Beng Hock's family rejects MACC apology, calls it insincere

Teoh Lee Lan (third from left) and members of the Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement hold up pictures of MACC officers they believes were involved in her brother's death. KUALA LUMPUR : The family of the late Teoh Beng Hock has rejected the apology issued by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, describing it as insincere and impenitent. Beng Hock's sister, Lee Lan, said the apology by MACC chief Azam Baki was merely a public relations exercise, with no genuine accountability or follow-up action. 'They are only apologising because they see us suffering. There is no sincerity in this apology,' Lee Lan said at a press conference here today. 'No action has been taken against the MACC officers who are suspected to be involved. We want justice and the truth. We want to know what really happened at MACC that day.' She also said her family is not seeking compensation but justice, adding that an earlier proposal by the Attorney-General's Chambers to offer additional compensation, following the return of the Pakatan Harapan government in 2022, was also turned down. 'What we demand is the truth and justice. The perpetrators must be charged and punished in accordance with the law. We don't want money,' she said. Earlier, Azam said MACC offered to give a goodwill contribution to Beng Hock's family as a 'gesture of compassion'. At the press conference, Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement chairman Ng Yap Hwa said no could put a price tag on someone's life. He also sarcastically suggested for Azam to 'surrender' the five MACC officers who the association believed were involved in Beng Hock's death.

Teoh Beng Hock's family rejects MACC apology, says no justice without action on five officers

KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 — The family of the late Teoh Beng Hock has reportedly rejected an apology from Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki over Beng Hock's death 16 years ago. According to The Star, Teoh's younger sister, Teoh Lee Lan, 45, said the apology lacked sincerity as no MACC officer had been held accountable for her brother's death. 'They said they are apologising because they see our pain, but they are not surrendering the five officers we believe were involved,' she was quoted as saying at a press conference here last night. 'Their offer of a financial contribution is also shameful — we do not want money, we want the truth,' she reportedly added. According to the report, Lee Lan further criticised Azam's remarks, saying they implied that a human life could be compensated with money. Yesterday, Azam apologised to the family of Teoh Beng Hock, who died in 2009 at the building housing the commission's Selangor office. He said the MACC acknowledged the findings of past investigations, including a recent police probe that resulted in no further action, and expressed sympathy for the family's long-standing pain. Azam also said the MACC was prepared to offer a goodwill contribution for the welfare and education of Teoh's child.

Teoh Beng Hock group seeks to raise RM50,000 for UN advocacy trip

PETALING JAYA : The Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement (TBH-ADA) is seeking to raise RM50,000 to fund Teoh Lee Lan's advocacy trip to Geneva, where she plans to meet United Nations officials to press for greater accountability over her brother's death. TBH-ADA president Ng Yap Hwa said a formal complaint was filed yesterday with three top officials at the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). The complaint was lodged with Morris Tidball-Binz, UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions; Alice Jill Edwards, UN special rapporteur on torture; and Ganna Yudkivska, president of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. 'This is not just about putting public pressure on the government, but it is to ensure the government fulfils its international obligations (as a UN member),' Ng told a press conference today. 'The government should not wait until the international community scrutinises this case for them to do their due diligence.' Lee Lan said it was disheartening that the family had to seek international intervention after years of unanswered questions from the government. TBH-ADA had been organising forums throughout the country to rally public pressure on Beng Hock's death probe, which was classified as requiring no further action (NFA) by the Attorney‑General's Chambers because of insufficient evidence. Beng Hock was found dead on July 16, 2009 after falling from the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam, Selangor, after being questioned for several hours by officers from the Selangor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission. An inquest into his death initially returned an open verdict. However, in 2014, the Court of Appeal ruled that his death was caused by 'one or more unknown persons', including MACC officers. Before 2018, two special investigation teams had been set up to look into the incident – one in 2011 and the other in 2015 – but both cases were classified as NFA by the public prosecutor. In 2019, police launched an investigation under Section 342 of the Penal Code for wrongful confinement. A reinvestigation was ordered by the Kuala Lumpur High Court in November last year, directing the police to re-examine all aspects of the case.

Let law run its course, says Ean Yong after Teoh's sister calls him out

Ean Yong Hian Wah said he shares the family's pain but will not respond to Facebook posts calling him out over his silence. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Former Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah has called for the legal process to take its course in the Teoh Beng Hock case, after being criticised by his late political aide's sister. Ean Yong said he shared the Teoh family's grief over the past 16 years and pledged to cooperate fully with police if any new evidence emerges. 'Through all the sadness, I urge that the law be allowed to run its course,' Oriental Daily quoted him as saying. 'I will not comment on the Facebook postings made by Teoh Lee Lan.' Lee Lan had taken to Facebook to express frustration that Ean Yong had yet to break his silence or take a clear stance, more than three weeks after the Attorney-General's Chambers classified the case as requiring no further action (NFA). She accused Ean Yong of avoiding responsibility, questioning why he did not ensure her brother had legal representation during his Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) interrogation or inform the family earlier about his detention. Teoh, a political aide to Ean Yong, died on July 16, 2009 on the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam, after being questioned for hours at the Selangor MACC headquarters. An inquest into his death was held, and the coroner returned an open verdict. However, the Court of Appeal ruled in 2014 that Teoh's death was caused by 'one or more persons unknown', including MACC officers. In 2019, police launched an investigation under Section 342 of the Penal Code for wrongful confinement. Before 2018, two special investigation teams were set up – one in 2011 and the other in 2015 – to look into Teoh's death, but both cases were classified as NFA by the public prosecutor.

Teoh Beng Hock's sister urges Anwar to deliver justice

Teoh Beng Hock's sister, Teoh Lee Lan, during a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today. KUALA LUMPUR : Teoh Beng Hock's sister has urged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to fulfil his promise to deliver justice in the case of the political aide's death in 2009. At a press conference here today, Teoh Lee Lan said she was deeply disappointed that the police's latest probe into her brother's death has once again been classified as requiring no further action (NFA). 'On August 1, 2024, Anwar asked us to trust the 'new police force' and the 'new system' under his leadership. But what has this system given us? Only more disappointment,' she said during a press conference today with the family's lawyer, Ramkarpal Singh. Last November, the High Court instructed the police to complete their long-delayed investigation into Teoh's death. He was found dead on July 16, 2009 after falling from the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam after being questioned for several hours by officers from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). An inquest into his death initially returned an open verdict. However, in 2014, the Court of Appeal ruled that Teoh's death was caused by 'one or more unknown persons,' including MACC officers. In June 2018, during Pakatan Harapan's first term in government, the Cabinet agreed to reopen investigations into Beng Hock's death. Anwar also pledged that the case would be resolved within one to two years. Before the case was reopened in 2018, two special investigation teams had been formed — one in 2011 and another in 2015 — but both were classified as NFA. MORE TO COME
