Let law run its course, says Ean Yong after Teoh's sister calls him out

PETALING JAYA : Former Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah has called for the legal process to take its course in the Teoh Beng Hock case, after being criticised by his late political aide's sister.
Ean Yong said he shared the Teoh family's grief over the past 16 years and pledged to cooperate fully with police if any new evidence emerges.
'Through all the sadness, I urge that the law be allowed to run its course,' Oriental Daily quoted him as saying.
'I will not comment on the Facebook postings made by Teoh Lee Lan.'
Lee Lan had taken to Facebook to express frustration that Ean Yong had yet to break his silence or take a clear stance, more than three weeks after the Attorney-General's Chambers classified the case as requiring no further action (NFA).
She accused Ean Yong of avoiding responsibility, questioning why he did not ensure her brother had legal representation during his Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) interrogation or inform the family earlier about his detention.
Teoh, a political aide to Ean Yong, died on July 16, 2009 on the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam, after being questioned for hours at the Selangor MACC headquarters.
An inquest into his death was held, and the coroner returned an open verdict.
However, the Court of Appeal ruled in 2014 that Teoh's death was caused by 'one or more persons unknown', including MACC officers.
In 2019, police launched an investigation under Section 342 of the Penal Code for wrongful confinement.
Before 2018, two special investigation teams were set up – one in 2011 and the other in 2015 – to look into Teoh's death, but both cases were classified as NFA by the public prosecutor.

KUALA LUMPUR : The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has urged for improved safety measures at construction sites following the discovery of a British traveller's body at a site in Bangsar recently. NIOSH chairman Chong Chieng Jen said the incident raised questions about how the public could access the area and called for a review of existing safety protocols. 'Construction sites are inherently high-risk and should not, under any circumstances, be accessible to the public,' he said in a statement today. On June 5, police confirmed that the body found the previous day at a construction site in Bangsar was that of the missing 25-year-old British national, last seen on May 27. Chong said Section 15 of the Occupational Safety and Health (Amendment) Act (OSHA) 2022 spells out the duty of employers to ensure the safety, health and welfare of employees at the workplace, while Section 17 emphasises the responsibility to safeguard others present at the site. 'Employers and self-employed individuals are also required, as far as reasonably practicable, to ensure that their operations do not pose safety or health risks to non-employees. 'They must also provide information on any hazards that could affect the safety or health of individuals present at the worksite,' the statement said. Chong reminded developers, contractors and all relevant parties to comply with the Act or risk being fined up to RM500,000, jailed for up to two years, or both. He said that preventive steps, such as effective perimeter fencing, adequate security surveillance, systematic access control, and clear warning signage, must be standard at all construction sites. 'Risk management at construction sites should not only focus on protecting workers, but also on ensuring the safety of the public, especially in densely populated urban areas frequented by tourists,' he said. In addition, NIOSH wants the occupational safety and health department and the Construction Industry Development Board to conduct an immediate and comprehensive investigation to identify any breach of standard operating procedures (SOPs) or provisions under OSHA. Chong added that NIOSH is ready to cooperate with authorities and the industry to promote a stronger safety culture through training, awareness programmes and a better understanding of the OSHA (Amendment) 2022.

Govt spent RM486,000 on Dr M's Japan trip, says Anwar

(Facebook pic) MELAKA : The government covered nearly half a million ringgit in expenses for former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's trip to Japan to attend the annual Nikkei conference last month, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar said the government allocated approximately RM486,000 for the visit after receiving a formal application from Mahathir. He explained that there were provisions which allowed former prime ministers to apply for government support for official travel. The government will grant the application if it is approved by the sitting prime minister. 'He applied, and I approved. I believe the delegation comprised around seven people,' Anwar told reporters here. 'I have people asking me why we (the government) paid for him. He is entitled to apply… and I decided to approve RM486,000 for him to go to Japan. 'I just don't want anyone to misunderstand (this) or have a negative perception. Despite his daily criticisms of the government, we still approved his (travel) application.' Anwar was speaking to reporters after an empowerment seminar and a closed-door meeting with PKR leaders. On May 30, Mahathir was reported to have attended and delivered a speech at the annual Nikkei Future of Asia conference, an event he had regularly attended over the years. In a Facebook post on May 31, the 99-year-old reflected on his long participation in the forum, which he said he had attended almost every year since its inception 30 years ago.

Bus driver in fatal UPSI crash arrested

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The driver of the chartered bus that crashed in Gerik on Monday killing 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students, has been arrested. Perak police chief Noor Hisam Nordin said the 39-year-old man was detained at about 6pm after being discharged from Taiping Hospital, where he was treated for injuries sustained in the crash. The suspect will be brought to the Gerik district police headquarters (IPD) to assist in the investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which pertains to causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. 'We have received instructions from the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC). (He) will be charged in the Gerik (magistrates') court tomorrow,' Nor Hisam said in a Bernama report. The bus was chartered by UPSI students who had celebrated Hari Raya Aidiladha in Jerteh, Terengganu, over the weekend, and were travelling back to their campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak. It overturned at Km53 of the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, Gerik, killing 15 students. The crash also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver, his assistant and four people in an MPV involved in the collision. On Tuesday, Sinar Harian reported that Bukit Aman traffic investigation and enforcement department director Yusri Hassan Basri had revealed that the bus driver had 18 outstanding summonses. He said 13 summonses were for speeding, three for not wearing a seatbelt, one for not having a third brake light, and another for involvement in a previous accident. Transport minister Loke Siew Fook reportedly said that based on dashcam footage from another road user, it was clear that the bus was 'speeding and overtaking' before it lost control and overturned.
