Teoh Beng Hock's sister urges Anwar to deliver justice

Teoh Beng Hock's sister, Teoh Lee Lan, during a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
KUALA LUMPUR : Teoh Beng Hock's sister has urged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to fulfil his promise to deliver justice in the case of the political aide's death in 2009.
At a press conference here today, Teoh Lee Lan said she was deeply disappointed that the police's latest probe into her brother's death has once again been classified as requiring no further action (NFA).
'On August 1, 2024, Anwar asked us to trust the 'new police force' and the 'new system' under his leadership. But what has this system given us? Only more disappointment,' she said during a press conference today with the family's lawyer, Ramkarpal Singh.
Last November, the High Court instructed the police to complete their long-delayed investigation into Teoh's death.
He was found dead on July 16, 2009 after falling from the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam after being questioned for several hours by officers from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
An inquest into his death initially returned an open verdict. However, in 2014, the Court of Appeal ruled that Teoh's death was caused by 'one or more unknown persons,' including MACC officers.
In June 2018, during Pakatan Harapan's first term in government, the Cabinet agreed to reopen investigations into Beng Hock's death.
Anwar also pledged that the case would be resolved within one to two years.
Before the case was reopened in 2018, two special investigation teams had been formed — one in 2011 and another in 2015 — but both were classified as NFA.

Harimau Malaya's draw against Cape Verde boosts team confidence ahead of Vietnam clash, says Hannah Yeoh

SEREMBAN, May 31 — Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has described Harimau Malaya's 1-1 draw against Cape Verde in a Tier 1 international friendly on Thursday in Kuala Lumpur as a positive development for the national team. She said the result, achieved against a team ranked 72nd in the world, will help build the team's confidence ahead of their crucial 2027 Asian Cup qualifying match against Vietnam on June 10. 'I hope every match will provide new confidence for our players, especially as they prepare to face Vietnam,' she told reporters at the 14th National Junior Wushu Championship here last night. The event was graced by the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, and featured nearly 500 exponents from 17 teams nationwide. Malaysia will face Cape Verde again in a closed-door friendly at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday (June 3) as part of preparations for the qualifier. Hannah also urged fans to turn out in full force to support Harimau Malaya, stressing that the energy and chants from the Ultras can significantly lift the players' spirit. 'The cheers from fans really matter. The Ultras' songs and chants play a big role in motivating the team,' she said, citing the difference in atmosphere during a recent Manchester United-Asean All-Stars match without Ultras. She expressed hope the national squad can improve their ranking under the new head coach, with the support of government and corporate sponsorship. On the junior wushu championship, Hannah said her ministry has channelled RM165,000 through the Sports Matching Grant to support the five-day event. She said wushu has now been reclassified as a sport in schools to align with the ministry's long-term athlete development plan, especially in preparation for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games. — Bernama

Previously put on leave, Melaka teacher sentenced in Shariah court over attempt to commit illicit sex act with ‘Abang Wiring'

MELAKA, May 31 – A schoolteacher and a self-employed electrical technician dubbed 'Abang Wiring' were each fined RM5,000 or sentenced to six months' jail by the Shariah High Court here yesterday after pleading guilty to attempting to commit an act deemed immoral under Shariah law. Beritah Harian reported Judge Mohd Yunus Mohamad Zin handed down the sentence to Muhammad Hairul Ezuan Hamzah and Nur Fadilah Zainal, both 31, following an incident on February 28 at a residence in Taman Bukit Emas, Sungai Petai, Alor Gajah. 'The prosecution emphasises that there is no specific provision for unlawful intercourse between individuals not married to each other, so our approach is via Section 52 concerning attempts to commit illicit intercourse,' said Melaka Chief Shariah Prosecutor Atras Mohamad Zin. Atras said both individuals had entered their pleas voluntarily and understood the implications under Section 52 of the Shariah Offences Enactment (Melaka) 1991, while also noting the case's public attention as a factor in the prosecution's call for a deterrent sentence. Judge Mohd Yunus said the court considered the facts presented, the background of the accused, their plea for leniency, and the fact that this was their first offence, before imposing the sentence, which included an option of a fine or imprisonment. Both individuals, who were unrepresented in court, opted to pay the fine. The charge under Section 52 relates to attempts to engage in 'zina', or sexual relations with a person who is not one's lawful spouse under Shariah law. It carries a maximum fine of RM5,000, or up to 36 months in prison, or both. Authorities launched an investigation after receiving a tip-off on May 27 regarding a couple allegedly involved in conduct contravening Shariah guidelines, leading to a summons for questioning on May 29 by the Melaka Islamic Religious Department (Jaim). According to case facts, both individuals acknowledged engaging in the conduct on February 28, after which they were arrested and their statements recorded. The matter drew significant public interest after it was reported that the female teacher had been placed on administrative leave amid allegations involving a married man. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek later confirmed that the teacher remained in service as a civil servant while awaiting the outcome of the case.
