxury alcoholic beverages reportedly in his possession. A notice of asset declaration has been served to the Tan Sri and other related parties. To date, seizures include 14 personal bank accounts totalling RM4.5 million; eight company accounts worth RM33 million; a luxury condominium and a plot of land valued at RM24.5 million; nine vehicles worth RM7.65 million; luxury watches worth RM25 million; designer handbags worth RM3 million; jewellery and diamonds worth RM6 million; four horses worth RM400,000; alcoholic beverages worth RM3 million; overseas assets valued at over RM15 million; and gambling-related activities estimated at RM20 million.
